Lesson
Negative Effects of Cigarette
2.1 Smoking
The respiratory and circulatory systems are functional in the
exchange of gases. It cannot work alone and function properly, which are truly
dependent on each other. The benefit of one system is beneficial to the other, and
the danger of one system is a danger to the other. A healthy lifestyle is essential in
managing and taking care of the respiratory system, improvement of health, and
well-being of a person. Smoking is dangerous to one’s health which is the leading
cause of death and illness in public health worldwide.

What’s In

You will find out in this lesson the negative effects of cigarette
smoking, how it damages the respiratory system and other body parts. Long term
use or exposure to cigarettes increases the risk of acquiring respiratory-related
diseases. You will be able to compare a healthy lung from an unhealthy lung of a
smoker. You will be determining different kinds of diseases and their underlying
symptoms that affect the respiratory system. Images are provided for you to
visualize the part you are reading, to explore, and be educated, and key factors that
affect the health caused by smoking.

Everything is provided for you to learn in this module; read the words,
understand the thought, and highlight the terms that might help you accomplish
this module.

Notes to the Teacher

The goal of this lesson is to ensure the learners that they have
familiarized the negative effects of cigarette smoking on one's

Smoking: Harmful Effects to Health and Environment

Lifestyle is a way of living that includes the habit, behavior, and living style
condition of a person. There are lifestyle conditions of an individual that can be
harmful to health and can cause illness like cigarette smoking and drinking
alcohol. Smoking has a negative impact on the environment and when the air
becomes polluted it might cause serious health conditions.

Smoking and exposure to smoke is one cause of death and disease in the
Philippines. Long-term smoking may lead to factors that affect the well-being of a
person. It damages the air sacs in the lungs, weakens the immune system to fight
infection and other diseases, and present chemicals and substances that are toxic
in the body.

Smoke exposure emits by cigarettes is deadly to the health of smokers and non-
smokers. Non-smokers are at great risk of exposure to second-hand smoke from
inhaled chemicals and substances in the cigarette.

Negative Effects of Cigarette Smoking

Smoking can cause serious problems to the respiratory system and different parts
of the body.

1. Cigarettes contain chemicals and substances that can be toxic in the body.
Nicotine is a chemical stimulant that can be addictive. Tar is a toxic chemical
which contains carcinogen that can cause cancer.

2. Cigarette smoking produces carbon monoxide which is a gas produced when

smoking in an enclosed space. Carbon monoxide poisoning is caused by a large
number of smoked cigarettes that lowers the percentage of oxygen and replaced by
a high percentage of carbon monoxide in the bloodstream.

3. Exposure to dust, pollens, and smoke can trigger allergic reactions that cause
breathing difficulties. Asthma is an inflammation and narrowing of airways making
it hard to breathe.

4
Figure 2-1. Asthma

The common symptoms of asthma are cough, shortness of breath, wheezing, and
tightness of the chest.

4. Smoking can cause lung disease that damages the airways, air sacs (alveoli) in
the lungs.

Figure 2-2. Emphysema

Emphysema is a known cause of the chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

(COPD) that cause long-term breathing problems and poor flow of air that
worsens in time. The common symptoms of emphysema are difficulty in
breathing, wheezing, and chest pain.

5. Smoking can cause irritation, inflammation, and swelling of the bronchial tubes
called bronchitis. Some of the significant symptoms of bronchitis are cough with
clear, yellow, or green mucus (sputum), shortness of breath, and wheezing.

Figure 2-3. Bronchitis

5
There are two types of bronchitis:
• Acute bronchitis – a common type of bronchitis, symptoms
lasts for a few weeks.

• Chronic bronchitis – more serious type of bronchitis,

symptoms lasts, and comes back.
6. Smoking can weaken your immune system against bacteria and viruses by
damaging your body’s natural defense.

Figure 2-4. Pneumonia

Pneumonia is a type of lung infection that causes the air sacs filled with fluid or
pus which cause breathing difficulties. The age groups at risk in pneumonia are
ages 0-2 and 65 years old and above due to immune system strength. Other
symptoms are chest pain, cough with mucus (phlegm), fatigue, and loss of appetite.

