1. What is three (3) point lighting?

Three point lighting has been the Hollywood standard for years. They have been
using it because it looks incredibly eye pleasing and it looks great on the subject within a
scene. Three point lighting has been the foundation of all light placements on a set. It’s a
language that helps us talk about where lights come from in our scene. Three point
lighting refers to the light placement on a film set in front of the subject and to the one
behind the two. In front are the key light and the fill light, and the one behind is the back
light.

2. Describe the following:

2.a. Key light
Main light in the scene and also the brightest and covers the face the most. This
can be a side light, front light, or a top light. The key light is commonly 45 degrees in
front of the subject. Also known as the rembrandt light.

2.b. Fill light

Usually on the other side of the key light and all this light does is just fill in the
shadows given by the key light. The fill light is in lower brightness than the key light.
The fill light can be the key light bounced back onto the subject.

2.c. Back light

The sole purpose is to separate the subject from the background. The backlight is
commonly 45 degrees behind the subject. Illuminating the shoulders in the back of the
head.

3. What is low key lighting and high key lighting?

If there is no fill light, this is called low key lighting because the overall lighting
hitting the subjects face is low. This is called high key lighting because overall the
subject’s face is very bright or maybe having just one backlight or maybe two backlights
in one fill light. maybe the key light is directly in front of the subject or overhead for the
top light. maybe the key light is in the backlight on the same side. Maybe the backlight is
to become a rim light to create an interesting shape on the subject’s face.
