Foreword
Hypnotherapy has been used in dental practice since
the 19th century. It was used then in the form of
hypnoanalgesia during surgical dental intervention. The
first tooth extraction with the use of hypnoanalgesia was
performed by Jean Victor Dudet in 1830.

Since then, hypnotherapists have made powerful


strides toward changing public perception about hypnosis.
Doctors continue to use hypnosis to calm their patients,
and to ease pain during procedures (Bierman, 1995). They
regularly tell patients how easy recovery will be.
Additionally, doctors tell patients that a procedure is
common and meets with a high degree of success.
Because these phrases are delivered by an authority
figure, they act in exactly the same way as hypnotic
suggestions, and become reality for the patient. More
obvious hypnotic suggestions are also sometimes given to
patients by doctors trained in hypnosis, and for over a
century, dentists have used hypnosis to ease discomfort
during dental procedures.

In addition to using hypnotic techniques themselves,


doctors and dentists regularly refer patients to
hypnotherapists for help with weight loss, smoking
cessation, and overcoming fears about dental and surgical
procedures. Before the 1950s, the medical profession
scoffed at hypnotherapy, but today it is being readily
embraced as a complement to long-standing medical
procedures.

According to the southern Medical Journal (2004), as


many as 40% of Americans use some form of
complementary and alternative medicine such as
hypnotherapy. At no other time has the world of
hypnotherapy been as wide open with exciting possibilities
as it is now. Because more and more people are exploring
and accepting the benefits of hypnotherapy, a much

greater need for qualified hypnotherapists to open


practices now exists. The goal of this book is to give you, a
potential or practicing hypnotherapist, a strong base for
building your practice. You will be guided through a basic
hypnotherapy session, and you will be given homework
opportunities to use and modify your techniques so that
you can help others lose weight, find love, and increase
their financial success, among other issues.

What is a Script?

Perhaps the most important part of any hypnosis


experience is the script.

What is a script? A script is the meat of the hypnosis


experience. It is where the therapy occurs. If you do not
have a script, you are not doing hypnotherapy. You may
be hypnotizing your client, but you are not helping anyone.
A script is the portion of the hypnosis session during which
you suggest change. It delivers the main message to the
subconscious mind. The pretalk, induction and deepening
were all to prepare the client for the script.

A script can be on anything: attracting romantic partners,


improving efficiency for increased financial success,
weight loss, memory improvement, smoking cessation,
improved confidence, or whatever the client’s challenge
may be.

As part of a self-hypnotherapy session, a hypnotherapist


could even write a script to enhance her creativity—to
suggest to her subconscious mind that she is going to
write more creative scripts.

The script is where you form new associations for the


client. Instead of being afraid, the client will associate a
pleasant feeling with talking to members of the opposite
sex, eating health foods, going down an escalator, down
an elevator, into a crowd of people, up on a stage, in an
airplane, near a snake.

I have a prospective client who is afraid of entering parking


garages. During the script, she will be given a new
association for entering a parking garage, and she will no
longer be afraid. Her old association, the one she has now,
is scary for her. The script will plant positive suggestions

that her body will remember in the future when she


actually enters a parking garage.

If you are new to hypnotherapy, you might want to start


with a script written by someone else. You can borrow one
of my scripts, or a script from one of the countless books
available on this topic (see chapter’s end for
recommended resources).

When using a script that someone else has written, make


sure that you have read through it before the hypnosis
session. The worst thing you can possibly do is go into a
session without previously having read through the script.

You want to be familiar with the script for several reasons.


First of all, you do not want to trip through words and
concepts while reading the script during the session.
(Because your client’s eyes are covered, you can read a
script during a session. You do not have to memorize it.)
Second of all, you need to evaluate the script prior to
reading it to your client. Each client is different, so you will
need to find and eliminate those things in the script that
are not going to apply to the particular client for whom the
script is being used. You need to have a full understanding
of the script so that you can tailor it to reach the best
possible results.

