Personal Food Diary Insights

The document discusses a week-long food logging experience. Some key findings include: 1) Processed snacks like chips and cake provided fewer calories than healthier options like fruit despite taking up most calories. 2) A lack of fresh fruits and vegetables in the diet was noticed, which may be insufficient for an active lifestyle. 3) Energy levels were generally normal but tended to dip after workdays without breakfast. 4) Goals going forward include increasing protein intake, substituting sugary foods for fruit, and focusing on gut health through probiotic foods and home workouts.

  • Interview Reflections on Dietary Habits: Discusses various reflections concerning dietary habits, personal feelings, and observations made by an individual during a diet record week.
  • Diet Monitoring Logs: Logs daily meal and exercise details recorded using a diet monitoring app over a period of days with detailed nutritional breakdowns.

1. What was the biggest thing you noticed during the week recording your intake?

I’ve never felt the need to record my food, my parents had me grow up on a diet
containing mostly rice, vegetables, and some sort of protein. But obviously, I still indulge
myself in snacks and deserts. This project was the first time I’ve ever recorded my food.
Although for the most part I stayed within my calorie limit, I was disappointed to see that
the foods that took up most of my calories were the small processed foods I ate such as
the cake or the chips. Those foods didn’t leave me as full compared to snacks that I ate
that were healthier such as the apples and bananas. It made me feel as though I was
wasting my calories on food that didn’t wasn’t fulfilling.
2. Do you notice any patterns in how you feel?
Since I mostly stay at home, I don’t feel as if I exercise a lot of my calories off
and with online schooling I mostly just sit all day. But I think if I were to be living the
life that I had before the pandemic hit then I don’t think my diet would be sufficient. I
feel this way because I see that there is a lack of fresh fruits in the snack category.
Currently, how I feel is normal but I do think that I need to be adding more fruits and
vegetables to my diet.
3. Did you attempt to cut out any foods? Elaborate
I didn’t attempt to cut out any foods but I did notice that I was eating less because
I knew I was logging the food. Whether it was subconscious or intentional, I did notice
myself reaching for less food but I did notice that my energy levels were the same as
before so I think I was over eating before.
4. What trends are there in your caloric intake? Too much sugar? Enough protein?
For two out of the three days, my caloric intake was under but for one of the days
my caloric intake was over. I think I need to up my protein intake especially in my
breakfast, so I will be adding turkey bacon and adding eggs to my lunch as well. I think
in terms of sugar it is pretty balanced but I will be swapping out the processed sugary
foods with more fruits.
5. How are your energy levels?
Since I don’t do much besides school and work, I feel pretty okay throughout the
day but I do realize that the days where I do work, I tend to take a nap after and I believe
it's because those days I tend to opt out of eating breakfast. Hopefully in the future, I
wake up early enough to eat breakfast before work so that I don’t easily fall asleep and
can be more productive.
6. Do certain meals keep you full longer?
I eat the same lunch everyday consisting of potatoes, bell peppers, and sausage
because its easy to cool and I feel like when I try to venture out to cooking something
different I get discouraged because it seems complicated. I like this meal because it keeps
me full until dinner so I don’t feel the need to stop what I’m doing in order to cook again.
7. How do you feel about your relationship with food?
Growing up my relationship with food was extremely bad, but I think that's just a
part of growing up as a female. Some people tell you that you're too fat and you wonder
why you don’t look like the people in the media and you’re worried about all of this
before you even enter highschool. But in highschool I started marching band and that's
when my relationship with food got better. I was eating more as well as eating healthier
because if I didn’t then I would be completely tired by the end of the day and wouldn’t
have the energy to do homework. Now in college I eat in moderation, I did have a big
weight gain after highschool which severely affected my mental health because I didn’t
want to look at myself and oftentimes didn’t take care of myself. But luckily I was able to
adjust and start going to the gym and eating healthier.
8. What are your food/nutrition goals moving forward?
Moving forward, I want to do more home workouts. Since all the gyms around me
are closed, I found a couple of youtube channels with at home workouts to do that seem
pretty fun. I also hope to cook more for myself and I have a goal to focus more on gut
health by eating certain foods that are recommended such as oatmeal, kimchi, and yogurt.
