ACTIVITY: THE CENTRAL LIMIT THEOREM

Material/s Needed: A fair die

Instructions: Two random variables will be studied. These are x, the number that is obtained when a
single die is rolled, and x́

1. Roll the die 40 times and record the rolled values in the table below

2. Average the results of 40 rolls. This is one observation of the random variable x́ . Record your
computation and answer for the average here:

x́= x́=3. 7

3. Roll again the die for another 40 times and obtain the value of x́ for this sample. Record your
computation and answer for the average here:

x́= x́=3.4

4. Collect all the x́ values (question 3) from each of your classmate and record in the table below.

5. Find the mean, variance, and standard deviation and record your answer in the bottom row of
question 10. Write your solution at the back.

6. Generate a histogram. Draw the histogram of question 4 below. Does it have the general shape
indicated by the Central Limit Theorem?

7. Complete the table below for the theoretical distribution of a single roll of the die. Show your
solution at the back. Use the formula from Chapter 2 in finding the mean, variance, and standard
deviation of a discrete random variable. Record your answer on the first row in question 10.

(xi ─ µ)2

8. Use the formulae below with the theoretical values for the population x that were found in question
7 to find the theoretical values for the sample mean x́ . Show your solution at the back. Record your
answer on the second row in question 10.

Mean ( x́ ) = μ x́ = μ; Var ( x́ ) = σ
x n √ n

9. Record the theoretical values for outcome of the roll of a single die (found in question 7), the
theoretical values for the mean of 40 rolls of die (found in question 8), and the observed values for
our sample means (found in question 5).

10. Comment on the closeness of the observed values to what the Central Limit Theorem predicted the
values should be.