Do your due diligence. Do not allow yourself any excuses.


Prepare every time.

Beware of procrastinating and ending up in a situation that


causes you to stumble. You can get lazy. You can get into
a rut. During a live sermon, the preacher can say, “I am
sorry. I made a mistake. Let me backtrack.” You cannot do
that under hypnosis. Every word you say goes into the
patient’s subconscious mind.

Be prepared. You are dealing with the most precious part


of a human: His mind. Treat it delicately.

I do not say this to scare you. I say this to prepare you.

Be prepared.

Consider a script for weight loss that begins like this:


Now, you will imagine that you are a machine and you can
put different types of batteries in your power center. You
have been choosing batteries which do not last long and
leave a residue. From now on, you will chose proper
batteries which power you for a long time and do not leave
a residue.

Let’s say that you are not interested or inspired by the


machine analogy used in the script. Also, your client is not
interested in machines at all. Would this script be
appropriate? Probably not. Would it be more powerful to
use a script that related to something you and your client
related to? Probably.

Although the analogies are good and potentially powerful,


if they do not feel natural for you, you will not be confident
when reading them. And, more importantly, if they do not
feel natural for the client, another script choice would be
more appropriate.

So go through any script you intend to use. Make sure


there are no surprises. If someone hands you a script and
says, “Here. Use this when you have someone who wants
to lose weight,” make sure you go through the script ahead
of time.

Do not be afraid to alter a script. Scripts are not written in


stone. Make the script into something that flows freely from
your mouth.

One of the books I recommend at the end of this book,


The Handbook of Hypnotic Suggestions and Metaphors by
Hammond, contains many good scripts. However, they
were written by hypnotherapists with advanced
educational and medical degrees, and are therefore
extremely technical. Take the general idea of these scripts
and rewrite them. You have got to tailor things to your own
unique flavor. I cannot emphasize that enough.

The only rule for modifying scripts is this: Never insert


anything that could cause harm.

We do not harm people. We help people. Say good things.


Do not say frightening or harmful things. Do not excite your
client. Bore him. Everything is calm. Everything is
peaceful. Everything is beautiful. Everything is positive.

As long as you remember not to harm people, your script


will be fine.

If you do not have a script to modify, you will have to write


your own script. Let’s assume that your client wants to lose
weight and you do not have a script.

What should you do? Do you give up? No. You do not give
up. You take heart in the fact that everything you need is
already within you. You just need a little guidance.

So let’s take this step-by-step.

First of all, ask yourself what the goal is. Here, the goal is
for the client to lose weight.

Before writing the script, you need to find out what a


reasonable target is. Do not allow the client to expect to
lose 100 pounds in six weeks. If you are not sure what is
reasonable, consult a dietician or a physician. (Remember:

if your client is under the care of another healthcare


professional, make sure you are agreement with the
course of treatment.)

Find out how much weight the person can expect to lose,
and set a reasonable target within a reasonable time
frame.

Your due diligence should continue with a conversation


with the client. Before you write the script, find out what the
client is eating that is harmful. Ask the client: “What are the
foods you are eating, and when are you eating them?” And
then work this information into the script.

For example, perhaps the client says, “I am eating


Snickers bars at 11 p.m. right before I go to bed. I am
eating three of them a night. I cannot figure out why on
earth I am gaining weight. It is just not fair.”

The script is the place to alter the negative behavior that is


causing the problem. Your script will want to tell this client:
that he can and will change his behavior.

If the person is gaining weight, unable to talk to potential


romantic partners, or scared of flying, the script is the
place to insert suggestions for positive change. The script
is where the healing takes place.

If she is afraid of planes, she gets on that plane. She takes


that plane ride. She gets off that plane and nothing has
gone wrong. Have her imagine the whole thing. She is
safe the entire time. Nothing goes wrong. Be creative.
Say things like, “You can see the cockpit from where you
are sitting and everything looks fine. And you know that
your bags are stowed and you just feel great because
everything is taken care of. It is a smooth flight. You look

outside. And it is daytime and you see the sky and it is so


beautiful.”

