Welcome note
Dear Colleagues,
We have a lot to celebrate! This is our 10th
TAISI conference and what started with 7
schools and a vision to provide educators with
the best intellectual resource platform, has now
grown exponentially to a strength of 70 schools
and a vision that is more progressive than ever!
This year's theme “Making the time, finding the
space” seeks to resonate with all those little
unfulfilled and unexplored areas in our own
spheres of academia. Things that we know
need attention or change and are often ignored.
This, now, is our chance to draw inspiration
from the experts. From encouraging more
creativity in the classroom and scaffolding
leadership roles and from effectively preparing
students for the world beyond to finding the time
and space to make “it” happen, this year's line-
up of speakers seek to energise our institutions
at many different levels.
We hope that, through these sessions, you are
enriched and emboldened to find the time and
make the space for the little bit of magic that will
transform your teaching experience into one
that opens vistas of promise in your students'
minds.

“ About TAISI
The Association of International Schools in India (TAISI) was
founded in 2005. Its primary objective is to create a
platform on which the stakeholders of schools in the region

Conferrals, Gallery Walks, and Congresses:
9:00 - 5:00 Cathy Fosnot Mentoring Young Mathematicians At Work
Venue: Ocean View
Using multiplication as a topic, we will develop a learning trajectory
(Landscape of Learning) characteristic of the big ideas, strategies, and
models children construct as they develop a deep understanding of the
operation. Then, using the trajectory as a lens, we will examine
teachers as they use it to confer and question, support their children to
read and write mathematical arguments, and plan powerful math
congresses where children discuss their work in ways to deepen and
extend the learning of the whole community.
9:00 - 5:00 IBO - Trapti Trivedi ESS (Cat 1)
Venue: Salcete 2
The workshop is designed to prepare participants to teach a specific DP
subject in a manner that supports the IB mission statement and
philosophy. It will focus on developing a holistic learning experience for
students, along with subject specific guide and associated internal and
external learning assessment requirements with practice marking activities
of sample student work.
9:00 - 5:00 Jan Olsen Handwriting Without Tears
Venue: Konkan
This interactive professional development workshop offers effective,
hands-on training that supports the way students (and educators like
you!) learn best. This includes teaching strategies and multisensory
classroom activities that are developmentally appropriate by grade, and
based on the latest research studies and standards.

Venue: Board Room 4
This interactive workshop will engage practitioners in an exploration of the only
coherent school-wide international learning continuum, the Common Ground
Curriculum (CGC). It will then provide an introduction to the way the Common
Ground Collaborative uses its innovative working framework: define, design,
deliver, and demonstrate learning, to support schools in creating a complete and
manageable plan for organizing all aspects of learning at their own school.

9:00 - 5:00 NEASC Chair Training Workshop

Venue: Board Room 4
This workshop is designed for Heads of Schools and Senior
Administrators interested in chairing or co-chairing NEASC
Accreditation Teams (including Preliminary/ Preparatory and 5-Year
Visits) to international schools. Participants are expected to have a
basic familiarity with or understanding of the NEASC 8th Edition to
School Evaluation and Accreditation (Journey to Excellence in
International Education). Previous experience as a member of an
accreditation team is desirable; excellent writing-, communication-, and
collaborative leadership skills are essential.
The workshop includes hands-on practice for prospective leaders of
Visiting Teams and will address the logistical, procedural, and
philosophical aspects of Team Visits. Participants will gain experience
in dealing with different scenarios that may arise during accreditation
visits and in leading teams to arrive at consensual, evidence-based
conclusions. Successful completion of the workshop qualifies
participants to chair or co-chair NEASC Visiting Teams.
The workshop will also introduce participants to NEASC's
groundbreaking new ACE Accreditation protocol, which is being
piloted during the 2015/16 school year.

9:00 - 5:00 Jennifer Abrams Having Hard Conversations

Venue: 1943
As administrators, coaches or colleagues, we often come up against
situations where difficult topics must be addressed. What do we know
about the best strategies for those moments? What questions should
we be asking ourselves before we speak, and what environments are
best for when we do speak?

