1. SCOPE

1.1 This s p e c i f i c a t i o n covers t h e removal of v e g e t a t i o n , boulders of s i z e up t o 0,15 m , and s u r f a c e
o b s t r u c t i o n s , and t h e demolition and removal of s t r u c t u r e s (including t h e i r basements, i f any) not
d i r e c t l y a s s o c i a t e d w i t h o r i n c i d e n t a l t o a n y excavation.

completed.

3. MATERIALS
3.1 DISPOSAL. OF MATERIAL. M a t e r i a l obtained from c l e a r i n g and grubbing and from t h e demolition of
s t r u c t u r e s s h a l l be disposed of i n borrow p i t s o r o t h e r s u i t a b l e p l a c e s i n d i c a t e d by t h e Engineer and
s h a l l be covered with s o i l o r g r a v e l . Where no such place f o r t h e d i s p o s a l of m a t e r i a l i s i n d i c a t e d by
t h e Engineer, t h e C o n t r a c t o r s h a l l make h i s own arrangements f o r the p r o v i s i o n of a s u i t a b l e place.
The d i s p o s a l , o r burning i f s p e c i f i c a l l y p e r m i t t e d , of combustible m a t e r i a l on s i t e may be done only I
with t h e p r i o r w r i t t e n approval of the Engineer. Care s h a l l be taken t o observe t h e p r o v i s i o n s of t h e
Atmospheric P o l l u t i o n Prevention Act, 1965 (Act 4 5 of 1965), and any r e g u l a t i o n s published i n terms of
t h e Act.
A l l t r e e trunks and branches of g i r t h exceeding 0.5 m s h a l l he s t r i p p e d of secondary branches, sawn
i n t o t r a n s p o r t a b l e l e n g t h s and stacked a t designated s i t e s . Such timber s h a l l n o t be used by t h e
C o n t r a c t o r f o r a n y purpose, and s h a l l remain t h e property of the Employer.
Fencing wire s h a l l be n e a t l y wound i n t o r o l l s o r c o i l s and a l l such wire, t o g e t h e r with a l l f e n c e p o s t s

and o t h e r re-usable m a t e r l a l from s t r u c t u r e s , e t c . , s h a l l be stacked a t designated s i t e s .

4. PLANT
4.1 The C o n t r a c t o r s h a l l provide saws f o r c u t t i n g t r e e s and branches a s ordered, and p l a n t t h a t is s u i t a b l e
f o r grubbing r o o t s and f o r digging out and removing o t h e r o b s t r u c t i o n s on t h e S i t e .

5. CONSTRUCT I O N
5.1, AKFAS TO BE CLEARED AND GRUBBED. Both borrow a r e a s and t h e p o r t i o n s of t h e S i t e on which excavations
a r e t o be c a r r i e d out and embankments and s t r u c t u r e s c o n s t r u c t e d , s h a l l be c l e a r e d o r grubbed, o r both,
but t h e C o n t r a c t o r s h a l l not commence c l e a r i n g o r grubbing u n t i l t h e Engineer has d e s i g n a t e d , i n
w r i t i n g and i n d e t a i l , t h e exact a r e a s t o be c l e a r e d o r grtibbed and t h e t i m e a t which t h e work i s t o be
s t a r t e d . The Contractor s h a l l ensure t h a t t h e genera1 shape, p r o f i l e , and l e v e l s of t h e a r e a are not
m a t e r i a l l y a l t e r e d d u r i n g c l e a r i n g and grubbing o p e r a t i o n s . (See t h e requj rements f o r computation of
q u a n t i t i e s given i n Subclause 8.2 of SABS 1200 D o r SABS 1200 DA, as r e l e v a n t . )
I n o r d e r t o avoid r e c l e a r i n g o r t o c o n t r o l d u s t o r e r o s i o n t h e C o n t r a c t o r may have t o c l e a r and grub a t
t h e l a t e s t p r a c t i c a b l e s t a g e of c o n s t r u c t i o n .

5.2 CUTTING OF TREES


5.2.1 P r o t e c t i o n of Persons, Animals, and S t r u c t u r e s . The C o n t r a c t o r s h a l l t a k e t h e necessary p r e c a u t i o n s t o
prevent i n j u r y t o persons and animals and damage t o s t r u c t u r e s and o t h e r p r i v a t e and p u b l i c property.
Where necessary, trees s h a l l be cut i n s e c t i o n s from t h e top downwards.
5.2.2 Branches overhanging Boundaries. The branches of trees to be l e f t s t a n d i n g s h a l l be so trimmed a s not
t o encroach upon t h e space (of h e i g h t a t l e a s t 7 rn) v e r t i c a l l y above any carriageway, railway formation,
o r o t h e r designated- area.
5.2.3 P r e s e r v a t i o n of Trees
5.2.3.1 General. No t r e e s h a l l be cut down u n t i l t h e Engineer h a s given w r i t t e n a u t h o r i z a t i o n f o r such work t o
commence.
5.2.3.2 I n d i v i d u a l trees. I n d i v i d u a l trees i n d i c a t e d and marked by t h e Engineer a s trees t o be preserved s h a l l
be l e f t standing and uninjured. The amount s t a t e d i n t h e p r o j e c t s p e c i f i c a t i o n s h a l l be deducted from
monies due t o t h e C o n t r a c t o r as a p e n a l t y i n r e s p e c t of every such t r e e t h a t i s damaged o r removed
unnecessarily.
