Good morning. We are here to present our topic entitled radar – based vehicle awareness system for
approaching motorcycle. For the background of the study, accidents occur each year with an estimated
1.2 million people die due to road accidents. In Philippines, an average of 10, 379 are killed based on
road safety report of world health organization. As you can see, motorcycles account the highest
percentage followed by pedestrians and 4 wheeled drivers. There are compounding number of factors
that cause road accidents. As mentioned in one article, collision occurs when drivers miscalculate the
distance and speed of the approaching vehicle especially on roads where high speeds and blind
bends make it impossible to be sure the road ahead is clear.

Blind spots are areas in adjacent lanes of traffic, the place behind the vehicle, that driver cannot
see through driver’s mirrors. All vehicles have blind spots. And the larger the vehicle, the larger
the blind spot. Relying only on the rear and side mirrors while overtaking or changing lane can
lead to a collision with another vehicle.

So here is the conceptual framework. It includes the principles and processes that are needed to come
up with the desired output. Radar stands for Radio detection and ranging. It uses reflected
electromagnetic energy to detect presence of an object and measure its direction, location, speed
and even the type of object. Pulse compression techniques allow radar system to increase range
resolution and signal to noise ratio. Range resolution is the ability of radar to detect target in
close proximity to each other as a different target. Matched filter is a linear network that
maximizes the output peak-signal to noise ratio of a radar receiver which in turn maximizes the
detect ability of a target. Doppler principle states that the frequency of the return signal is
affected by the speed of moving object. It can directly measure the radial speed of the target
through its doppler frequency which can also distinguish targets as moving or stationary object.
The target is considered as moving object when the reflected signal is different from the one that
was transmitted. Fourier transformation is one of the fundamental methods in signal processing
procedures. And since radar echo contains information in the form of signal, the Fourier
transformation modifies the information into a data format that can be used by the computer –
aided signal processing. This signal processing algorithm can be used to process and analyze the
intermediate frequency echo signal acquired from the target. Target detection algorithm plays an
important role on the detection performance of the radar system by determining whether the
receiver output is an echo from a reflecting target or only noise. It is used to maintain higher
detection rate and lower false alarm rate. Tracking the targets means monitoring the target
movement from one measurement cycle to the next and to estimate the target position of the
moving object at the current timestamp.
