Avon type 1535-161G Gas Generator – FOR SALE
2. Introduction
BP Norway is currently offering for sale a used Rolls Royce Avon type 1535-161G Industrial Gas
Generator. The engine is currently located in storage at the Rolls Royce warehouse in Aberdeen, UK.
The engine has been a rotating replacement for Gas Compressors on the BP VALHALL Offshore
Platform. The engine is offered for sale because gas compression on the Valhall PCP platform is no
longer required.
This document outlines the history of the engine, its current condition and the proposed timetable for
this sale.
3. The Engine
3.1 General: The engine is an Avon type 1535-161G Industrial Gas Generator serial number 38116. The
engine has run on Gas only. The engine was built as a 1535-121G and upgraded to 161G in November
2009. The engine was removed from service on 18 April 2012 and has been held in storage in serviceable
condition.
3.2 History: The engine was built in 1979 and installed on the Valhall Platform in October 1982. It was
maintained by a Core Crew including Rolls Wood Group and Rolls Royce Field Engineers; overhauls of
the engine were carried out by Rolls Wood Group. It is a standard industrial engine that has been used to
drive a Dresser Rand GT54 Power Turbine for Gas Compression at 15,200kw. The engine has run 97,164
TSN and 8218 TSO and 1150 TSR. The recorded starts since last overhaul in 2008 are approx. 49.
3.3 Recent Overhaul History: The engine was last overhauled at 88946 TSN, in June 2008; and the
engine was most recently in for repair during April 2012. Multiple repairs have been necessary throughout
the life of the unit as evidenced in the Log Book. The engine has experienced a small number of high
cycle fatigue failures as a result of high frequency vibration resulting in corrosion of turbine disks and
blades, fuel related. In order to closely monitor engine condition as a result of its history, it was
recommended to increase the Inspection Frequency to every 1000 hours (up from the usual 5000 hours)
and Overhauls increased to every 15-18,000 hours (normally 18,000 hours) and both recommendations
were implemented.
3.5 Exclusions: The Power Turbine GT54 remains on the Platform and is NOT included in the sale.
Transport Cradle and Storage Bag are NOT included in the sale.