If you are working on motivation, find out why the client is


not motivated. Is she unmotivated because she does not
think she will accomplish the desired results? If so, the
script should help the client to see herself as having
already accomplished the results. The client already has
achieved whatever it is that is causing her to procrastinate.

If the client is afraid of snakes, have him see a snake from


a distance. Tell him, “Everything is fine and now if you
want to you can walk closer. Only walk as close as you
feel comfortable with and no closer. And each time you
hear my voice, you can allow yourself to get closer but
understand that no harm will come to you.”
When writing a script, I am inviting you to use your
creativity. I am inviting you to reach inside and pull
something out of yourself something that will be helpful. I
am not going to tell you a way that is written in stone
because that would limit your creativity. Beyond the sky is
the limit. Go beyond. Just let it flow. Keep in mind your
plan, your idea, and your motive. Your motivation is to help
the person. You are trying to help the client.

Everything is positive. Everything is uplifting. We are not


dwelling on the negative. We focus on the positive.

Keep your eye on the mark and remember that you will
end up at whatever point on which you have focused.
Likewise, we want to keep the client’s focus on the positive
change from within. The client should imagine that the
change has happened. We want the client to think: “I am
already flying. I am not planning on it. I am getting on that
plane. I am not imagining it. I am flying. I am getting as
close to that snake as I feel comfortable. I am taking the
steps to get to that escalator and I am on it and everything
is fine.”

As discussed earlier, a person’s body does not know the


difference between imaging something and having it
actually happen. This means that the client has the
advantage of knowing rationally that the situation is not
occurring, but physically and emotionally the client feels he
has experienced the event.

Therefore, when it comes time for the client to go down the


escalator, his body will feel as though he has a positive
and successful experience under his belt.

Though they are the meat of the session, scripts should


not exceed 10 minutes when read slowly aloud.

The following chapters contain scripts which can be used


by you in working with yourself or working with clients. I
have divided them into chapters to make referencing them
easier. Keep in mind that the chapter titles are only
general guides and that some scripts could be used for
multiple purposes. You may also feel free to modify any of

Stop Stuttering
And as you continue relaxing deeper and deeper and more
deeply relaxed, I would like you to realize just how
powerful you are. Realize what an amazing speaker you
are. You are always able to say words clearly and with
distinction. Your annunciation is becoming better and
better every day and your pronunciation is also becoming
better and better every day. Imagine yourself now, in front
of a group of people speaking. Notice how smoothly your
words flow. Notice that they are interested in what you
have to say. They notice you and regard you as a
wonderful person and you are okay having their attention
on you. From now on you look forward to opportunities to
speak publicly. Your words flow out smoothly from your
mouth, that’s right. You take time to speak appropriately,
that’s right. Before you speak you prepare the first few
words in your mind so that when you do speak, those
words come out smoothly. Eventually this process will
become unnecessary because words will simply flow from
your mouth automatically, smoothly every time. Imagine
yourself speaking one on one to someone now. Notice
how smoothly your words flow from your mouth. You keep
the conversation flowing easily, that’s right. Just enjoying
having a wonderful conversation with them. Now imagine
yourself speaking to an authority figure, someone you
respect. Notice how smooth your words flow. You are
relaxed and calm the whole time, relaxed and calm. Think
the word smooth when you talk, smooth, that’s right. Your
words are smooth. You are relaxed when you talk even to
an authority figure. Now imagine yourself in an argument
with someone, that’s right see yourself arguing. Notice
how smoothly your words flow as you think the word
smooth. You are able to express your point of view with
the other person or with other people even if you are
arguing. Words just flow from your mouth easily, naturally,
effortlessly, one word after another as if they are just one