7. Cigarette smoking causes most cases of cancer.

Healthy Lung Lung Cancer

Figure 2-5. Lung Cancer

Lung cancer is the most typical kind of cancer and reason behind death. It is
caused by abnormal growth of cells in the lung tissues. The most common

6
symptoms are long duration of cough, coughing up blood, chest pain, loss of
weight, and shortness of breath.

8. Tuberculosis is an infectious disease that can be transmitted through air

droplets that spread from one person to another person, like coughing, sneezing,
talking, and laughing.

Figure 2-6. Tuberculosis

This disease is caused by a bacterium called Mycobacterium tuberculosis which

attacks the lungs and can spread into the different parts of the body. Usual
symptoms are a cough that lasts for three weeks, chest pain, coughing with blood-
streaked sputum (phlegm), night sweats, and weight loss.

9. Smoking relates to death and risks in health conditions. Cardiovascular diseases

affect the heart and blood vessels, respiratory diseases affect the lungs by
damaging the airways and alveoli, and cancer cause in any part of the body.

What is It

Cigarette smoking relates to many diseases that affect the respiratory

system and other systems in the body. A cigarette is a thin cylinder
containing cut tobacco leaves, chemicals, and substances rolled in paper for
smoking. The chemical and substances present in the cigarette cause harm
and danger to the health and weaken the immune system. The common
symptom present in respiratory diseases is a cough that clears the throat
from irritants. Lifestyle is very important in living a healthy life, remove
all the negative habits that may cause harm and damage to your

7
system. Stop smoking, eat nutritious foods, exercise regularly, and get
enough rest and sleep.

2.2 diseases in the circulatory system

and respiratory system

You dream yourself growing old with fewer disabilities than your parents or
grandparents. But how can you do that? You have observed nowadays a lot of
people suffering diseases that are mostly associated with their bad habits. Do
habits and lifestyles really affect circulatory system and respiratory system?

What’s In

In this lesson, you will learn how to detect and prevent diseases in the
circulatory system and respiratory system. Identify them and avoid the
malpractices that will promote the disease. Always remember the saying “ An Ounce
of Prevention is Worth a Pound of Cure” by Benjamin Franklin.

Notes to the Teacher

The objective of this lesson is for you to know how to
detect and prevent diseases of the circulatory system and
respiratory system.

11
What’s New

In order for you to know how to detect and protect the diseases of the
circulatory system and respiratory system you must learned first what are some
common diseases and their symptoms. Here is an overview of some of the diseases
or problems and symptoms that affect these systems.

Respiratory Diseases and Their Symptoms

1. Asthma is a severe allergic reaction that causes wheezing, coughing
and breathing difficulties. During an asthma attack, the bronchioles
go into spasms, squeezing the air passages.
2. Bronchitis is a condition in which the linings of the bronchial tubes
become irritated and swollen. The passageways to the alveoli may
swell and clog with mucus. This often causes severe coughing and
makes it hard to breathe. Bronchitis is more common in smokers than
in nonsmokerss.
3. Emphysema is a condition in which the lungs lose their elasticity. It
causes shortnes of breath.
4. Pneumonia is a condition in which the alveoli become filled with fluid.
This prevents the exchange of gases in the lungs.
5. Lung cancer is a disease in which tumors formed as a result of
irregular and uncontrolled cell growth. Many studies have shown a
relationship between lung cancer and smoking.

Circulatory Diseases and Their Symptoms

DISEASE DESCRIPTION
Atherosclerosis or develops when arteries become too rigid and narrow to ease
hardening of the the pressure of blood pumped out of the heart. It may develop
arteries from hypertension ,prolonged stress or habitual use of a
stimulant
Hypertension or increase in blood pressure that does not go away even when
high blood the body is at rest. It develops from excessive constriction of
pressure the arterioles. Severe hypertension is likely to cause heart
failure or kidney failure.
Myocarditis inflammation of the heart muscles pericarditis is the
inflammation of the lining outside the heart due to infection
Stroke sudden interruption in the blood supply of brain. Most strokes
are caused by an abrupt blockage of arteries leading to the
brain.
Aneurysm enlargement of an artery caused by weakness in the arterial
wall. Often there are no symptoms but a rupture aneuryms
may lead to fatal complications.