Participants will learn how to:

 Identify why they hesitate having hard conversations

 Design questions to ask themselves before they choose to speak up

 Articulate in professional language the challenges they are facing

 Determine the goals of the conversation and write an action plan of support

 Script the conversation avoiding trigger words that put others on the defensive

 Choose the best 'wheres' and 'whens' for a productive discussion

for International School Leaders
Venue: 1925
Contrary to conventional wisdom, recent research and practice concur
on school leader strategies that actually DO produce a remarkable effect
on learning. And while there are no silver bullets, ceasing to make
excuses for not doing what we are pretty sure works would be a good
start. Join us for an interactive session as we attempt to cut through the
rhetoric, sidestep the latest buzz-words, challenge some of the obstacles
that have become excuses and practice strategies such as:
 Ensuring a guaranteed and viable curriculum
 Insisting on teacher quality
 Insisting that the 'brutal learning facts' are front and center, and to embed
them in our practice
 Organizing your school around learning, particularly how to face the
decision conundrum of why so few good ones get made and what we can
do about this
 Creating a culture of accountability

Finding Your Space: How to Differentiate Your School

9:00 - 5:00 James MacDonald and Develop Even Better Educational Programs
Venue: Board Room 4
A great school finds the 'right space' in the local educational local
ecosystem by matching organizational strengths and priorities with the
needs of its students. So where is your school's space?
In marketing, business people talk differentiation in terms of identifying
unique and valuable market niches. In education we talk about
differentiation to address the unique needs of students. These concepts, at
the organizational level, are highly correlated and this pre-conference aims
to merge these two sets of ideas. By doing so, one can better define the
core of what your school stands for and also grapple with the most
critical strategic questions any organization can ask: 'What are we not
going to do as well as others?”. There will be ideas and suggestions
about how to communicate clearly around your core messages and
participants will understand how confluence of certain business
principles and educational ideals has the potential to lead to more
effective schools. Questions like 'how can your school differentiate
itself from other educational offerings?' and 'what is the narrative of my
school?' will guide our discussion.
This will be a highly interactive workshop. Participants will have time to
reflect upon current practice, learn from others around them, and hopefully
think differently about their setting and what could be done to further
improve their setting. The day will conclude with participants creating a plan
to translate these ideas and their thinking into tangible follow up.

Developments in CIS School Support: the New Protocol

for CIS International; Accreditation and CIS International
9:00 - 5:00 Graham Ranger
Certification: a Workshop to Train Leaders to Serve on
CIS Visiting Teams in International Accreditation
Venue: Malabar

CIS continues to evolve its school support services to meet the needs
of CIS Member schools, considering changes in international
education, changes in how schools are developing and the
importance of developing students as global citizens. The new
protocol of International Accreditation has been developed after
consultation with CIS Members and is mindful of contemporary
research in both school improvement models and effective evaluation
at school level. Feedback from accreditation visits has highlighted a
number of priorities, including:

 A differentiated model to allow schools to prioritize for the self-

study and peer evaluation process

 A shorter cycle, to align more readily with school strategic planning

time-lines

 A more central focus on four drivers: the school's purpose and

direction; intercultural learning; students' learning; and students'
welfare and well-being

 A web-based system allowing for reports, compliances, evidence

to be uploaded at any time to suit the school, shifting the focus of
the self-study away from a high-stakes intense period leading up
to the visit to one where evidence is uploaded at any time

 A shift in reports focus, away from compliances to development

and to students' learning and those factors which impinge most
directly upon students' learning

 Consequently, a move to the use of development continua,

allowing schools to identify their next steps and priorities in any
area, rather than merely showing alignment to a standard

CIS International Certification is a new service on offer to all CIS

Members, following a successful pilot phase of development. CIS
provides a framework, planning resources and learning opportunities
to aid schools in completing the International Certification activities.
Centred around project-based learning, schools take action to
demonstrate how they develop global citizenship, completing a
number of projects with their community while reflecting on the
experiences and outcomes.

Schools completing International Certification will complete a series

of globally-focused projects and exhibitions. For each project, CIS
provides the project objective, expected outcomes and guiding
questions for assessing students' growth. A rubric is also provided
that will be the tool used to evaluate the final project outcomes. The
school has flexibility to define and complete the project in a way that
makes sense for their community. CIS Advisors work with the school
throughout the process to evaluate the project outcomes and provide
guidance to support the school in its pursuit of certification. We will
use examples of projects, drawn from the pilot programme.

GL Education
A trusted provider of assessments worldwide

International schools in India have a series of requirements from the

assessments they use. Rigorous tests of attainment that provide evidence of
progress to parents are key. So too are assessments that can provide a measure
of effectiveness of teaching and learning, as well as those that can give a wider
view of a student’s ability.

Our assessments are used and trusted by teachers in international, state and
private schools across the globe. As more schools adopt digital tests we have
now delivered, in the UK alone, over 7 million digital assessments. Internationally
we work closely with associations such as FOBISIA, BSME, ECIS, EARCOS and
COBIS to cater to the specific needs of international schools in a wide range of
countries and circumstances.

