INTRODUCTION(1)
• Suriname is one of the vulnerable countries in the world to
the impact of flooding

• Flooding is exacerbated by poor drainage in the relatively

highly populated urban areas

• The largest part of Greater Paramaribo consists of a

network of canals that drain rainwater to the Saramacca
Canal

INTRODUCTION(2)
• Agriculture, shipping and dewatering are the three
functions of this canal

• Due to the expansion of residences in Paramaribo

and Wanica, this canal has now become more of a
dewatering canal

• At the beginning of the twentieth century sluices

were built at both ends of the canal

INTRODUCTION(3)

• The sluices cannot be operated during high tide and

spring tide

PROBLEM DEFINITION
• The sluice at Beekhuizen cannot be operated
when the water level in the Suriname River is
high, which means that a large part of
Paramaribo and Wanica becomes underwater
for an unacceptable long time during a normal
rainfall. This leads to disturbing and
unhygienic situations for the residents.

OBJECTIVE
The aim of this project is to dimension a
pumping installation, in such a way that
large parts of Paramaribo and Wanica do
not remain underwater at a standard rainfall
with a repetition time of 5 years.

TASKS
• A literature study is conducted to
become more familiar about the water in
the Saramacca Canal
• Research the amount of excess water in
the canal due to precipitation in the area
drained by the canal
• Determine the system characteristic
• Select the best fitting pump