long word flowing from your mouth and from now on


people will regard you as a wonderful speaker, someone
who speaks with distinction, someone who speaks clearly
and smoothly, someone with wonderful annunciation and
pronunciation. Relax now and realize just how powerful
you are able to speak clearly in any situation. I’d like you
now to imagine yourself in another situation of your
choosing. See yourself speaking clearly, expressing
exactly what you feel and think. Notice the other person or
the other people listening to you, interested in what you
have to say. This makes you even more relaxed, even
more able to speak smoothly and clearly and you think the
word smooth in your mind the whole time, that’s right,
smooth. Words flow from your mouth, that’s right. You are
always relaxed when speaking, always relaxed. I’d like you
to realize that right now your subconscious mind is being
programmed to allow you to speak smoothly, easily,
almost effortlessly every time you speak. Your words flow
together, one word connects to the next in a smooth flow
of words. And these words make a smooth flow of
sentences. And these sentences make up a smooth flow
of paragraphs and these paragraphs allow you to express
what you feel and what you think easily, smoothly,
effortlessly. You are an amazing speaker. And from now
you will think of yourself as an amazing speaker because
that is what you are, an amazing speaker, a wonderful,
amazing, powerful, smooth speaker. So relax and realize
that everything is going to be just fine because your
subconscious mind is now programmed to allow you to
speak smoothly. Over the next few weeks I would like you
to make a plan to find numerous different opportunities in
which you can speak to others. The more experience you
get speaking to others, the more comfortable you become
speaking smoothly. So over the next few weeks you will
look for opportunities to speak to others whether in public
or private, social situations or non-social situations, groups
or individuals. You will look for numerous different types of
opportunities in which you can speak to demonstrate to

yourself and others just how smoothly you speak now,


that’s right, smoothly. You look for opportunities to speak
to people on the phone. See yourself talking on the phone
now, smoothly. One word connects to the next, that’s right.
You look for opportunities to speak to others. This allows
you to become more and more confident as a speaker. So
relax even more deeply now and realize that everything is
going to be just fine.

Stop Snoring
And as you continue relaxing deeper, deeper, and more
deeply relaxed, you realize just how peaceful you are in all
areas of your life. You realize just how dedicated you are
to improving your life and now you have chosen to let go of
snoring. You have chosen to stop snoring and this is a
wonderful idea for yourself and others. And so in order to
accomplish this goal, you have decided to take several
very powerful steps. If you are overweight you will begin
an appropriate exercise program which will allow you to
lose weight. Sometimes snoring is caused by being
overweight so you have decided to keep your weight in
line by eating appropriate foods and exercising, allowing
yourself to lose weight and to maintain an appropriate
weight for your height. You follow a healthy lifestyle to
develop good muscle tone and to lose weight. And this
helps you eliminate snoring. Also, you cut back or
eliminate alcohol. You realize that drinking can cause
snoring so if you drink at night you cut back or eliminate
this activity. This also helps eliminate your snoring and you
choose to follow a regular sleeping pattern, sleeping at a
regular time every night, waking up at a regular time if this
is possible with your life pattern. Your sleeping pattern is
an important part of your life pattern. And so if it is possible
to keep it consistent, then you do so. You choose to sleep
on your front or your side instead of your back and this
also helps in eliminating snoring. By using all of these
habits consistently you will find that you are able to
eliminate snoring. If your snoring persists after taking the
steps, you of course seek further assistance from a
medical professional. You are so relaxed now realizing
that your subconscious mind is being programmed to take
the steps necessary to eliminate snoring from your life.
You are so very proud of yourself for taking these steps
and these steps are programmed into your subconscious
mind. You don’t have to think about them before you fall
asleep, they become part of your life as a natural result of

listening to this recording. Once again, if you are


overweight, you choose to lose weight. You choose to live
a healthy lifestyle, to develop good muscle tone and to
lose weight. You avoid alcohol near bedtime or you cut
back on alcohol because drinking can cause snoring. You
follow a regular sleep pattern if it is possible. You chose to
sleep on your side or on your front rather than on your
back. This will also help stop snoring and once you have
used all these techniques if you need further assistance
you seek the help from a medical professional because
you are determined to stop snoring. Congratulations on
this powerful decision to help not only yourself, but those
who are in your life. Everyone is on your side to help you
stop snoring. You are more dedicated than ever to stop
snoring. Following these simple guidelines will help you
eliminate snoring from your life permanently. So relax,
relax and realize that everything is going to be just fine.

