The Man Behind the Famous Bee (Jollibee)

1) For EACH of the documentary videos you just have watch, provide your
reflections anchored on the theories of entrepreneurial mind you studied?
What are the real-life lessons can you learn from these documentary videos?

- The life story of Mr. Tony Tan Caktiong taught me that taking risk is the very
first step in becoming a successful entrepreneur. He took risk and invested
their family’s savings to build an ice cream shop which he later incorporated
with selling burgers. This shows how flexible he is in doing business, he didn’t
settle for just an ice cream shop, he kept on formulating another business
ideas and he adjusted and adopted and eventually his business grows and
became what we know today as Jollibee. In doing a business, it is important
for the entrepreneur to know his/her target customers. As what Mr. Caktiong
showed, he knows that the Filipinos like their food sweet and they often smell
it before eating. That is why he incorporated and included it in making our
favorite foods. Change is constant, therefore for us to be able to cope up to
the changes in this world we must have an open mind and heart to accept it
and adopt to it.

2) Do you think these videos can help improve yourself in your specific
endeavors, becoming an entrepreneur/intrapreneur in your respective fields
(e.g., pharmacist, nurse, criminologist, business, psychologist, engineering,
HRM, social work, architecture, educators and among others)?

- As an Engineering student, yes, these videos can help me in my future

endeavors. As you know, Engineering is a very dynamic field of
profession, we need to have a high set of entrepreneurial skills for it is
necessary for us since we need to talk and have an agreement with the
clients. Our clients are often entrepreneurs and businessmen therefore as
an engineer we must know how to immerse ourselves to the professions
that our clients are in. this way, we can communicate and do business
agreements easily and effectively.
3) What do you think why majority of the successful entrepreneurs in the
Philippines are Chinese and not Filipinos?

- For me personally, Chinese are more successful entrepreneurs than

Filipinos mainly because of the mindset. The mindset of Filipinos is that
after they finish their study, they must find a job and support their family
whilst the Chinese mindset is quite different, the Chinese wanted to have
their own business and eagerly makes it to happen. Chinese aims to
become someone that give jobs to people rather than become an
employee.

4) Five years from now, you will graduate from the University of Mindanao. You
have two options; one is to be employed or the other one is to become the
employer? Which path will you take? Explain!

- I am personally aiming to become someone who give jobs to people-

become an employer in other words. However, as an aspiring engineer, I
also wanted to apply or to work for a company, in my early years I wanted
to gain different experiences first. This will serve as my foundation to
become the person I always wanted to be. Immersing myself to the real-
world scenario beforehand is what I think is the most plausible and wise
choice. Experience is the best teacher they say therefore I personally
wanted to experience it first and then observe and learn from it before
venturing on my own.