However, we believe that our customers are not only buying assessments but
are also buying into a methodology. We aim to support and engage with all of our
customers, to ensure that they and their students get the most from our
assessments.

In India specifically, we aim to have real time contact with our customers, and
offer a variety of support. This includes one-to-one webexes, webinars, account
management visits and regional seminars. This September (2015), for example,
we will be running seminars in Pune, Mumbai, Lucknow, Bangalore and Delhi.

This all-inclusive approach to supporting our assessments can also be found in

the holistic, ‘Whole Pupil’ approach to assessment we encourage schools to use.
The best way to raise attainment and results is to take a wide ranging approach
to assessing a student’s education. By using our assessments to look at ability
and attitude, as well as attainment, and combining that with teachers’ individual
judgement, a school can build a more complete picture of every child. This allows
for a highly personalised education, effective teaching and learning and the
fulfilment of every child’s potential.

With our combination of experience, expert partners and international

knowledge, GL Education can help international schools across India to raise
attainment and deliver better outcomes for all their students.

We believe that anyone involved in the teaching, mentoring or

supervision of young people is in a key leadership role, whether they
are currently aware of that or not.

Henry V is the story of a leader who unites his people around a

common goal, overcoming many obstacles in his path on his way to
achieving a remarkable victory against significant odds.

School leaders and teachers need to be visible. They need to

communicate vision and purpose in a way that inspires their teams
and truly reflects their passion and commitment with authenticity.

Participants will be introduced to the story of Shakespeare's most

inspired and inspiring leader, Henry V. They then choose the
leadership challenges they wish to explore. These are typically drawn
from the following:

ACT 1 - Assessing the Past and Visioning the Future

• Building consent - uniting disparate people around a common goal.

 Distinguishing Mission and Vision - what do we want to do and why do we

want to do it?

 How to sell a Vision - authentic performance in presentations.

ACT 2 - Identifying internal resources

 Interactive session to identify own leadership style

Big data, its collection and its use is a topic of much debate, with
most articles implying that data is cold and completely impersonal.
Hardly terms that you would use to describe any school where the
success of each and every individual students is rooted in your
DNA. For schools to be effective and efficient accurate and relevant
data is a must and when the right practices and solutions are
embedded within a school, data shouldn’t be feared. Quick effective
data collection and its use can promote a step change in school
efficiency and student outcomes.

In this session Julie will offer the audience some useful insight on
how you can create a data friendly school.

Andrew Derry Venue: Salcete 1

We are probably in the biggest paradigm shift in education since the

beginning of compulsory education for all. The international education
community continues to take a leading role in exploring the purpose of
education and schools of the future.
How do we plan for that? While this may mean a huge change for
many of our colleagues, it is an even bigger paradigm shift for our
parents and communities.
How do we get buy-in and support from our community? How do we
plan for that?

Schools of the future have a duty to fully prepare their students for the
reality of their future, yet at the same time face the pragmatic reality of
external exams, standardized tests and university admissions. How do
we plan for that? Arguably, we are in the most exciting, yet challenging
time for education. How do we strategically plan to become modern,
constructivist, inquiry-based, tech-rich centres of learning that our
entire community buys in to?
This session will start with a case study of how one such school has
taken a whole-community approach for planning to be a School of the
Future, and then provide an opportunity for school leaders to share
and discuss approaches that have worked well in their setting. Leaders
are encouraged to come with examples of good practice to share.

An educational leader’s work is emotionally and psychologically

demanding. One’s ability to be both intra-personally and inter-
personally intelligent is essential for meeting the challenges of the day-
to-day work and achieving the academic and organizational outcomes
of a school district. This workshop will assist leaders at all levels in
developing their self-awareness and interpersonal skill set so they are
even better able to deal with the complex needs of their department or
school, and will provide workshop participants with strategies and
resources to help those they manage and support to do the same.

Nikki Woodson Venue: Konkan

Accountability and mandates have forced leaders in a corner where

primary time is spent on data analysis, reporting and compliance
monitoring. While accountability is important, leaders can take a
hands-on approach to leadership in schools that will allow valuable
insight in the education system of the school. This session will show
participants’ first-hand how their leadership can take on a more
hands-on approach to be a creative, inspirational and transformative
leader.

Making It Happen: Finding the Time and Space

1:30 - 3:00 Breakaway 5 (and Money and People and...)
Rick Spradling
Venue: Malabar

What needs to happen at your school to enhance student learning?

How can you get around roadblocks? In this breakout session,
participants will first identify several shared difficulties such as use of
time, appropriate space, and effective communication. Then we will
exchange successful practices and experiences. I will share what I
have learned from the numerous mistakes I have made. Note: a
degree in rocket science is not needed for success in this workshop.
This session is intended for administrators (directors, principals, vice-
principals, curriculum directors, business managers, etc.), trustees,
and teachers.

