Grade:10th class
Subject: Physics
Topics of discussion: Basic Laboratory safety rules
General aims:
 To make understanding of general laboratory safety
 To develop power of thinking and reasoning.
 To develop analyzing power that they can understand
the difference between wrong and right
 To boost up scientific attitude and interest of students.
 To develop scientific creativity in students.
Teaching aids: white board, marker, duster and some
laboratory equipment for demonstration purposes
Instructional aid: multimedia to show different videos
related to particular topic, activities, analyzing daily life
situations and how to manage a basic laboratory.
Instructional setting: Whole class participation with discipline
and fully concentration.

Learning outcomes from the topic:

1. How to work safely in a science lab


2. Know what to do in case of an accident
3. Know the basic lab safety rules, such as washing hands,
following directions, not bringing food or drink into the
lab and keeping the lab area clean
4. Wear appropriate lab attire
5. How to follow the SOP’s (Stranded operating
procedures)

Understanding the lesson:


I. Students should not be allowed to touch any chemicals
or lab equipment unless they are instructed to do so.
II. Students should never ever work in science lab in the
absence of their teachers.
III. Students must follow all the written and verbal
instructions when conducting the science experiment. In
case they do not follow anything, they must clarify it
first.
IV. It is very important to be alert and be cautious when in
the science laboratory. Eating, drinking, playing pranks,
using mobile phones, or listening to music should be
strictly prohibited.
V. Before using any chemicals, read the label carefully.
When mixing chemicals or conducting the experiment,
keep the test tube containing the chemical away from
your face, mouth, and body.
VI. Unused chemicals should never be put back in the
original bottle. They must be disposed off as per the
guidelines given by the lab assistant or science teacher.
VII. Students must be made to wear safety goggles, lab coat,
and shoes in the science laboratory. Loose clothes,
sandals, and open hairs should be a strict NO in school
science labs.
VIII. Examine glassware before using. Do not use chipped or
cracked test tubes or beakers.
IX. Hot apparatus take time to cool down. Allow time to
cool them down and use tongs or heat protective gloves
to pick them up.
X. If any accident takes place, do not panic. Inform your
teacher immediately and lab assistants for help.