12
What is It

As respiratory system initiates gas exchange within the body the circulatory
system is responsible for carrying and distributing gases, nutrients, hormones,
antibodies and other substances needed by the body. They work as team, therefore
if one of them has a problem or disorder the other system will be affected. So
detection and protection are very important. Proper knowledge, proper hygiene and
self-discipline are some factors that will help promote healthy respiratory and
circulatory system.

2.3 Lifestyle Affecting the
Functioning of Respiratory
and Circulatory Systems
Do you know how good your lifestyle is? Lifestyle refers to the health
activities you do in your daily life. A person’s lifestyle has significant impact on the
functions of his respiratory and circulatory systems. If we have good lifestyle our
body would reap positive benefits, if we have bad lifestyle, then, our body would
suffer.

What’s In

In this lesson, you will identify healthy from unhealthy lifestyle and infer
how one’s lifestyle can affect the functioning of your respiratory and circulatory
systems.

Graphic Organizer KWL chart will be used to better learn the lesson.
Honestly fill out the column “What I Know” with what you have known and “What I
Want to Know” for what you want or should learn. Column ‘What I Learned” should
be answered after the lesson. USE SEPARATE SHEET OF PAPER FOR YOUR

15
What’s New

Lifestyle that Affects You

The following are some examples of your daily activities that have impact on
your body in general.

1. Drinking of water. Take at least 8 glasses of water. Water is necessary

for carrying out of bodily functions, removing waste and transporting nutrients and
oxygen throughout the body. Lack of water may lead to dehydration, headache,
sickness and waste build up in the body.

2. Sleeping. Get enough sleep. During this time the body works in repairing
tissues and organs. Chemicals that strengthen the immune system start to
circulate in your blood. When you sleep, levels of growth hormone go up and stress
hormone goes down. Sleep deprivation can also cause adverse effect to your health.
3. Eating habits. Have a
balanced diet. What we eat is very
important as the body gets its
required energy and nutrition from
food we eat. It is suggested that we
consume 5 servings of fruits and
vegetables per day. Unhealthy
snacks like junk foods and
sweetened beverages and processed
foods are simply not good for you.
Most nutritional value is lost in the
making of processed foods and the
added preservatives are bad for
your health. These foods contain a
high amount of salt, which leads to high blood pressure and heart disease.
4. Exercise. By moving your body for 30 minutes a day, you strengthen
your lungs and you will lower your risk of disease, create a higher bone density and
potentially increase your life span. Inadequate exercise may lead into heart
disease, colon cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes, and even colds or flue.

5. Healthy body weight, defined as a normal body mass index (BMI), which
is between 18.5 and 24.9. Specifically, people with obesity considered to be healthy
were 49 percent more likely to develop coronary heart disease, as well as 96
percent more likely to have heart failure. Additionally, people with obesity had a 7
percent higher chance of having a stroke.

6. Cigarette smoking. Smoking is bad, period. Smokers are more likely

than non-smokers to develop heart disease, stroke, and lung cancer. If you’re a
smoker, quit for better health—not just for yourself, but for your family and
friends. If you don’t smoke, stay that way.

16
7. Alcohol drinking. Drinking too much over time can cause chronic
physical and mental health issues. Heavy drinking can cause or contribute to liver
damage, cardiovascular disease, and multiple types of cancer.

Choose healthy lifestyle…

Healthy habits make a big difference. People who have healthy lifestyle enjoy
impressively longer lives than those who are not. They reduced the risk of getting
terminal illnesses and diseases such as cancer, diabetes and their energy is boosts
and their moods improve. Those who have the bad habits were far more likely to die
prematurely from cancer or cardiovascular disease.

Being healthy also means getting annual physical and any recommended
medical tests and immunization at the doctor’s clinic.
If you are not following the healthy lifestyle, making even a little change now
can really make a difference to your health. Gradually make changes toward a
healthier lifestyle like walking to school, preparing your own meal, cutting down of
processed food and drinking lots of water. It is better to practice good habits one
at a time rather than trying to change everything at once.