3:30 - 5:00 Breakaway 1 The 'To Don't' List for International School Leaders
Bambi Betts Venue: Salcete 1

How well you know the scenario. Your ‘TO DO’ list grows daily. And
with every conference, every new book, every blog post, the list
grows…and you feel guiltier and guiltier and more and more worried
that somehow the kids in your charge are going to miss out and it will
be on your watch.

Join us for a rapid journey through the TO DON’T list - 5-6 practices
that never really worked, that have ceased to work given new
contexts, or are so low impact on learning that they are just not worth
doing. Things like: protracted teacher evaluation schemes with 10
page rubrics; one size fits all homework; putting every faculty
member on a team just because everyone else is on a team;
analysing data without targets, etc.

3:30 - 5:00 Breakaway 2 Developing School Leaders to Transform Schooling

Allie Clemans Venue: Salcete 1

This session looks at the approaches taken to developing school

through the examination of a principal preparation program
conducted in an Australian context. Through discussion of the
research-based underpinnings of the program and its context, three
aspects emerge as important and have been seen to have had an
impact on the development of those who aspire to lead in schools,
namely, i) leaders’ use of evidence, ii) their recognition of adult
learning approaches with colleagues and iii) the way the role of
leader is conceptualised. In this workshop, participants will discuss
the relevance of these ideas for leading in their school context.

3:30 - 5:00 Breakaway 3 The Grass is Greener Where You Water It

Deidre Fischer Venue: Malabar

This session will be more about leadership than gardening, but I hope
you like the analogy! The question I would like to explore is this: as
leaders in schools, what are we doing to identify and nurture
leadership potential within our own staff?

I learned about leadership ‘on the job’ and made a lot of mistakes
along the way, and I believe I did learn from each and every one of
them! As heads of schools, Principals and others (former Heads of
Schools turned consultants, etc.), I believe that we have a
responsibility towards aspiring leaders in our schools, and an
obligation to provide opportunities to support their goals. In addition, I
believe that it is the right thing to do, and it makes economic sense to
facilitate access and foster diversity to maximize the potential we

3:30 - 5:00 Breakaway 4 Harnessing the Potential of the NEW MYP

Ashish Trivedi Venue: Konkan

Balancing the pursuit of meeting the 21st century learning needs of

students and at the same time managing parents’ expectations of a
school’s curriculum can be challenging. An added layer of challenge
for schools is their aspiration to provide students a coherent learning
experience as they move through primary, middle and secondary
education.

This session will focus on the recent curriculum and assessment

developments in the MYP and how these developments enable
schools in effectively meeting the learning needs of their students as
well as the expectations of the wider school community. The session
will also provide the participants an opportunity to discuss how the
new MYP can help in building a coherent K-12 curriculum. This
session is best suited to school heads, coordinators and teachers

This session is a social cognitive approach to socio-economic class

and examines the relationship between available resources, the
demands of the external environment and the knowledge
base/relationships that an individual has. These three things form a
"mindset" about how to negotiate life and the extent to which there is
enough stability to focus on being educated. Educators are asked to
change thinking, understandings, and knowledge bases of
individuals. It is important to know the thinking and resources of the
students as it relates to learning.

10:30 - 11:30 Keynote The Learning Building: Designing Smart, Agile

Schools for Smart, Agile Kids
Prakash Nair
Venue: Ballroom

Schools must be shaped not only by the architects who designed

them, but also by the teachers and students who occupy them. In
other words, we need to move away from the rigidity of the static
building to the agility of the Learning Building. A well-designed school
building will be ever-changing to accommodate the learning that is
going on at any given time. However, a majority of the learning that
happens in most schools is pre-determined by a design best suited
for an industrial, mass-production model. In short, “school hardware”
severely limits the “educational software” it can run.

