Lesson 1: 2-D Shape Review Part 1

Purpose and Objectives


Grade Level One Subject Math Duration 60 minutes
Date Monday January 11, 2021
The focus of this lesson is for students to be familiar with some of the
Lesson Focus common 2-D shapes that will be studied throughout the unit – circles,
triangles, squares, and ovals.
From the Alberta Program of Studies for Math:
 GLO: Describe the characteristics of 3-D objects and 2-D shapes and
Learning Outcome(s) analyze the relationships among them.
 SLO: Sort 3-D objects and 2-D shapes, using one attribute, and explain
the sorting rule.
Students will review their previous knowledge of select 2-D shapes.
Learning Objectives Students will recall the properties of select 2-D shapes.
Students will discuss using math vocabulary.

Assessment Evidence
Formative assessment for this lesson will take place through teacher
Formative Assessment observation of student participation throughout the lesson. Observations
will be recorded through anecdotal notes at the end of the lesson.
Summative Assessment No summative assessment is directly linked to this lesson.

Timing Content/Description Differentiations
20 minutes Math Talk
 Teacher will review the purpose and
expectations of a math talk
 Teacher will display an image (WODB task –
shape 1) and give students time to think about
it and come up with an answer
 Once all (or most) students have signalled that
they have an answer, the teacher will start
calling on students to explain their answer
 Students will share their answers and the
teacher will explain that every student is
correct
4 minutes Movement Break
 Teacher will lead students through a short
game of Simon Says to get students moving
2 minutes Material Handout
 Teacher will hand out student shape booklets
and have them put their name on the front
7 minutes Circle Review
 Teacher will present the circle section of the
review chart and ask students what they know
 Teacher and students will discuss about circles
– their characteristics and examples
 Teacher will ask students for the chart
information to wrap-up (name, # of edges, # of
vertices, example)
 Students will complete the circle page in their
“Book of Shapes”
7 minutes Triangle Review
 Repeat the process used for previous shape
7 minutes Square Review
 Repeat the process used for previous shapes
7 minutes Oval Review
 Repeat the process used for previous shapes
6 minutes Closure and Clean-Up
 Teacher will ask for any questions
 Teacher will ask students to tidy their
workspace and prepare for recess
