Reaction on the talk of Sherry Turkle

“Connected but Alone”

Sherry Turkle is a psychologist. She stated her view on technology and how technology has
impacted our lives with communication. Our communication with other people has been different ever
since technology has evolved. Technology change who we are. People nowadays depends on
technology.

As I was sitting and watching this presentation, I noticed how it stole my attention for a couple
of minutes until the presentation ends. There’s a lot of things I remembered and stock on my mind. Just
like Sherry says, “We end up hiding to each other even we are connected each other”. Sometimes, we
prefer to be alone and spend our time with our gadgets rather than go out with our friends, having
quality time and conversations to each other. “We’re lonely and afraid of intimacy”. A quote in the
video I can’t forget. People spend time with machines rather than talking. Others prefer to be alone
because it seems that no one is listening and understand their thoughts and feelings. They’re afraid of
people for some reasons. “The illusion of companionship and demands for friendship”. Technology now
was design for companions. You can’t feel alone and lonely as long as you have your gadgets on your
side. They act like just our companion. Through technology we share our thoughts and feelings. When
life is hard, there is technology and it makes our lives easier. Technology seems like worlds.
All in all, I’ve come to learn a lot of things and realizations. Even though technology affected our
communications with one another, let us still have good and meaningful talks with other people. Let us
also not be dependent on technology. Technology will not always be there for us. We must help
ourselves to live without depending on the technology.