This presentation will go beyond strategies to modify the defunct

hardware of the school building. It will also show how the obsolete
physical shape of schools points to a far more troubling reality that
education itself has become obsolete. Thus, by reshaping schools to
represent true Learning Buildings, we will also have an opportunity to
physically manifest new and more powerful philosophies of learning.
Showcasing both national and international case studies in the
context of delivering a systemic redesign of education itself, this
presentation will provide specific and immediately usable ideas to
improve learning and the learning environment for all students.

feel safe and welcome? What can teachers do to create an
environment in which students feel supported, capable and
competent? Based on Steele and Cohn-Vargas, Dweck and
Seligman, participants will study the concepts of stereotype threat,
identity safety, growth mindset and learned optimism and leave with a
set of behaviours that are within the educator’s sphere of influence in
order to increase identity safety for all students.

design our organization of space, time and people in support of these
key conceptual drivers. We’ll work together on the principles
themselves and then see what life and learning can look like when
daily realities like our curriculum, school buildings, furniture, and
human resource deployment look like when seen afresh through a

1:30 - 3:00 Breakaway 5 School Systems Can Prevent Bullying Behavior

Marlene Snyder Venue: Malabar

Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior among school-aged

children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The
behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time.
Bullying includes actions such as making threats, spreading rumours,
attacking someone physically or verbally and excluding someone
from a group on purpose. Bullying may also be defined as “peer
abuse.”

Bullying can threaten students’ physical and emotional safety at

school and negatively impact their ability to learn. There are a
number of things school administrators, educators and staff can do to
make their school environment safer and more welcoming for
everyone.

This interactive session will outline the components of bullying

prevention at the school-wide, classroom, individual and community
levels. It will focus on assessment of problems as well as practical
strategies for both prevention and intervention. In India, Miri Piri
Academy, Amritsar, has recently trained teachers and staff about
practical strategies to prevent and intervene in bullying behaviours.
There will be a question and answer/ discussion period at the end of
this session.

1:30 - 3:00 Breakaway 6 Accreditation for Transformation: NEASC’s ACE

Peter Mott Venue: Ocean View

ACE Accreditation, NEASC’s radically new approach to accreditation,

focuses squarely on ‘learning’ – what good learning should look like
and what its expected impact on the learner should be. The ACE
acronym represents Learning Architecture, Culture, and Ecology, and
its ten Learning Principles – supported by five Foundational
Standards – reflect an interdependent and interrelated learning
ecosystem. ACE shifts the focus from inputs and outputs to learner
impacts and proposes a strength-based rather than deficit-oriented
(‘meets/does not meet the Standard’) model. In fact, ACE aims to
change the language and ‘grammar’ of schooling and accreditation.

ACE has now entered the ‘trail-blazing’ phase, with some six
international schools participating in field-testing the beta version of
the new protocol. ACE is expected to become fully operational in
2016/17. This session will:

 Review ACE’s substantial conceptual changes and how these will

affect schools preparing for accreditation;

 Comment on the significantly upgraded training requirements for

ACE accreditation team visitors;

 Outline the process through which schools may earn ACE

accreditation;

 Describe how schools can switch from the 8th Edition

Accreditation protocol to ACE; and

 Discuss implications for joint/synchronized ACE accreditation

processes with other agencies.

which are different? What role, if any, does blended learning have in
helping our students to acquire these key skills? Is blended learning
here to stay or is it just a passing education trend?

This challenging session will be led by Ed Lawless, Principal at

3:30 - 5:00 Breakaway 5 Educational Survival & Relevance in the 21st Century
Craig Johnson Venue: Malabar

Schools are not doing what needs to be done to educate the children
of today for the world of tomorrow. In fact, schools are failing
miserably. That’s the irrefutable truth. Every country and educational
system is looking for a solution, and very few are finding scalable or
sustainable ones. So, what are schools to do? Well, there’s a famous
saying that states, “If you want something done right, do it yourself.”
This maxim is spot-on, when it comes to the survival of schools in the
21st Century. Schools can no longer wait for external entities such as
the government or teacher-training programs to respond to this crisis.
No, schools must become the architects of their own evolution and
return to relevance. So, why aren’t schools responding faster and
more strategically to this emergency? Simply put: Schools just don’t
know how. And 'perceived' insurmountable obstacles such as
expertise, money, time, and space thwart any attempt at envisioning
solutions. But these ‘obstacles’ are illusions—nothing more than
ghosts—and each of them easily overcome. This workshop, built on
the work of Daniel Pink and Malcolm Gladwell, will provide
participants the necessary direction, structures, and a framework to
return their schools to a state of relevance.

21st Century
Rod Fraser
Venue: Ocean View

Our role as educators is to prepare young people for our fast-paced,

digital-savvy, multi-tasking world. It is a role in which logic suggests
that the traditional approaches to education will not succeed in
developing lifelong learners of the future.

As educators we are playing ‘catch-up’ and the School environment

alone does not have the time or space to complete the task.

There is tension in a pressured timetable between academic and

non-academic pursuits.

The session will explore a Round Square approach to this challenge,

which embraces both academic and non-academic endeavour,
providing a holistic educational approach. It will also challenge the
way we can engage the wider School community as learners.

