1. Answer the following questions, in ENGLISH, showing that you have understood
the passage.

(a) What are the general perceptions about the adolescent crisis? [3 marks]

Generally speaking, based on the passage, people believes that the crisis of
adolescence has just entered the day-to-day lives of people today. It I not disputed but
rather considered a natural and necessary step; the period where transition takes place.

(b) According to the passage in what position do young people find themselves?
[2 marks]
As stated in the passage, they find themselves under the spotlight of news and in the
middle of the concerns of the society.

(c) Why was the eighteenth century significant in relation to the notion of adolescence?
[5 marks]
It is important because it is in this era that the emotion of adolescence is first
ever mentioned as a social character. It was done through writings which expressed
complaints about the depredations caused by groups of young people. As it relates to
the crisis, not only are the details of adolescence recognized but all the different
problems that stem from being a youth. These include: the phenomena of gangs, extra-
curricular violence, repulsion from the educational system and suicide rate. All issues
that were evaluated and understood from the eighteenth century which created the
foundation for theories and understanding today.

(d) Identify the main problems present in adolescent years. [4 marks]

The main problems present in adolescent years include:


 Formation and Involvement in Gangs
 Intra-school and extra-curricular violence
 Repulsion from the school system
 Suicide rate

(e) Why is adolescent considered to be a period of transition? [2 marks]

Adolescence is considered a period of transition because the youth moves from a child
to and adult, referred to in the passage as a ‘before and after’. The ‘before’ being
childhood and the ‘after’ adulthood and this transition takes place during adolescence.

(f) How do male and female adolescents differ with respect to non-conformism?
[3 marks]
According to the passage, in order to show difference and uniqueness, the social group
must become non-conformist. It goes on to state that males are more inclined to reactions
turned towards the outside while females more often position on their inhibitions. This
means that males show a more exalted non-conformity than females.
