Statement of Problem

3
What are the effects of Water Pollution on residence in the Linstead area and how does it

affect the regular lives of the citizens?

4
Reason for selecting the area of research

The researcher choose this area of research because of various flooding that has been

reported whenever it rained heavily or for long periods. It will also look at some of the

complaints shared by residents in the community as well as providing them with

information about water pollution and to also discover a solution as to how they the

residence in and around the community can assist in alleviating the problem.

5
Method of investigation

A questionnaire was used in the collection of data for the survey. This method was chosen

because it allows for information to be collected from a large number of persons in a short

space of time and it promotes confidentiality. The questionnaire was used in investigating

the issues leading to water pollution in the Linstead area.

The researcher distributed a total of twenty-five (25) questionnaires to carry out this

investigation, 14% of the respondents were females and 11% were male. All the

respondents answered the questionnaire in full and gave the relevant information needed for

the survey. Procedures used to collect data

on the people within the Community. This area has many residents and a sample of 25%

was needed to carry out the investigation.

questionnaire. The residents were handed printed copies of the questionnaire which they

answered to the fullest, all of the answers where documented and used to complete the

report. The questionnaire was handed out and completed in one day.

ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

Water pollution occurs when harmful substances such chemicals or microorganism

contaminates a stream, river, lake, ocean, aquifer, or other body of water, degrading water

quality and rendering it toxic to humans or the environment.

Water is uniquely vulnerable to pollution. This is known as a universal solvent, water is

able to dissolve more substances than any other liquid on earth this is why water is so easily

polluted. Toxic substances from farms, towns, and factories readily dissolve into and mix

with it, causing water pollution.

Water pollution is caused mainly by the following:

 Agriculture

 Industrial Waste

 Domestic influent

 Sewage/waste water

 Oil Pollution

 Radioactive Substances

One of the factors of water pollution is accumulation of solid waste. This resulted in it

flowing into the rivers and drains which contribute to flooding.

In the analysis of the data it was seen that the main factor responsible for contributing to

water pollution is the unsanitary residents which was 50%. The residents being unsanitary

14
might have led to the circulation of disease-causing bacteria and viruses within the area and

this will cause pests and diseases to spread.

The analysis also showed that 73% of garbage was not collected according to a proper

schedule. In most cases whether the garbage is placed into plastic bags or garbage bins or

other containers they are left for long periods outside these residences, this allows for the

scattering of the garbage by animals searching for food, which would also result in it

washing into the drains and rivers whenever it rained.

In analyzing the data it showed that 40% of the residence is affected by water pollution year

round. This is a major issue which needs urgent attention from the residents and the

relevant authorities.

15
Statement of findings

The survey has revealed a number of deficiencies which might have led to water pollution

in the Linstead drains and river.

 40% of the residence said that garbage is dumped weekly, while the other 60% said

garbage is dumped daily. According to the survey that was done the garbage is

dumped into the river because it is not collected at all.

 Garbage is left on the ground and finds its way in the drains and river. Animals also

scavenging for food scatter garbage that adds up to the rising pollution of the area.

 In most cases the garbage collectors do not pick up scattered garbage, so it finds its

way into the drains and rivers.

16
RECOMMENDATIONS

The most important recommendations is in order to maintain a healthy environment in the

Linstead area, each resident, the garbage collectors and the government must play their role

to alleviate many of the problems caused by water pollution.

 The lack of garbage disposals and signs showing where they are located is a big

factor as to why people continue to pollute the area.

 The local government authorities should set up programs to educate the residents

about proper garbage disposal this should happen by organizing a community

meetings and by doing this residence will be educated on water pollution and the

consequences. Hence residence and authorities will both work together to deal with

this problem.

 People who are found polluting should be fined to push the discipline of not

polluting

17
IMPLEMENTATION STRATEGY

In order to help solve the problem the researcher could:

 Help to build signs showing the consequences of water pollution and it will also

indicate to them that it is illegal to dump garbage into the drains and rivers.

 Also print flyers to distribute to the residence, helping to educate them about proper

garbage disposal.

 Arrange a cleanup with the young people in the community where they would go

around and collect/cleanup the town.
