AP US History

The French and Indian War was momentous because it helped Americans gain a feeling

of nationalism which led to America later gaining its independence from the British Empire. In

the document "The Real First World War and the Making of America," Fred Anderson, the

author provides the reader with many valid statements regarding the Seven Year War. Fred

Anderson, believes the war had help lay a base and shape America. The French and Indian War

was critical because it had been a part in leading Colonial America to gain independence and

break away from Great Britain.

The winning of the Seven Years War was a great accomplishment. It had allowed for the

Colonies to expand West. In the document Anderson mentions Native Indians not being happy

with the outcome of the war, considering they had allied with the French. The native people

knew that they were doomed, because leading up to the the war Indians had been decreasing in

population. The aftermath of the war was not in the colonists favor, Great Britain had laid an

additional tax, “The Stamp Act” to cover the dept of the war. Also the “Quartering Act” was

another unfavored part the colonists disliked about Great Britain. All these acts led to the British

Colonies wanting to gain independence. The war itself was not the turning point, the treatment

following from the Parliament and King was the rising action. All events after were leading up to

the independence of America.

Anderson says, “the fate of the native peoples is a melancholy historical inevitability.”

Even though, they allied with the French, the British Empire was too strong for the war. After the

war colonist felt liberated and shared a feeling of togetherness that they used to their advantage.
By having the French and Indian war colonists had a basic understanding of how their war was

going to work going into the American Revolution, and this led to their success.