Stop Smoking
Willingness is a state of mind and you are willing to be a
non smoker because that is what you want. You will
succeed. You are willing to do whatever it takes to produce
the results you want. You choose to be a non smoker. Just
be willing, be willing. Be willing to do whatever it takes to
be a non smoker. Your thoughts create your behavior.
When you have a behavior you want to change, you
change the thought pattern and the behavior changes
automatically. All of your behavior results directly from
your thoughts. Therefore, think of yourself as a non
smoker. Hear yourself saying I am a non smoker. When
someone offers you a cigarette, hear yourself saying, no
thanks, I don’t smoke. For your body, smoking is poison.
You want to live a long and healthy life. You owe your
body respect and protection. You have made a
commitment to protect and respect your body and when
you do that, you then have the power with in you to smoke
your last cigarette. You will maintain your non smoking
easily and effortlessly. Just relax, let it happen, hear
yourself repeating slowly in your subconscious mind, I am
a non smoker now and forever more. I am going to make
this work. I expect this to work. I now allow myself to be a
non smoker. I deserve to be a non smoker. You will
maintain your non smoking permanently. You will be
relaxed when others are smoking around you. Cigarettes
are poison. Cigarettes are filled with over 4,000
substances and then when someone offers you a
cigarette, hear yourself say no thank you, I quit. You are
now and forever more a non smoker. In the morning,
before you can even open your eyes tell yourself, I am
strongly motivated to be a non smoker, one day at a time
easily and effortlessly. See yourself going through your
day and night without a cigarette. That’s right, see yourself
getting up in the morning without a cigarette. See yourself
having coffee or reading the paper, doing what you do in
the morning without a cigarette. See yourself on a phone,

without a cigarette. See yourself driving, playing your


favorite music, relaxed and comfortable, without a
cigarette. See yourself after a meal, without a cigarette.
Relaxed and comfortable, no interest, no desire. See
yourself doing the things that you do throughout the day,
whatever they may be, without a cigarette, uninterested,
no desire. See yourself out with others, and someone
lights up, tell yourself, cigarettes are not a sign of
friendship. Cigarettes are poison. You are now and forever
more a non smoker. And long ago there is a food that you
decided not to eat. Imagine that food now. You made a
decision that you would not eat that food and nothing and
no one could make you pick up a fork and eat that
disgusting and nauseating food. Just as now you have

a look at a pack of cigarettes you will think of that food and
nothing and no one can make you take the first puff. You
are now and forever more a non smoker. And as you relax
I would like to recall a time in your life, a time in your life
when you felt completely confident and proud of yourself.
See that moment clearly. Notice the colors in the room.
Hear the sounds associated with that event. Notice any
odors associated with that event. Feel the atmosphere,
your clothes, and the temperature and now make all of
those sounds, sights, and smells even more vivid and now
allow the feeling of pride associated with this event to build
in intensity. And when you feel the pride associated with
this event at the maximum level of intensity, make a fist
with your former smoking hand and as you hold the fist
tightly, take three slow deep breaths, in and out. Feel even
more intensely the pride that you felt during the event.
That’s right, you are there now at that event. Feel that
adrenaline rush and as you breathe in and out now. Feel
the sense of pride begin to get stronger. Now unclench

