GUIDE CARD 1

Human body is a magnificent creation. It is full of surprises and amazing

processes that can carry out incredible tasks and activities. It is like a machine
that is able to function with proper organization of parts and systems.
In the past, you were introduced to the different levels of organizations in
the human body and the mechanisms involved in it. You have learned that the
human body is composed of different systems, which are collections of cells,
tissues, and organs, each of which has a special job that keeps you alive.
Whether you eat, play, dance, sing, or sleep; each part of your organ systems
performs particular functions.
Have you ever wonder why you can breathe? What keeps you breathing?
Or where does the air go when you pull air to your body when you breathe?

This SIM will guide you General Instructions:

in understanding the
RESPIRATORY
SYSTEM including its ➢ Read and understand the
parts and functions and instructions carefully.
how it facilitates ➢ Perform all the designated
breathing. activities provided in this
material.
➢ Finish all the assessment cards
to determine how much you
have learned.
➢ Enrich yourself with additional
enjoyable activities.
➢ Most importantly, have fun
while learning!

GUIDE CARD 2

A Breath of Air…
The respiratory system is made up of the organs in the body that
help us to breathe.Just remember that the word respiration is linked to
breathing. The function of the of the respiratory system is to bring about the
exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide, air enters the body through the air
passageways and fills the lungs, where gas exchange takes place.

Air enters the body through the nose and mouth, where it is filtered,
warmed, and moistened. After the air has been filtered, warmed, and
moistened, it enters the pharynx, which is also a passageway for food. From
the pharynx, air enters the larynx , which also contains the vocal cords. After
the larynx, air enters the down the trachea or windpipe. The trachea is a
hollow tube shape by rings of cartilage that serves as passageway of air into
the lungs. The trachea divides into two bronchi. The bronchi (singular:
bronchus) are the tubes that bring air to the lungs from the trachea. Each
bronchus leads to one lung. Once inside the lungs, the bronchi branch into
smaller and smaller air passageways called bronchioles. The bronchioles
continue to divide until they finally end in clusters of tiny air sacs called
alveoli (singular: alveolus) that appear in grape like clusters. Surrounding
each alveolus is a network of capillaries, where gas exchange takes place.

The diaphragm is a dome-

shaped smooth muscle that
separates the chest cavity from the
abdominal cavity. Breathing is
directed by contracting and relaxing
the diaphragm.

A. A hollow tube that serves as
passageway of air into the lungs

B. The organ through which the air

enters
_______2.
C. Also called bronchial tubes, two
branching tubes that connect the

GUIDE CARD 3

Take A Deep Breath

When you breathe in or inhale, the diaphragm muscle contracts.

Inhaling moves the diaphragm down and expands the chest cavity.
Simultaneously, the ribs move up and increase the size of the chest cavity.
There is now more space and less air pressure inside the lungs. Air pushes
in from the outside where there is higher air pressure. It pushes into the
lungs where there is lower air pressure. When you breathe out or exhale,
the diaphragm muscle relaxes. The diaphragm and ribs return to their
original place. The chest cavity returns to its original size. There is now less
space and greater air pressure inside the lungs. It pushes the air outside
where there is lower air pressure. The average person inhales and exhales
almost 20,000 times everyday.

ACTIVITY CARD 4

“This Way”
Directions: Trace the pathway of air through the respiratory tract. Draw an arrow to
indicate which part of the body the air first enters.

8
ACTIVITY CARD 5
“In or Out?”

Some people think that air in the lungs makes the chest move in and out. This
thought is incorrect. In fact, it is the moving of your chest that makes your lungs
expand and contracts. The size of the chest changes when you breathe because of
the actions of your rib muscles and your diaphragm muscle.

Directions: Using the figure below, choose the correct word and write it on the blank
provided.

FIGURE A FIGURE B

When you INHALE (FIG. A)

1. the ribs move ______________________________(inward OR outward)

2. the diaphragm moves ______________________(upward OR downward)
3. there is now __________________(more OR less) space in the chest area
4. air rushes ____________________________ ( in OR out) to fill the space

When you EXHALE (FIG. B)

5. the ribs move ______________________________ (inward OR outward)

6. the diaphragm moves ______________________(upward OR downward)
7. there is now __________________(more OR less) space in the chest area
8. because of the pressure, air moves __________(into OR out )of the lungs

ASSESSMENT CARD 3
Directions: Sequence the following statements about the flow of air in the
respiratory system using numbers 1-10. Write your answers in the
circle provided before each statement.

The entering air is made warm, damp and clean of unknown

particles.

The bronchi carry air into each cone-sahaped organs called

lungs.

From the hair-like tubes bronchioles, the air goes to small air
balloons called alveoli

The air moves down through the windpipe.

The air flows into the finer subdivisions of bronchi found inside
the lungs called bronchioles

The body breathes in the air which is sucked in through the nose.

Alveoli are wrapped around by capillaries which are small blood

vessels with thin walls that the oxygen from the air easily seeps
through the blood stream.

The air passes through the two branching tubes called bronchi.

As oxygen seeps through the blood stream, the carbon dioxide

seeps through the alveoli and is then removed from the body
when we breathe out or exhale.

After breathing out, the inhaling and exhaling is repeated in the

process of respiration.
