The document discusses McDonald's use of a concentration growth strategy to maintain its dominant position in the fast food industry. It describes how McDonald's established a strong brand over the years but faces threats from competitors like Subway and Wendy's. The document states that McDonald's "plan to win" strategy helped it stay on top despite health concerns but that it now needs to change its menu and expand offerings to meet increased health concerns. Concentrated Growth is one of the 15 Grand Strategies in strategic
management that I chose to tackle on, together with the practice of it in the market by one of the most famous fast food chains around the world, McDonalds. A concentration strategy basically involves trying to compete successfully within a single industry and to become a dominant player in one. McDonald’s has been able to establish a strong brand over the years. Although they are one of the most experienced companies in the fast food industry, established and upcoming companies have been a threat to its market share, like Subway and Wendy’s to name a few. McDonalds “plan to win” strategy made it possible for them to stay atop despite of negative publicity over health concerns. In response, the company plans to make changes to its menu in order to reflect increases health concern. Together with that, they should also put more effort and include the following strategic actions in order to maintain their market share in the industry: (1) Enhance promotion and advertisement in order to overcome negative publicity, (2) Progressively expand its menu in order to accommodate increased customer needs and tastes, including health concerns, and; (3) Invest more on product development in order to come up with competitive products for different cultures. Using Strategic Management is a necessity in all industries in the global economy. In order for a company to overcome its challenges, it needs to create and follow clear-cut plans as well as aligning their products and services to rapidly changing needs and taste of the customers.