you will use the suggestion as long as you need it. When
you no longer need it, it will just fade away. If you ever feel
an urge or a craving for a cigarette, you will make a fist
with your former smoking hand, that’s right, a tight fist.
This is now your power hand. This is a signal to your
subconscious mind which says I am powerful. I am a non
smoker. Now take three deep breaths in and out. And as
you exhale each time, exhale all of that craving out into the
atmosphere where it just dissipates and fades away.
Remember if you feel a craving, make a fist and take three
deep breaths. Tell yourself that a craving for a cigarette
lasts for just a few seconds and after you have done this,
you can relax that hand. All you need to cope with is a few
seconds, so distract yourself. Think of the food you want to
eat, this is not deprivation, this is reward. Tell yourself, I
am not giving up pleasure, I am giving up poison. Tell
yourself, the first puff is the problem. If I never take the first
puff, I have no problem. You are now and forever more a
non smoker. Imagine yourself one year from now. You are
out with friends. You feel great. You look great. It has been
a wonderful year. People around you are smoking. As you
watch them puff away, you think about how lucky you are
to be rid of that dirty, killing habit. Hear someone offer you
a cigarette. Hear yourself say no thank you, I stopped
smoking. You are now and forever more a non smoker and
every night before going to sleep, tell yourself, I am a
permanent non smoker. I expect to be a non smoker. I will
allow myself to be a non smoker. I deserve to be a non
smoker. Relax, let the results take care of themselves. You
are a non smoker. You have given up smoking for many
reasons. Think of those reasons now. Clean, clear,
healthy, pink lungs. More energy, more stamina. Clean
smelling mouth. Clean smelling breath. To be a better
influence. To reinforce your confidence, to live a longer

You are not tempted to analyze this session. You do not
judge what I am saying and you do not judge me. You are
completely open to the words that you hear because you
want to completely avoid overanalyzing everything around
you. As you sit back and relax you notice the sense of
calm that has come over body. Not only is your body at
peace, but so is your mind. You look forward to the day
where you can appreciate things for what they are and
appreciate people for who they are without scrutinizing
over every detail. You decide to start over. You decide that
you will seeing the world around you in a different light.
From this point on you will see things for what they are and
the only thoughts coming from your head will be positive
and accurate. When deciding on something, maybe is no
longer an option for you. You decide on things on the spot
without overanalyzing and you always feel confident about
your decision. You realize that you waste a lot of your time
over thinking things because you are often right the first
time. As you come to this realization, you learn to trust
your gut instinct and you always go with it. Imagine
yourself in a situation where you are often tempted to over
think things. The old you would have taken ten minutes to
come up with a decision and the old you still would not
have felt confident with your decision. Now you trust
yourself a lot more and you are confident in your quick
decisions. You find yourself with extra time during your day
to appreciate the world around you. Time that you to be
spent overanalyzing things, is not spent being more
productive in a positive way. Imagine yourself in a situation
where you are so engrossed in some minuscule detail that

situations and look at the big picture. Look at all the things

intelligent. Picture your new lifestyle now. You are always
confident about the decisions you make. You no longer
feel the need to overanalyze the world around you. You

accomplished a major task in your life. You enjoy life more.
You see the positive because you are a very happy,
positive person. You notice that your head is very clear. At
all times you are able to think clearly and confidently. You
use your ability to reason when you need to, your

