Other Zen 3
Architectural Updates
Besides the reworked L3 and CCX, Zen 3 offers
numerous smaller changes. Overall, AMD claims a 19
percent improvement in IPC. A big chunk of that
comes from the L3 cache, but it still means a 4GHz
Zen 3 chip will generally perform as well as a
4.75GHz Zen 2 chip – or that a 4.4GHz Zen 3 CPU
would be the equivalent of a 5.25GHz Zen 2 chip,
which of course never existed.
Zen 3 CPUs also have 24 percent better power
efficiency compared to Zen 2 running at the same
clocks. Improvements to TSMC manufacturing help to
boost clock speeds a bit, so TDP isn’t lower. The L3
cache design also contributes to the lower power
use, since a reduction in signaling traffic over the
Infinity Fabric will cut power use. Combined with
TSMC’s improvements in its manufacturing, the net
result are higher clock speeds.
That’s about it as far as architectural changes go.
AMD hasn’t revealed all of the details, but the biggest
change will be the move to a unified L3 cache and
eight-core CCX. Even the compute chiplets haven’t
significantly changed in size. The Zen 2 compute
chiplets were about 74mm square, and the new Zen
3 compute chiplets are at most 80mm square. That’s
not too surprising, as the dual-compute chiplet plus
cIO chiplet form factor precludes using anything
significantly larger for the die size.

With memory prices falling significantly over the last couple
of years, 8GB should be considered the new baseline for any
system. If you’re looking to do anything more demanding
than bog-standard office tasks, such as gaming or video
editing, 16GB will often be a better option. Higher speeds of
DDR4 RAM are also becoming the norm, with 2,400MHz kits
costing fairly similar to their speedier contemporaries. As
such, we’ve chosen a simple dual-channel 8GB kit at 3,000Hz
from HyperX, which should be plenty for the sort of work
this system is designed to do. Upgrading the memory later
on is always an option, of course.

We have a confession to
make: The Lancool II wasn’t
our first-choice case for
this build. When time

make quick decisions to get
our builds out to your

might’ve been able to figure
this out from our choice of

chunky ATX mid-tower
rather than the more
compact mATX case we
were hoping to secure. It’s
still an excellent choice, with
a durable metal and glass
construction and plenty of

Make it cheaper
We went a bit over budget for this build, but
don’t worry, there are always ways to trim
down the price on any custom-built PC.
Our first target here would be the case. As we mentioned
earlier, the Lancool II – while great – wasn’t our initial choice. A
budget mATX case from the likes of Cooler Master or Corsair,
without any RGB lighting or tempered glass, shouldn’t cost
more than $100. Sure, it won’t look as nice as the PC we’ve built
here, but if it’s going to be hidden beneath a desk then it hardly
matters.
Cutting back on our cooling solution is also an option here, as
the Corsair A500 is a relatively expensive air cooler. Using the
stock Intel cooler that comes with your processor is always an
option, although plenty of budget aftermarket coolers are
available for between $40-$80, and these will almost certainly
03 MEMORY MOUNTING
RAM installation shouldn’t be too complicated. There are two
sticks but four DIMM slots. Thankfully, the motherboard has labels

04 DOUBLE TROUBLE
Since this twin-fan offering from Corsair can be used
with different CPU sockets, it comes with its own proprietary
mounting solution. Open up the Intel 115x plastic bag for the
parts. Fit the large bracket to the underside of the motherboard,
so it lines up with the four holes around the CPU. Screw in the
four 115x standoffs, then fit the two mounting brackets to those
using the provided thumbscrews. Remove the pop-off top panel
of the cooler block and free the two fan power cables, then fit
the cooler over the CPU (mind your fingers on the thermal paste),
and secure the two sprung screws using the included long
screwdriver. Replace the top panel, and plug the cables into the
CPU_FAN and CPU_OPT headers on the board. The Cooler Master N200 doesn’t look like much, but it’s a
straightforward and effective PC case for just $80.

both be a good fit, for around $250.
If you’re not looking for improved graphical oomph, you
may want to investigate the potential of a more powerful

Elsewhere, there are more straightforward upgrades that