The Round Square approach is to develop 21st Century Explorers,

focussing on the development of skills for the workplace, responsible
citizenship and global interaction.

11:30 - 12:30 Keynote Educating for a Global World: To do Well or to do Good?

Boyd Roberts Venue: Ballroom

International schools are a result of a global world – with its multi-

national corporations, increasing population, climate change,
declining biodiversity and global communications. This session
highlights some of the challenges, particularly for international
schools, of educating students in that changing global world. We want
to ensure they are prepared to do well. But what are our
responsibilities to society and the wider world? Should we also be
working with them to do good?

We shall consider different types of engagement with the wider world,

and concepts such as international mindedness, global citizenship,
and education for a better world. Focusing on the world of
international schools and international curriculum agencies we shall
look at some key points that should inform our thinking and practice
in our work with young people - in and out of the classroom - to
shape a better curriculum for a better global world.

The second part of the session will look at how school leaders can
find the time and make the space to address some of the challenges
raised, and sets the scene for the subsequent breakaway on the
International Global Citizen’s Award.

which is integrated into the everyday life of the school and the
teacher is likely to have a more lasting impact on practice and on
student outcomes. Schools and school leaders need to focus clearly
on selecting and engaging with appropriate professional development
opportunities for their staff and on creating a safe, supportive
environment that encourages a collaborative approach to learning.

In this interactive session, we will be exploring the principles of

effective professional development. We will look at communities of
practice and consider options for bringing teachers together in a
school in a well-planned programme of study. We will use as our
reference the suite of Cambridge Professional Development
Qualifications, which are quality assured and recognised by the
University College London Institute of Education on the pathway to a
range of master’s courses.

1:30 - 3:00 Breakaway 5 Teacher Self-Supervision: Why Teacher Evaluation

is a Failed System and What We Can Do About It
Bill and Ochan
Powell Venue: Malabar

Over the course of the last thirty years, the workshop presenters
have worked with thousands of teachers and school leaders in over
fifty countries worldwide and the refrain has been virtually
unanimous: traditional teacher evaluation is a failed system. It
doesn’t improve student learning; it is immensely time and energy
consuming; and it destroys the culture of trust in schools.

Try a rough-and-ready thought experiment: stand in front of a group

of 1000 teachers and ask how many of them are becoming more
professional, effective or fulfilled through the use of the present
system of teacher evaluation. Our hunch is that virtually no one will
say “yes.” We have a failed system that isn’t working and we need to
change it.

Essential Questions:

 Why doesn’t teacher evaluation work? What are some of the

self-defeating assumptions that underpin the process?

has supervisory responsibility.

1:30 - 3:00 Breakaway 6 The UWC Mahindra College Project Based Diploma:
Engaging with Complexity in the 21st century
Cary Reid
Venue: Ocean View

The world in which our students will live tomorrow is radically different
from the one in which we as educators grew up. Students and the
ways in which that learn have also changed. Recognizing that
students have changed and the world has changed requires us to
think about how we teach and think about how we can continue to
connect with learners.

In 2015, UWC Mahindra College is redesigning high school education

with a focus on project-based learning, experiential education and
outdoor learning.

UWC Mahindra College Project-Based Diploma is a high school

program designed around independent, student-driven, professionally
guided, multi-disciplinary, projects. This process is focused around a
rigorous academic program, through which students will develop the
skills and competencies needed to excel in the 21st century.

The target audience for this session is high school educators, who
prepare students for life, and university educators, who receive these
students.

3:30 - 5:00 Breakaway 1 Nudge: How to Socialize Ideas and Move Your School
Forward Without Bossing People Around
James Macdonald
Venue: Salcete 1

There has been a lot written about leadership over the years and we
have many preconceived notions about what makes leaders effective.
On the one hand we have the image of army general, barking orders
to subordinates. On the other extreme, there is talk of ‘leading from
behind’ and ‘servant leadership’. One thing is certain: schools are
highly social environments and school leaders must be very savvy in
understanding social dynamics if they are to be highly effective. This
interactive session is meant to trigger thinking around the concepts of
‘soft HR ‘ versus ‘hard HR,’ and provoke thinking about how we as
school leaders need to understand various psychological concepts
like confirmation biases, psychological anchoring and the sunk cost
fallacy. It is virtually guaranteed that there will be much more talk
about on these topics than time will allow, but that is the whole point
of the session! We will open a discussion about the effect of
leadership on the social dynamics of school and this, in turn, can only
make use more effective leaders.

Becoming Committed Global Citizens Now! - Through

3:30 - 5:00 Breakaway 2
the International Global Citizen’s Award Program
Boyd Roberts
and Pathma Naidu Venue: Salcete 2

“The IGC Award is not just another award; it’s a way of life.”
Pancham Yadav,Gr.11, P.W.S.

