- A simpler form of DALY, used by the GBD 2010 study (4), has been adopted. Age-weighting and time discounting are droppe
years lost due to disability (YLDs) are calculated from prevalence estimates rather than incidence estimates. YLDs are also ad
independent comorbidity;
- The standard life table used for calculation of years of life lost for a death at a given age is based on the projected frontier lif
for 2050, with a life expectancy at birth of 92 years (1);
- The years of life lost from mortality (YLLs) are calculated using recently revised WHO estimates of deaths by region, cause, a
years 2000-2012 (5). These make use of latest death registration data reported to WHO and incorporate assessments of level
for specific causes of death by WHO programs and interagency groups;
- YLD estimates draw on GBD 2010 analyses (3), with selected revisions to disability weights and prevalence estimates as note
Technical Paper (1).
Note that differences between these estimates and estimates previously published by WHO should not be interpreted as rep
time trends. Estimates for earlier years are not generally comparable due to changes in methods and data. In particular, the m
estimates published by WHO before 2013 incorporated age-weighting and time discounting.
This workbook includes point estimates for disability-adjusted life year (DALY) by cause, sex and age for Member States ba
range of data sources documented in the Technical paper s(1, 5). Depending on the available data sources for each Member S
cause-specific estimates will have quite substantial uncertainty ranges. Explicit uncertainty ranges are not included here, but
for selected causes as documented elsewhere (1, 3). Cell colours are used to summarize the levels of evidence available for th
(mortality) component of the DALY for each Member State. Caution should be used in comparing cause-specific DALY levels a
countries, particularly for causes and countries without country-specific national information. Note that levels of evidence wi
specific causes within and across countries, and the above colour coded scheme does not attempt to provide detailed inform
specific causes.
Nationally representative death registration data used directly
WHO program estimates based on country data and/or nationally representative sample death registratio
surveillance
WHO-CHERG multicause model category for under 5 deaths OR GBD 2010 analysis for countries with death
data (national or sample)
Draws on GBD 2010 (3) analyses for countries without nationally representative death registration data
The preparation of these statistics was undertaken by the WHO Department of Health Statistics and Information Systems in c
with WHO technical programs. Documentation and regional-level summary tables are available on the WHO website
