Discuss your understanding and reflection on the different schools of thought namely:
a. Structuralism
Structuralism is a mode of knowledge of nature and human life that is interested in
relationships rather than individual objects or, alternatively, where objects are defined by the set
of relationships of which they are part and not by the qualities possessed by them taken in
isolation. This is basic element of consciousness using a method known as introspection. With
this, I can say that structuralism is more on self-awareness. In structuralism, one is learning in his
own way by evaluating his experiences, point of views, feelings and emotion. The one
responsible in creating his own structure of personality is his own mind.

b. Gestalt
Gestalt theory emphasizes that the whole of anything is greater than its parts. My own
understanding about this school of thought is that it is focused more on the whole human mind
than its specific parts. When trying to make sense of the world around us, Gestalt psychology
suggests that we do not simply focus on every small component. Instead, our minds tend to
perceive objects as part of a greater whole and as elements of more complex systems. Let us try
to apply this in real life. In times that we are facing a problem, we feel sad because we try to
focus on the problem itself without knowing that the problem is just a part of the blessing that we
could get when we overcome this problem.

c. Psychoanalytic

It is the belief that all people possess unconscious thoughts, feelings, desires, and memories.
In this school of thought, Freud believed that the human mind was composed of three elements:
the id, ego, and superego. The id consists of primal urges. The ego is the component of
personality charged with dealing with reality. The superego is the part of the personality that
holds all of the ideals and values we internalize from our parents and culture. Base from the
report and the given examples, my view about this school of thought is it can be used in decision
making in different situation. Let us take this one as an example. I am trying to have a healthy
diet. I am avoiding drinking soft drinks and eating foods with high cholesterol but there are lot of
thoughts that comes to my mind. My id is urging me to drink soft drinks and eat fatty foods why
my ego keeps on reminding me not to because it can destroy my plan of having a diet. While the
id and is contrasting, the superego is the one responsible in deciding. As a result, I ended up
drinking a little bit of soft drinks and just a bite of food with high cholesterol. Thus, this school
of thought tells us the contribution of our own mind in making decisions in different situations of
our life.

3. Why do we say culture is a very important aspect needed for the education of our learners?

According to google, culture refers to the cumulative deposit of knowledge, experience,

beliefs, values, attitudes, meanings, hierarchies, religion, notions of time, roles, spatial relations,
concepts of the universe, and material objects and possessions acquired by a group of people in
the course of generations through individual and group striving. Simply it is the way of life/living
of different groups of individuals around the world. With this, we can simply say that culture vary
from place to place. Why do we consider culture as a very important aspect needed for the
education of our learners? In my own understanding, culture is very important in education.
Culture is passed from generation to generation. It is like a treasure and children are considered as
heirs of this culture. Culture serves as our guide or basis in doing our activities and tasks in our
daily lives. Culture also helps us in dealing with different types of people that we meet. Even if
you don’t personally know the person, if you know the culture of the place where he/she came
from, you will have an immediate background of his/her personality. Through culture, we can
also easily adapt or adjust when we migrate from one place to another. In our case as a teacher,
we can also use culture as a basis in having a background of the personality of our learners. All of
these are just few of the many examples why culture is very important in education.
