B. Relate them to real life events during the Spanish occupation. (What do they represent?) At least 5
sentences

1. Simoun

Simoun represent the Philippine revolution that happened during Spanish colonization. Kasi in the novel
It looks like what happened during
Spanish colonization that Andres Bonifacio, a self-thought warehouse clerk, arranged a secret
revolutionary society, the Katipunan. And the Spaniards found its existence that’s why Bonifacio quickly
gave a call for armed rebellion. The Spanish at that point captured Rizal, who had advocated change yet
never condoned the revolution.
2. Basilio

Basilio represent the red tagging during the Spanish occupation. Basilio was accused in the involvement
of subversive posters na pinost ng mga estudyante sa school at may mga nakasulat na threats, and other
such grave writings. This act was blamed on Basilio that’s why he was arrested. But after a month in jail,
he was freed because he was not guilty, and they knew that Basilio was innocent. Like in Spanish
colonization where Rizal was published the novel of El Fili and make a propaganda movement in order to
destroy or subvert the system of the Spanish government, that’s why the novels are being ban.

3. Cabesang Tales

Cabesang Tales represent the event in Spanish colonization which is the Agrarian trouble because he is a
farmer that also experienced the injustice of the Spanish government in their own land that caused him
to become a rebel. During the Spanish colonization, Rizal’s family were dispossessed of their territories
in a claim with the Dominican Order during the agrarian conflict in Calamba. And his father Don
Francisco Mercado refused to pay the land rents because the hacienda management consistently raised
the expense of the rental. The story of Cabesang Tales in the novel of El Filibusterismo was originate
from real encounters of Rizal’s family and relatives. The administrator of the estate of the Order
requested for a yearly rental from Tales since the last has involved and acquires from the ministers’
property. Tales lost his patience when rental keeps on increasing every year accompanied by threats of
“dispossession”. At the end, he refuses to pay the rent, demands that he lawfully owns the land.
