INTRODUCTION
Tobacco-related diseases are a cause and consequence of poverty. It is not only merely a
social and cultural problem, but it is also multifaceted and encompasses biomedical,
economic, and geopolitical reasons too. There are numerous synthetics contained in
tobacco smoke that presents hazards both to smokers and non-smokers. It very well may be
unsafe to try and inhale a little tobacco smoke. "Of the in excess of 7,000 synthetic
substances in tobacco smoke, 250 are known to be harmfulful, including hydrogen cyanide,
carbon monoxide, and smelling salts". Here in our analytical research we tried to look at the
various effects of smoking related diseases and social or cultural impacts . In addition to that
we tried to analyse the existing anti-tobacco policies that are present in our country and how
they shape the entire tobacco industry . We also dive deep into what sort of
recommendations one could suggest for creating more awareness and lowering the number
of users over time in India .
OBJECTIVE
Objective of the analytical analysis of the report was to find the major health hazards
smoking does to a person and tried to understand how consumption levels are related by
comparing demographics and other factors . We also tried to analyse the already existing
policies regulated by the government of India in its fight against the usage of tobacco and
fruitful they are towards fulfilling its promise . Finally we tried understanding the complexities
of tobacco usage among Indian youth and what steps or awareness programs could be
initiated to tackle this problem.
KEY FINDINGS
We have used the data provided by the Global Adult Tobacco Survey – a survey of 74,037
individuals (15 years & above) conducted across India by the Tata Institute of Social
Sciences on behalf of the Ministry of Health, Govt of India. to come to our key findings :

A. According to the findings of the report, 28.6 percentage of the Indian population aged
above 15 used tobacco in some form or the other. Another interesting aspect was
that cigarettes comprised of just 14 percentage of the whole lot of tobacco products
available. So, consumption of tobacco related products can be attributed to people in
the lower strata of the income level. So necessary steps should be taken to raise
awareness more among this section of people who use bidis, gutkhas etc. which are
relatively cheaper than cigarettes.
B. Real cigarette prices have increased around 4.7% on a yearly CAGR basis from
2008 to 2018. According to the report affordability of cigarettes in India is stated at 13
percentage compared to 1-3 percentage in countries such as Japan, USA , Germany
etc. Also the excise taxes on cigarettes are pretty less compared to the developed
countries . Hence while devising policies to reduce tobacco use one must take care
of the taxes to be implemented .

C. Tobacco companies can engage in corporate social responsibility activities and

corporate sponsorship of events. This enables them to present themselves as beneficial
for the society, which is misleading.
RECOMMENDATIONS
1. While India has figuring out necessities for pictorial admonitions on tobacco bundles,
measures, for example, plain bundling ought to be embraced as they have been
demonstrated to decrease tobacco utilization.
2. Tobacco organizations can take part in corporate social obligation exercises and
corporate sponsorship of occasions. This empowers them to introduce themselves as
gainful for the general public, which is deceiving.
3. Accurate demographic and psychological criteria must be used to manage policies to
reduce tobacco consumption.
4. Retail location publicizing keeps on being rehearsed in India notwithstanding a
prohibition on promoting of tobacco items. Tobacco items are noticeably shown in
stores and booths, which tempts customers. Subsequently, retail location promoting
and show of tobacco items should be restricted.

CONCLUSION
The tobacco utilization levels in India keep on being expanding. Persistent assessment of
tobacco utilization example will help in creating compelling tobacco control intercessions.
Most of the huge investigations have restrictions since one of the individuals in the family
unit gave data. Local area-based investigations where information assortment is done from
every one of the members at various focuses in time will be a superior wellspring of data to
comprehend the patterns. Reduction in tobacco consumption will require redoubling efforts
to prevent initiation and promote cessation among the large proportion of youth, who
currently are tobacco consumers. Cessation counselling conducted for families will be
effective as they influence each other than individually.
