Thank you for choosing MSU-Iligan Institute of Technology as the school for your graduate studies. We
hope that we will be able to help you in achieving your goals in your pursuit of knowledge.

It is in the 2nd Semester AY 2014-2015 that the School of Graduate Studies instituted the submission of a
concept paper as an admission requirement for all graduate programs.

Below are frequently asked questions which may help you realize the importance of a concept paper as
you embark on your graduate studies.

 What is a concept paper?

A concept paper is a summary written a by students embarking on research to gather and present
preliminary ideas: to review a field of study, state a research question, identify methods, and indicate the
significance of a line of research, often including a budget and timeline. It tells the reader what the
research is, why it is important and how it will be carried out. Interestingly enough, even Wikipedia defines
a concept paper as a requirement submitted to a university’s graduate program for admission.

 Why is a concept paper important?

A concept paper can be considered as a research plan. When a student enters a graduate program with a
clear research interest in mind, it helps him/her stay focused in his/her studies. The concept paper enables
the student to choose an adviser at the onset of his/her studies which will help him/her establish a longer
professional relationship with his/her mentor, allow him/her longer time in discussing the direction and
future plans (most probably publication ) of his/her research and suits the requirements of his/her courses
according to the demands of his/her research. The best advantage of requiring a concept paper at the
onset is that it helps the student graduate on time, if not earlier.

 Will a student be denied of an admission on the basis of his/her concept paper?

The purpose of requiring a concept paper during admission is for the department to assess the research
potential of a student. It is also to guide him/her in his research plans. If the concept paper needs
improvement, then the Department will assign a professor to help the student to enhance it. A student’s
admission documents include the concept paper.

 How long should a concept paper be?

The length of a concept paper varies. It may be 2-3 pages long or even longer. Different academic programs
have different requirements. For your convenience however, the Office has come up with a template
which will guide you in writing your concept paper. You may download the form from our website. Please

Background of the Study (What have you read that has had an impact on your thinking about the topic?)

Ang Siyudad ng Tangub ay hindi lang mayaman sa lamang-dagat kundi mayaman din ito
sa tradisyon, paniniwala, kultura at panitikan. Sinasabing bago pa man dumating ang mga
Kastila ay mayroon nang alamat ang ating mga ninuno at isa ang lugar ng Tangub na may
sariling panitikan partikular na ang alamat ngunit hindi ito nailathala sapagkat pasalindila ang
paraan ng pagpreserba nito. Ang layunin nito ay upang manlibang ng mga tao sapagkat
kadalasan itong ikinukwento bilang pampalipas-oras.

Sinasabing ito ay maituturing na kabang-yaman ng mga Tangubanon at dito nasasalamin

ang mga karanasan at naging buhay ng mga sinaunang Tangubanon. Dito naisasalaysay ang mga
paraan ng pamumuhay ng mga ninuno, na maaaring hindi pa nailimbag at nanatili pang
sinasalindila hanggang sa kasalukuyan.

Statement of the Problem (as far as you are aware of, what is the gap of knowledge in your research interest
based on readings/existing literatures? Why does this research need to be conducted?

Mahalaga ang pag-aaral na ito sapagkat isa ito sa mga paraan upang muling buhayin ang
mga alamat ng Tangub, na unti-unti ng nakakalimutan sa panahong ngayon. Malaki rin ang
maging kontribusyon nito sa panitikan ng rehiyon upang mas lalong dumami ang mga naisatitik
na panitikan at maging bahagi rin ang nasabing pag-aaral sa historikal at sa turismo ng Tangub.
Objectives of the Study (What does the study hope to achieve? Give at least three).

Layunin ng pag-aaral na ito na likumin ang mga alamat sa mga piling barangay ng
Siyudad ng Tangub. Kaugnay nito pinagsikapang sagutin ang mga sumusunod na katanungan:

1. Ano-ano ang mga alamat sa mga piling barangay ng Siyudad ng Tangub?

1.1. Etyolohikal
1.2. Di-etyolohikal
 2. Ano-ano ang mga ugaling ipinakita ng mga Tangubanon batay sa mga nakalap na

alamat?

Research Locale and Respondents (Where will the study be conducted? Who will be the target respondents?)

Mga taong naninirahan sa Tangub sa loob ng dalawampu’t limang (25) taon at mahigit ang
mga impormanteng pagkukunan ng mga alamat. Limampu (50) pataas ang edad ng mga
impormante upang masiguro na nanggaling mismo sa syudad ng Tangub ang mga alamat na
isinalaysay. Tatlong impormante ang kuhanan ng mga kwento sa bawat barangay.

Literature Review: (What literature do you intend to review and why? Five for MA/MS students and at least 10
for PhD/Doctorate students)

Magiging makabuluhan ang pag-aaral na ito kung magkakaroon ng masusi at malawak

na pag-aaral tungkol sa mga alamat dito sa Pilipinas. Ang sumusunod na mga kaugnay na
literatura ay mayroong malaking maiaambag sa kabuuang pag-aaral na ito.
1. Mga libro tungkol sa panitikan ng Pilipinas
2. Mga libro at artikulo tungkol sa mga kwentong-bayan ng Pilipinas
3. Mga babasahin tungkol sa alamat
4. Mga artikulo tungkol sa mga alamat ng Pilipinas
5. Mga libro at artikulo tungkol sa mga alamat ng iba’t ibang rehiyon
Theoretical Framework (What tentative theory/ies will you use in analyzing your material? Why this/these
theories?

Sa gagawing pag-aaral na ito, layunin ng mga mananaliksik na malikom ang mga alamat sa
piling barangay ng Tangub. Batay sa mga impormasyong nakalap, maaaring may kaugnayan sa
kasaysayan ng lugar ang mga alamat na ito. Kung kaya ay isa sa mga teoryang pagbabasehan ng
pag-aaral na ito ay ang teoryang Historikal/Sosyolohikal.

Proposed Methods/Procedures (This answers the question: How will you conduct the study?)

Personal na tutungo sa mga napiling barangay sa Tangub ang mga mananaliksik upang
makalikom ng mga alamat. Ngunit bago ito isasagawa, pupuntahan muna ang opisina ng alkalde
sa nasabing siyudad upang humingi ng pahintulot sa gagawing pag-aaral. Tutungo ang mga
mananaliksik sa mga punong barangay ng mga piling lugar pagkatapos aprobahan, upang
humingi ng pahintulot sa gagawing pagmamasid sa lugar at hihingi rin ng mungkahi sa kung
sino ang pwedeng pagkunan ng mga alamat. Pupuntahan ang mga nabanggit na pangalan ng
 mga impormante at aalamin ang edad at ang bilang ng taong paninirahan sa Tangub upang
masiguro na pasok sa ginawang krayterya ang mga impormante. Gagamit ang mga mananaliksik
ng video recorder habang magsasalaysay ang mga impormante upang maging mas madali ang
pagsusulat ng mga alamat na isasalaysay. Gagamitin ang kwalitatibo at kombinasyon ng
desinyong deskriptibo.
