Even though we know very little about his early life, Shakespeare, unlike the University
wits, was never at the University. But when he wrote his first plays, he already started to
emerge as a prominent new playwright. He was a naturally gifted complete man of the
theatre. He wrote plays while working with his theatre company and often performing
with them.
Shakespeare wrote 37 plays over a period of 24 years. He also wrote at the beginning of
his career sonnets and longer poems.
In his early plays, the heroes are historical figures, mainly Kings of England, as he aimed
at tracing out the historical background of his nation’s glory.
His plays were written more for performance than for publication as books, and he and
his company became the stars of London, superseding the so-called University wits.
What is a man,
If his chief good and market of his time
Be but to sleep and feed? A beast, no more.
Shakespeare also had an important role in modernizing English language through his
drama.
The Winter's Tale 1611. Performed at the Globe May 1611; dance
of satyrs apparently borrows from a court entertainment of January
1611
The Tempest 1611. Performed at court in November 1611; uses
source material not available before autumn 1610
Henry VIII 1613. The first Globe theatre burnt down in a fire that
started during a performance of the play on 29 June 1613
The Two Noble Kinsmen 1613-14; 'our loss' in the Prologue
probably refers to the Globe fire of 1613
