RATIONALE:
According to the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), Among 79
countries that participate, Philippines scored the lowest in reading comprehension in year 2018.
It show that there is a lack of accommodating every students below 15 years old to teach them in
proper way. And also according to the research lack of reading materials may lead to a low
reading comprehension. Even if they can pronounce the text, they tend to not understand the
meaning of the text. However, Reading ability is develop through practice.

The purpose of reading comprehension is to develop skill, knowledge and experience.

Having an excellent reading comprehension is crucial, and also increase the enjoyment and
effectiveness , and also helps in academically and personal life.

Goal:
-To improve their ability in reading and understanding

OBJECTIVES:
What does the training want to achieve in relation to the problems and needs of the training
participants?
It is evident in the performance of children nowadays, ages ranging from 15 and below, that their
reading comprehension is becoming unsatisfactory. There are factors that affect their attention,
focus and behaviour towards reading. That is the main reason why we come up to this project or
activity. The peer reading/tutoring aims to attain the following:
• To help the children attain increased literacy skills. We believe that having peers to teach
and guide the children greatly affects their interest in reading especially when the children or
participants go along well with each other.
• To develop reasoning and thinking among the children. Communication invites thinking
to a child working with a partner (facilitator). Evidently, children who lack communication are
most likely to struggle thinking and reasoning because they have no one to talk to or no one is
guiding them to exhibit their analytical skills.
• To teach the children for free. Many children are being deprived of education because of
poverty. With this project and with the help of our resources, we can possibly share the basic
knowledge and skills that they need to learn without getting any of their funds. Provided that we
will provide the books and other reading/teaching aids.
• To make the children feel the comfort and guidance of a family. For cases that involves
broken family, unsupportive parents, or foster family, we can help them build up their emotional
and behavioural aspects by letting them express themselves and giving the guidance or
counselling so they may look at things in a different way that does not bring negativity to their
perception.

ACTIVITY DESIGN:
The Advantages of peer reading activities to students:
1. Increased Literacy Scores — Students who read and discuss story passages with their peers
recall more content and score higher on assessments
2. Developed Reasoning and Critical Thinking Skills — Students who work in pairs and groups
typically perform better on tests that involve reasoning and critical thinking
3. Improved Confidence and Interpersonal Skills — Many studies about peer teaching point to
students building confidence and communication abilities.
4. Increased Comfort and Openness -This helps create an environment in which students are
more comfortable to ask questions and work through challenging problems in an
environment free from class ridicule.
5. Versatility — you can run a range of peer teaching exercises based on different subjects and
objectives, possibly involving other grades and classes

The Disadvantages of peer reading to students:

1. Student Inexperience — although you can share teaching tips and guidelines with students,
they won’t become expert educators.
2. Student Hesitancy — pairing students together can backfire, as some may feel inferior being
taught by certain peers. On the other hand, some tutees won’t put effort into the exercise, as
they won’t be keen on it from the get-go.
3. Poor Applicability — many detractors of peer teaching say it is more effective in post-
secondary settings than elementary and high schools.
4. Lack of Confidentiality — in many types of peer teaching scenarios, other students can
clearly see who the tutor is and who the tutee is. This means there may be too much
transparency with regards to whose excelling and who’s struggling.
5. Parent Pushback — You may not be the only one who identifies the above-mentioned
problems. If parents learn about peer teaching from their kids, they may see it in a negative
light.

Strategies that may be used in Peer Reading activities

1. Provide Written Prompts
Despite explaining, modeling and practicing feedback, tutors may draw blanks when the time
comes.
This is typically due to nerves, especially for young students who haven’t tutored before.
2. Role play
Role playing proper practices will supplement your explanations, giving students clear examples
and reference points about what you expect from them.
3. Positive Feedback
This acts as encouragement. Sometimes called praise, it should be honest and natural. Ask
students to think of meaningful compliments they’ve received. Using them as inspiration, they
can write a list of positive feedback lines.
4. Corrective Feedback
This helps tutees revise their answers. When they make objective mistakes, tutors can explain
what went wrong and demonstrate how to reach proper solutions.