The IGC Award is a non-competitive program supporting individual

students to become better global citizens. Focused on the everyday
lives of young people in a global world, it incorporates existing work
in schools as well as requiring something new. The program structure
and examples of how it is being implemented in schools
internationally will be outlined.

Schools share perspectives and experience with member schools

internationally, and thereby develop their own understanding and
practice in guiding students to become effective global citizens.

We shall draw in particular on experience at Pathways World School

(PWS) in India. PWS introduced the IGC Award through the Well-
Being Program in School, in 2012 and it has been a secondary
school-wide program since August 2013. Since the IGC Award
program is for students between 11 and 18 years of age, PWS has
designed special preparatory programs for Primary School and for
Early Learners. Through these experiential programs, students have
continued to grow and develop into committed global citizens.

Of interest to those working with students of all ages, there will be

ample opportunities for questions.

(International Teacher Education for Primary Schools)
Peter Elting
Venue: Salcete 3

This session consists of a presentation about ITEPS and an

interactive part. ITEPS is a teacher education course at the bachelor
level, which started in 2012 and trains students to be teachers in
international primary schools. The programme is offered by a
consortium of three universities: University College Zealand
(Denmark), Buskerud and Vestfold University College (Norway) and
Stenden University (The Netherlands). Some characteristics of the
programme are: managing the multicultural classroom, study of the
various and varied curricula (national and international), global
citizenship and teaching practice. The intercultural competency is
integrated in every subject and the overall level of the course is high.
The official language of the course is English. After Year 1 of the
course the minimum level of English must be C1 (CAE) for the
student to be allowed to continue. Most students have level C2 (CPE)
– which students need to achieve before graduation. It is compulsory
for students to complete some of their teaching practice and study
abroad. During the ITEPS programme, students will develop the
following competencies: intercultural, interpersonal, pedagogical,
subject knowledge and methodological, and organisational, as well
as the competencies of collaboration with colleagues and with the
working environment and reflection and development. In this
presentation a more detailed overview will be provided into the
implementation and first experiences of the ITEPS programme.
Sanne Pfefferkorn, a Year 2 ITEps student, will inform you about her
experiences in Year 1.

This session is intended for directors of international schools and

other officials of international schools who are in charge of the
application process for new teachers.

Growing Talent: Great Leaders Support Great

3:30 - 5:00 Breakaway 4
Teachers Doing Great Things
Henry Nicols
and Susan Baum Venue: Konkan

We are learning more and more about the power of strength based
environments to transform and move organizations forward. Four
critical things are necessary to develop a strength based
organization. 1. Identify individual differences, 2. Celebrate diversity.
3. Support those who think and understand differently, and 4. Create
pathways to leadership that align with personality styles. In this
session you will be given tools to assess your own personality style
and to understand the profiles of those around you. You will learn
how to use style strengths to support change, be a better
communicator and enhance cooperation. When we recognize and
value the talents we each bring to the learning environment, great
things happen.

3:30 - 5:00 Breakaway 5 Leading the Maker Movement

Eric Sheninger Venue: Malabar

The maker movement in schools focuses on the natural learning

curiosity of students where they tinker, invent, create, and make to
learn. Makerspaces in schools tap into student passions and combine
that with open source learning, contemporary design and powerful
personal technology like 3D printers. This session will walk attendees
through the creation of engaging makerspaces in any K12 school and
the foundational elements that can be purchased within any school
budget. During a workshop attendees will participate in a hands-on
maker activity.

3:30 - 5:00 Breakaway 6 Expand Time as You Drop Into the Spaciousness
Within You
Corry Macdonald
Venue: Ocean View

Come and explore art making as you have never experienced it

before. In fact, having no artistic experience will stead you well in this
session as you tap into your purest expression. Not only is this
session highly enjoyable and relaxing, it also is wonderful opportunity
to play with time and space. Using very simple art materials, I will
guide you within to discover parts of yourself rarely accessed in our
busy world where the verbal-linear brain is utilized most of the time.

You will come to know experientially how to open up a spaciousness

within yourself as you create from your non-linear brain and your
unique inner rhythm. By tapping into your feelings and responding to
inner impulses and preferences, you will come to expand your view of
yourself both in the process of creating and afterwards as you take in
and reflect upon your artwork.

The art holds much information and intelligence for you. I will teach
you how to access this as well. Through it all, as you enter a state of
flow, your sense of time will also shift and expand. This is a wonderful
side effect which creativity brings. As you are fully immersed in a
feeling of energized focus, full engagement, and enjoyment in the
process of creative activity time will open up and expand resulting in
an even greater sense of spaciousness for you.

