Wireless Instructions for Windows XP

Note: Windows XP Machines are generally the most difficult to get on the network, as the software was written before the
wireless specifications were developed.

To ensure the smoothest access, we recommend that you:

• have Service Pack 2 (SP2) or later (Check for Service Pack 2 Video Tutorial)
• have the latest Windows updates
• have the latest drivers for wireless (See your computer manufacturer’s website)
• have a wireless card that is WPA compatible
• Install the the required hotfix linked below in Step 1

Note: For added security, every month, LSUS requires users to change their password. Windows XP does not offer support
for changing wireless passwords. As a result of this, in order to connect to LSUSWireless, which uses your User ID and
password, you must clear the registry. Downloading and running the file linked below will allow you to re-enter your User ID
and Password, which should allow you to connect to LSUSWireless.

Download EAP credential removal.

1. Required Update !!!

If your system is running Windows XP Service Pack 2 you must install Microsoft hotfix update KB885453. This update fixes
a problem most computers have when authenticating to a secure wireless network. To download the hotfix, click HERE

Next, go to the Start menu Click Start > Connect to > Show all connections
or Classic start menu Click Start > Settings > Network Connections

Then, right click Wireless Network Connection and select Properties. You should see at least two tabs: General and
Wireless Networks. If you don’t see the Wireless Networks tab, you need to enable the Wireless Zero Configuration
service.
To Enable Wireless Zero Configuration:

1. Open the Control Panel and then double-click

Administrative Tools --> Services.
2. Scroll down the services on the right and
double click on Wireless Zero Configuration.
3. Under Service Status click on Start.
4. Under Startup Type select Automatic.

2. Click the Wireless Networks tab. Check Use

Windows to configure my wireless network set-
tings and then click Add

vv
3. Type LSUSWireless under Network name
(SSID) and select WPA for Network Authen-
tication and TKIP for Data Encryption. If you
don’t see these options, either the drivers for
your wireless adapter need to be updated or it is
likely that your adapter doesn’t support WPA.

4. Click the Authentication tab and select

PEAP as the EAP type. Check Authenticate
as computer when computer information is
available.
5. Click Properties and check Enable Fast
Reconnect as depicted below. Under Select
Authentication Method select Secured
Password (EAP-MSCHAP v2) from the drop
down menu. Check to ensure that the Validate
server certificate box is unchecked.

6. Click Configure and make sure the box

below is unchecked.

7. Click OK in the last window and all of the re-

maining windows. You should see LSUSWire-
less in the right hand corner of your PC. Click
to enter your credentials.

Your user name is your email logon ID and

password. Your logon domain is lsus (not
case-sensitive).
Note: LSUS provides technical support in the
Campus-Wide Lab. However, due to liability is-
sues, the above software and driver updates must
be installed by the student. LSUS personnel can
assist with verbally walking the student through the
setting changes, but once again these changes
must be made by the student. We do have copies
of the hotfix available for use in the lab.
