Topic:

Teaching of science at secondary level

Science:
Science is about wonderful nature and natural phenomenon. It is the experimental
demonstration and observation of the knowledge. It covers all the major branches like
physics, chemistry and biology.

Nature of science:
1. Science is the dynamic and expanding body of knowledge
2. Science may be both process and product
3. Science has somehow limit
4. Science gives us comforts by inventions

Science at secondary level in Pakistan:

In Pakistan at secondary level science convert into three or four major subjects i.e. Physics,
Chemistry, Biology and Computer science. Ideally all these subjects have specialized
teachers for teaching these scientific subjects but, in Pakistan usually specialized teachers
are not available at secondary level or if they are available, they are not trained but the Elite
class schools are exceptional. Because the Elite class schools usually have well trained
specialized teachers for teaching the science subjects.

Contrast between trained and untrained teacher:

Trained teacher Untrained teacher
Trained teachers have very good Untrained teacher usually does not have
specialization in his subject from a very specialization in his subject he often has a
good institute general degree not a specialized degree
He has an excellent communication skill He does not have excellent communication
skills
He has an experience of teaching and he He usually does not have an experience of
knows how he can engage students into science teaching
different scientific activities
He knows how he can make interest in He does not how he can make interest in
students about science students about science, so the students feel
him and his subject boring

Case study in Faisalabad District level about teaching of science at secondary

level:
I visit the whole district briefly and know about the levels of schooling at secondary level
from different institutions and the people working in different schools, then I came to know
following results
1. Govt. vs Private schools
2. Urban vs Rural schools
3. Categories of schools in Faisalabad city
1- Govt. vs Private schools
Govt. schools Private schools
Now Govt. schools have very good check Private schools have almost 4 categories in
and balance and performing very well Faisalabad district and they are performing
according to their category
Govt. schools have same level of teachers Same case is here different categories have
and teaching criteria according the Punjab different criteria for teachers and teaching
Government
There is no fee for students at secondary Fee is varied in private schools its about
level in Govt. schools only Faroog-e-taleem from 800-35000 per month at secondary
fund is taken from students which is about level
20 rupees per month

2- Urban vs Rural schools

There is not any difference between management of Govt. schools at Urban and Rural level
because both run by PED (Punjab education department) but there is only difference of
students. At urban level urban students learn in govt. schools while in rural schools’ rural
students learn so their mentality is different.

Urban schools Rural schools

Urban schools have more funds and staff Rural schools usually do not have much
fund and staff
Urban schools are larger than the rural Schools are less in number and small in
schools because of the more population in area and there is also less schools for
urban areas females
3- Categories of school in Faisalabad city:
There are 5 major categories of schools in Faisalabad city.
A. Category 1: First category is of Elite class private schools. These schools have very
good infrastructure and well-mannered experienced staff. Fee of these schools is
very much high about 20-35000 Rs. Per month. Children of Elite people learn there
and mostly at secondary level they learn international syllabus O-levels. EXAMPLES
of this category are (IVY International Roots, Beacon house, Recourse Academia)
B. Category 2: Second category is of under District management schools. These schools
are run by district governments and mostly children of civil servants and
government employs learn there. These schools have very good teachers and the
fee structure of these schools is also very affordable about 2000-3000 Rs. Per
month. EXAMPLES of this category are (Divisional public school FSD. And Sandal
school)
C. Category 3: Third category is of Punjab government schools. This category has been
summarized above
D. Category 4: Fourth category is of good or mediocre private schools. These schools
have good teachers and follow the obligations of Punjab government. Fee structure
of these schools is also affordable. EXAMPLES of this category are (Educator Schools,
Dar-e-Arqam, Faisal grammar schools)
E. Category 5: fifth category is of lower level private schools which are also known as
the Street Mohalla schools. These schools have no standards for education these
are open just for the sake of business. These schools fee is vary from 800-2000 Rs.
Per month. Their teachers are not qualified and untrained

Results:
Second, third and fourth categories are good in their domains. They have good and
trained science teachers with specialized qualification. Now it depends on parents what
they want and how much they can afford.

Thank you
