What I Need to Know

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you
master the skills needed in evaluating algebraic expressions, and addition and
subtraction of polynomials. The scope of this module permits it to be used in
many different learning situations. The language used recognizes the diverse
vocabulary level of students. The lessons are arranged to follow the standard
sequence of the course. But the order in which you read them can be changed
to correspond with the textbook you are now using.

The module is divided into two lessons, namely:

 Lesson 1 – Regular and Irregular Polygons
 Lesson 2 - Determine Convex and Concave Polygon
 Lesson 3 - Determine the different kinds of Polygons with respect to its
measure of angles and number of sides.

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. Identify Polygons;
2. Determine a polygon as;
A. convex or concave polygon,
B. regular or irregular polygon, and;
C. the different kinds of polygons with respect to its measures of angles and
number of sides.
3. Appreciate Polygons in our daliy lives.

Lesson
Regular and Irregular
1 Polygons

This is a lesson on evaluating algebraic expressions. A clear

understanding of the concepts in this lesson will help you easily to identify
regular and irregular polygons.

What’s In
Polygon comes from Greek. Poly- means "many" and -gon means "angle".

Is it a Polygon?
Polygons are 2-dimensional shapes. They are made of straight lines, and the shape is "closed"
(all the lines connect up).

Polygon Not a Polygon Not a polygon

(Straight Lines) (Has a curve) ( Open, not closed )

Types of Polygons
Regular or Irregular
A regular polygon has all angles equal and all sides equal, otherwise it is irregular.

What’s More

A. Tell whether the given polygon is a regular polygon or an irregular polygon.

B. Draw two polygons and two not a polygon.

Lesson
Determine Convex Polygon
2 and Concave Polygon

In lesson 1, you have learned the different types of polygons. Now, you will learn about the
shape determining the convex and concave.

What’s In
Concave or Convex

A convex polygon has no angles pointing inwards. More precisely, no internal angle can be
more than 180°.

If any internal angle is greater than 180° then the polygon is concave. (Think: concave has a
"cave" in it)

240º
120º

Convex Concave

What’s More

Determine whether the given shape is a convex or concave.

What’s In
Names of Regular Polygons
Name Sides Shape Interior Angle

Triangle (or Trigon) 3 60°

Quadrilateral (or Tetragon) 4 90°

Pentagon 5 108°

Hexagon 6 120°

Heptagon (or Septagon) 7 128.571°

Octagon 8 135°

Nonagon (or Enneagon) 9 140°

Decagon 10 144°

Hendecagon (or Undecagon) 11 147.273°

Dodecagon 12 150°

Note: for polygons with 13 or more sides, it is OK (and easier) to write "13-gon", "14-gon" ...
"100-gon", etc

Here are some of the applications of polygons in a real world situation.

Quadrilaterals ( 4 sides )
A quad bike has 4 wheels

Pentagon ( 5 sides )

The “Pentagon” in Washington DC has 5 sides

Hexagon ( 6 sides)

Honeycomb has Hexagon

Octagon ( 8 sides )

An Octopus has 8 tentacles

What’s New
In finding the interior angle of a polygon given the sides of a polygon. We can simply use the
formula
Interior Angle = (n−2) × 180°
n

Example: The given sides of a regular polygon is 8. Find its interior angle.

n=8
Interior Angle = (n - 2) 180 (substitute the value of n which is 8 to the formula)
n
Interior Angle = (8 - 2) 180
8
Interior Angle = (6)180
8
Interior Angle = 1080
8
Interior Angle = 135º

Solution: The measure of the interior angle is 135º.

What’s More
A. Compute the angle of the given sides of a regular polygon.

Additional Activities

Solve the problem.

An employee of a certain company is paid Php 550 per day for an 8-hour shift. Each
extra hour is paid Php 80. To compute for the employee’s salary for the week with 6
extra hours, the employer uses the expression

𝟓𝟓𝟎𝐚 + 𝟖𝟎𝐛

Where a = the number of days worked in a week (5days)

b = the numbers of extra hours (6 hours)

How much is the employee’s salary for the week?