Stop Eating Carbs


And as you continue relaxing deeper, and deeper and
more deeply relaxed, I would like you to imagine a table
filled with all the carbohydrates which you formerly ate.
Look at this table now and notice that they are beginning
to look rotten and moldy and old and completely
unacceptable to you. And on a scale from one to ten, one
being the least acceptable and ten being delicious and
highly acceptable, I would like you to now imagine that
these carbohydrates are an eight. They are beginning to
turn now. They’re beginning to lose their freshness, now a
seven. They are beginning to look more and more
disgusting to you. And now a six. As flies begin to gather
and land on the various carbohydrates on that table. And
now a five, they have become inedible. You cannot eat
those carbohydrates. Now a four. They are rotting, they
are decomposing. Look at all the carbohydrates on the
table. Look at each one individually. Notice how disgusting
they are. And now a three. Those carbohydrates are no
longer food. They no longer interest you. They are
thoroughly disgusting to you. Your body rejects them, they
stink, they are not food for your body. Now a two. when I
reach the next number, those carbohydrates will simply be
masses of mold and now a one. They no longer resemble
carbohydrates. They look like masses of mold on that
table. Flies have gathered on the table as well. Now you
push that table away from you because you could not
imagine eating any of those carbohydrates. They are
disgusting and this is how carbohydrates will seem to you
from now on, thoroughly disgusting and unacceptable.
Carbohydrates no longer seem to be food. They seem to
be unacceptable lumps of mold. So you are no longer
entrusted in eating carbohydrates. Your body rejects
carbohydrates. And I want you now to breathe in deeply
and as you do, breathe in a sense of confidence and
relaxation and hold that breath, open your mouth slightly
and exhale. And as you exhale, exhale any cravings for

carbohydrates, let them go. And as you breathe in deeply


again, breathe in relaxation and calm peace of mind. And
as you exhale slowly through your mouth, exhale any last
bit of cravings for carbohydrates, let them go, let those

and naturally, realize that you no longer have an interest in
carbohydrates. They are a thing of the past for you. Your
body rejects these and does not accept them as food. You
are free your craving for carbohydrates. Instead you
choose other foods which you desire. So I would like you
to relax deeply now and realize that everything is going to
be just fine.

And as you continue relaxing deeper and deeper and more

honor yourself and others. So you constantly tell the truth.

Willingness is a state of mind and you are willing to stop

whatever it takes to quit. Your thoughts create your
behavior. When you have a behavior you want to change,
you change the thought pattern and the behavior changes
automatically. All of your behavior results directly from
your thoughts. Therefore, think of yourself as a non
tobacco user. Hear yourself saying I no longer chew
tobacco. When someone offers you tobacco, hear yourself
saying, no thanks, I don’t do that anymore. For your body,
tobacco is poison. You want to live a long and healthy life.
You owe your body respect and protection. You have
made a commitment to protect and respect your body and
when you do that, you then have the power within you to
chew your last cigarette. You will quit chewing tobacco
easily and effortlessly. Just relax, let it happen, hear
yourself repeating slowly in your subconscious mind, I no
longer chew tobacco, now and forever more. I am going to
make this work. I expect this to work. I now allow myself to
rid my life of tobacco products. I deserve to stop. You will
maintain your it permanently. You will be relaxed when

Tobacco is filled with bad substances and then when
someone offers you tobacco, hear yourself say no thank

a decision that you would not eat that food and nothing
and no one could make you pick up a fork and eat that

you are and you realize just how much self control you
have. You are a powerful person with a tremendous
amount of self control. And you allow yourself to change
negative eating patterns into a positive relationship with
food and you allow this to take place easily and
effortlessly. You are so very relaxed. And you find that you
eat very small portions of food when you are hungry. You
imagine your body to be like a furnace and you realize that
you must keep that fire burning at a constant level, giving
yourself an appropriate amount of energy in the form of
food throughout your day. And so you keep the furnace
stoped. And you are relaxed. You eat appropriate amounts
of food when you are hungry and once you have eaten the
appropriate amount of food you simply stop eating, you
stop eating. And you realize that you are very comfortable
eating small amounts of food on a regular basis, small
amounts of food on a regular basis because you are
relaxed and at ease. And if at any time you should feel any
urge to go beyond a small amount of food, you should deal
with the issue that causes those feelings, you deal with
that issue in a very straightforward, direct, and mature
way. And then you continue to relax and day by day you
are becoming better and better at dealing with issues in
your life. You see them as challenges which you will
overcome. And so when you think of food you only think of
eating food for energy. And you eat small amounts of food
when you are hungry. And you relax between meals and
you relax now deeper and deeper.