What is It

The best way to protect the respiratory and circulatory systems from
diseases, and long term illnesses is to have a healthy lifestyle. Healthy lifestyle
means having a balanced diet, regular exercise; adequate rest or sleep and enough
water. Having bad lifestyle like poor eating habits, cigarette smoking and alcohol
drinking can lead into diseases or ailments that are detrimental for your health.

Respiratory and Circulatory
System

The respiratory and circulatory system has a very important role in the
organisms body. The respiratory system enables gaseous exchange to occur
between an organisms and its external environment. Meanwhile the circulatory
system supplies food nutrients and oxygen to all body cells. Maintaining a healthy
lungs and heart is essential for a better life.

What’s In

In this lesson, you will utilize your creativity in creating your own campaign
or dissemination materials. You will create an effective way or technique of
informing, influencing and motivating individual or public audience about the
importance of having healthy lifestyle in avoiding such diseases of the respiratory
and circulatory system.

Notes to the Teacher

Make sure that the learners have understood and infer
how one’s lifestyle can affect the functioning of respiratory and
circulatory system.

20
What’s New

Health is Wealth
“Health (World Health Organization- WHO) a state of complete of physical,
mental, and social wellbeing and not simply the absence of disease.”

According to study the leading causes of death among Filipinos are the
diseases to the heart, diseases of the vascular system, pneumonias, and all form of
tuberculosis. Poor and unhealthy lifestyle is the common causes of the diseases of
the respiratory and circulatory systems.

The best way to prevent diseases of the respiratory and circulatory systems
is to have a healthy lifestyle, which includes proper exercise, enough rest, proper
hygiene, balanced diet and avoiding vices such as cigarette smoking and drinking
alcohol. Diseases can also be detected with regular health check-up and physical
screening.

Why Information Dissemination is Important in Maintaining

a Healthy Community?
Information dissemination is a key or a strategy used to inform the public
about the health concern and to maintain important health issues within the
community. The used of mass and multi- media and other technological
innovations to disseminate useful health information to the public, increase the
awareness of specific aspects of individual and collective health as well as the
importance of health in development.
Dissemination of health awareness includes written and verbal strategies to
influence and empower individuals, populations, and communities to make
healthier choices. When proper strategies are used to disseminate information
related to health people become aware about the diseases, it encourage them to
adapt healthy practices, sustain them with positive healthy behaviour that
empower them to make healthy choices in their life.
Rapid and effective dissemination of information is critical during health
crisis and one of the most effective ways of disseminating information is the use
mass media or multimedia.

21
What is It

Proper dissemination of information promotes awareness among people in

the community about the proper way of taking care of the respiratory and
circulatory system. Using some campaign materials like poster, slogan and even
the mass and multimedia will increase the awareness of the people and it might
help them maintain a healthy lifestyle. Everybody has its own important role in
disseminating information in promoting health education even in a small group of
people or within your community.

(Collaboration and Leadership)
• Goal: Your objective is to create helpful information to inform the
public about effective ways of taking care of the respiratory and
circulatory system. The challenge is how you will able to convince and
lead the people to take action rather than merely accepting the
presented information. The obstacle to attain your goal is the
reluctance and preconceived notion of the people against changing
their lifestyle to promote health.

• Role: You are a student. There is a responsibility given to you that is

to create public information materials. You are asked to disseminate
information to the public regarding a lifestyle that ensures healthy
condition of the respiratory and circulatory systems.

• Audience: Your target individuals to receive the information that you

will provide are the people in your community. Therefore, it is
important that you convince them to consider the ways of taking care
their bodies, especially the respiratory and circulatory systems.

• Situation: Upon gathering information from the local health workers,

you have found out that poor lifestyle affects the performance of the
respiratory and circulatory systems. Many people are unaware of this,
so they simply continue with their busy lifestyle, neglecting their
health, and exploiting their bodies. The challenge involves dealing

22
with this by creating a poster that will stir up the people’s
consciousness in having a healthy lifestyle.

• Product: Design a wall poster or placard that will make members of

your community aware of how they can effectively take care of their
respiratory and circulatory systems. You may use any medium for
