WELCOME TO
MULTIPLY TRAINING!
Multiply Training is uniquely designed to meet the urgent need for churches that will
reach the ever-growing population with the gospel of Jesus Christ. The sobering
reality of church planting is that many churches don’t make it past the first few
years. With such high turnover, dropout, and burnout rates among church planters
today, we need planters who are well equipped to execute God’s call on their lives.
Our passion behind Multiply Training is to develop strong, healthy leaders. We’ve
developed a unique approach to training planters using 12 leadership competencies.
The developmental process should be highly relational; that’s why we utilize a
coaching and mentoring approach at the heart of our process. We believe that the
best way to equip new leaders is to surround them with a network of experienced
support. Thank you for sharing your church planting experience with each cohort,
and thank you for channeling your love for church planters into this worthwhile
endeavor.
processing their assignments together, you will be helping them build a bond
that will encourage them during the challenging months and years ahead.
2. Inadequate Training
Multiply Training is committed to developing leaders through an intentional and
relational process.
Too many planters place all of their attention on methodology, while neglecting
the practical skills and wisdom of solid leadership. Throughout the training
process, you will help them process assignments geared toward helping them
learn and reinforce 12 leadership competencies.
3. Impotent Churches
Only 4 percent of American churches are reproducing churches. God has not
called us to build empires unto ourselves, hoarding resources and experience.
Christ commissioned His followers to “go into all the world, making disciples...”
Imagine if only 4 percent of the families in America were reproducing! This is
the spiritual crisis we are facing. Multiply Training synergizes the efforts and
resources of kingdom-minded churches to maximize ongoing impact.

Facilitation Techniques
used in the Trainer Guide
Each session in your trainer guide incorporates a variety of adult learning techniques
designed to most effectively stimulate learning. Each session utilizes a pre-
determined pattern of facilitation techniques to move the planters through various
levels of engagement through combinations of discovery, design, descriptive, and
directive learning. The following thumbnail descriptions give you an overview of
each facilitation technique you will use throughout the training.
Strategic Narrative
Strategic Narrative is storytelling presented for a strategic reason in a strategic
way. The trainer should intentionally integrate two to four stories in each session.
The stories are used as a means of describing a real life experience from which the
trainees can learn. Each story is told in such a way to capture attention, engage
the emotions, and inspire new thinking. Strategic Narrative paints a picture in the
imagination of the listeners and helps them “see” lessons through someone else’s
experience.
Directive Teaching
Directive Teaching is a short segment where the facilitator gives practical
application related to the competency for that particular session. Teaching segments
generally come as a means of summarizing a segment in order to focus the learning
and application.
Demonstration
Demonstration utilizes the expertise of the facilitator or a guest presenter to show
how an activity is done with proficiency. The live model gives the trainees insights
into various components of the competency. Typically, the trainees will attempt the
skill following the demonstration.
Guided Debrief
Guided Debrief gives the trainees the opportunity to verbally process what they
have learned from a pre-assigned reading or activity. The intent of this exercise is to
have them process their learning with peers to gain further insight and application.
The engagement of this activity is very high, but the application may be less
specific.
Design Analysis
Design Analysis is an exercise that places a sample of something (website, prayer
newsletter, etc.) in front of trainees and engages them in analyzing the various
components of the work. This gives the students an opportunity to view an
expert’s work and understand what makes it effective. It also gives the trainees the
opportunity to ask questions and re-design their own work or learn new aspects of a
particular skill.
Self-Assessment
Self-Assessment is an exercise to help the learners evaluate their level of skill or
experience related to the particular session competency. It is used as a means of
raising the felt need of the learner. The trainer then asks debrief questions to help
draw out personal insights from the exercise. This technique also gives the trainer an
understanding of the learner’s skill level.
Brainstorming
Brainstorming is a technique the facilitator uses to get spontaneous input from
participants to build a list of ideas, solutions, or concepts. Mulling over ideas
together is intended to stir thinking and generate a discovery level of learning.
Group Coaching
Group Coaching takes place when you’re working with more than one trainee.
You will instruct each one to put an example of his design work for all to see. You
and the group will then provide feedback to some or all of the students. You use
their work as examples to help teach key principles about the session topic. The
disadvantage is that the participants do not have an opportunity to speak privately
with a coach to discuss their data.
Strategy Development
Strategy Development challenges participants to design action steps or design
an outcome from the training session. This exercise provides the highest level of
engagement and application for the trainee. Whatever they design through strategic
development will become essential elements to their plan. Debriefing this exercise
creates a sense of accountability for the trainee.
Scenario
Scenarios are case studies/stories the learner generally reads ahead of time to
process a situation. The characters in the scenario exhibit certain leadership
behaviors (either positive or negative examples). Debrief questions help the learners
process the situation and how it relates to their specific situation. This narrative style
of learning is intended to help the learners think in a detailed way about their own
leadership context.
Practice
Practice gives the learner the opportunity to use the competency or an aspect of
the skill they’ve been learning. Sometimes they practice as individuals; other times,
the whole learning cohort practices the competency together. The intent is to help
the learner assess and make specific application on how to improve in the particular
competency.