When students choose Monash they don’t just join a university, they join a global community.
We bring together students from more than 100 countries across our campuses, creating a
diverse and culturally vibrant atmosphere. Monash has an international network of more than
290,000 graduates with five Australian campuses, a campus in Malaysia, a Joint Graduate
School in China, a learning centre in Italy and a vast network of partners across the world. This
means our students benefit from global perspectives in any area they choose to study.

We are renowned for our excellence in teaching as well as our transformative research. From
our 1968 research that lead to the world’s first law requiring seatbelts in all cars, to pioneering
in-vitro fertilisation, to prototyping microchips that will power a direct-to-brain bionic eye
implant, to creating an energy storage system that outperforms lithium-ion batteries – Monash
research has made a profound influence in the world and will continue to do so well into the
future.

Monash has also established a research centre in India, partnering with the Indian Institute of
Technology, Bombay. The IITB-Monash Research Academy is a unique global research
partnership that focuses on collaborative, multi-disciplinary projects in thematic areas of
strategic importance to industry and to Australian and Indian society. The research delivers
innovative and high impact solutions to many of the leading research issues in the world today
from climate change and renewable energy to clean water, advanced engineering and
biotechnology.

Not only do we universally excel in our research, Monash has earned its reputation by leading
the way in all areas of study. For instance, our Faculty of Law hosts the largest debating
society in the Southern Hemisphere and we are widely regarded as one of the best debating
universities in the world. We were the first university to ever win back-to-back World
championships, defeating teams including Oxford, Stanford and the University of Sydney –
along with upholding an esteemed record of having won 9 Australs and 5 Worlds since 1990,
more than any other University during that time. The Monash Association of Debaters’ 500+
members include the current and former World and Australasian Champions.

To further solidify our reputation for excellence and international reach, Monash University is
very proud to be associated with The Association of International Schools of India 2015 annual
conference. These conferences are imperative in maintaining the focus on professional
development for teachers, leadership building for heads, and skills building for students – with
the progression of international education at the core of everything.

Though collaboration, we aim to inspire and lead the future of education and research.

How well do we prepare our students for the world beyond school; for
the challenges of competing for a university place or a job?

Do we give them adequate opportunity to see themselves as others

see them, to know their strengths and limitations, to present
themselves in the best possible way, to make choices that play to
their strengths, to understand what future employers may demand of
them?

In this session the materials and strategies for regular higher

education/career-based workshops are presented to promote:

Self-Analysis – what am I good at, what do I enjoy, what skills do I

have, what limitations, myself as others see me?

Effective CV writing, effective personal statement writing.

Studying abroad – the whys and hows of going to university abroad.

Enhancing Employability. What are employers looking for and how do

I match up?

potentially lead to. It helps students understand their strengths and

how to implement it. Students also develop the competencies to
write a unique personal statement, develop their resume, acquire
work exposure and other 21st century skills, become self-motivated,
self-reliant and better prepared for the transition to tertiary education
and beyond. This also maximises counsellor effectiveness and

Science, In recent years Japanese universities have been actively looking to
Technology recruit more international students by putting on more English-based
Agency programs and offering generous scholarships. This session will
introduce the opportunities to earn a Bachelor's Degree in English at
Priyanka Bangia Ritsumeikan University (RU), one of Japan's top private universities.
and Hiroshi RU was founded in 1900 and has 35,000 students and boasts 13
Yoshino colleges and 19 graduate schools across four campuses. The
University was selected in 2014 for the highly competitive “Top Global
University Project” by the Japanese Government to lead the
internationalization within higher education in Japan, and currently
offers two English-medium undergraduate programs.

Since the establishment of The University of Tokyo India Office

(Bangalore) in 2012, the number of Indian students studying at
UTokyo increased from 29 to 68 (2015). However, the number of
Indian students in Japan (727 plus) is still very low compared to other
countries; China (94,399), Korea (15,777), and Nepal (10,448).
Recently, more Japanese universities, including UTokyo, began
implementing a more active student recruitment in India to encourage
young stars to continue their higher education in Japan, seeing India
as an important market with outstanding talents in various fields such
as mathematics and engineering. UTokyo promotes India-Japan
academic collaboration both at faculty and student level. Today, we
will share some recent achievements (e.g. two engineers from the
Ministry of Railway who enrolled in a Master’s program of the
Graduate School of Engineering and two SUPER30 students who will
enroll in our undergraduate programs). We will also introduce
UTokyo’s English undergraduate programs: PEAK.
