ACTIVITY #1 SEPARATION OF POWERS (Executive)

1. Define the following terms. Cabinet, Civil servant, Portfolio (6


marks)
Ans: Cabinet- is the center of the system of government, it
consists of a group of advisers to the head of the state, who
themselves are usually the head of the administrative
government departments.

Civil servant- refers to the body of employees in any


government agency whose duty is to serve the government of
the day.

Portfolio- A portfolio is a minister's area of responsibility as a


member of Cabinet. Within each portfolio there are one or
more departments, agencies, government appointed boards,
and/or other boards and structures.

2 . Suggest TWO reasons an executive body is necessary in a


country. Explain your answer (4 marks)
Ans: it executes and enforce laws, it does not pass laws or
interpret them.
Has solitary power and accountability from the day-by-day
administration of the country.
3. Explain the term ‘checks and balances’ as it relates to the
executive and separation of powers (6marks)
Ans:  principle of government under which separate branches are
empowered to prevent actions by other branches and are induced
to share power.
4. Explain the differences in functions between the Auditor
General and the Attorney General (4 marks)
Ans: the difference between the auditor general and the Attorney
General is that the auditor general is responsible for the reviewing
and keeping a close check on the collection and spending of
public funds to ensure that there is no misappropriation of public
funds while the attorney general is the principal advisor to the
government, she is appointed by the governor general on the
advice of the prime minister and she is not responsible for
criminal proceedings.