Stop Binge Drinking


And as you relax more and more deeply, you realize just
how powerful you are. I would like you now to imagine
yourself in a situation where alcohol is present. And notice
that if you have any, you have a very small amount, a very,
very small amount. Whether you are alone or with friends,
a very small amount is enough for you. And perhaps you
will choose to avoid alcohol completely, that is your own
powerful choice because you have the power to control
your actions. And you will find that day by day you are able
to deal with stress and tension easily. You see the
situations in your life as challenges, challenges which you
will easily overcome. And so when stress arises in your
life, you deal with it immediately, efficiently, and maturely.
And then you continue to relax. And you now choose
other, more productive activities rather than drinking. Think
now about all the activities you enjoy doing, that’s right.
There are so many positive things in life which bring you
pleasure. And so rather than drinking you find that you are
interested in many of those activities. And if you find
yourself in a situation where you are drinking, you realize
that you will have tremendous self control and you will only
drink a very small amount of alcohol and if there is any
matter on your mind, you will deal with that matter easily
and efficiently, you will deal with that emotion in a very
productive way.

Young at Heart
And as you continue to relax deeper and deeper and more
deeply relaxed, I’d like you now to really get in touch with
that part of you that has youthful vigor and vitality and
energy and the thirst for fun and adventure, that’s right.
That childlike part of you that just wants to have fun and
you realize that that is okay. Having fun is okay, it is a part
of you. It is a part of you that makes you human. You
desire to have fun and you deserve to have fun and day by
day you will have more and more exciting and fun
adventures. I’d like you now to think about several things
you can do tomorrow, several exciting and fun and
adventurous things. Perhaps you can plan a trip, that’s
right. Perhaps you can do something you have been
putting off, something fun and adventurous. And whether
you are planning it or actually doing it tomorrow, you are
taking powerful positive steps toward being young at heart,
that’s right. And you continue the momentum and it builds
the desire to have fun builds within you day by day. You
desire to have fun. And the more fun you have, the more
fun you desire, that’s right. You live a very balanced life
and fun is part of that balance. Allow yourself to be young
at heart, to have fun, to enjoy life, you deserve it. Realize
now that you are worthy of all the wonderful things life has
to offer and you allow yourself to enjoy life. So relax now
and realize that you will think of many wonderful fun things

Writer’s Block
And as you continue relaxing deeper, deeper and more
deeply relaxed, I would like you now to imagine that
project which you would like to work on and if your have
several, just imagine one, one writing project. And see
yourself sitting down in front of your computer or wherever
you write, perhaps you write on paper or perhaps you write
on the computer, but however and wherever you write,
imagine yourself there now. And as you look at the screen
or the paper, I want you to imagine seeing right through
what you are looking at. It’s as if a small dot is forming at
the center of the screen or the paper and opening up
slowly. Now it is the size of a quarter. Now it is the size of
a tennis ball. The dot continues to grow as this opening in
the screen or the paper continues to grow. Now it is the
size of a basketball. Now it overtakes the entire screen or
paper, this hole that is opening. This is a window which is
opening. Through this window you can see many ideas
which are in your mind. As you now look through that
window, through that portal, you can see many ideas
floating around, moving around. They are dynamic and
colorful and very active ideas. Perhaps they are words or
events or people or shapes. Perhaps you hear things
coming from there. Perhaps you only see things. Perhaps
you feel things coming from there, through that portal. You
are very tuned in now to those ideas, to those concepts
flowing now freely as they now move out through that
portal into the room in which you are sitting. And you see
people moving and talking. You see objects moving. You
see wonderful ideas. You see words forming. It’s as if you
are surrounded by magic. You see things all around you,
filling the room you are in, flowing out of the portal and
filling the room you are in. and you realize that any time
you sit down to write whether on a piece of paper or on the
computer, ideas flow out through the portal into the room
in which you are sitting. And if you are outside, they flow
outside to be near you, to surround you, these wonderful,

amazing ideas. And this happens automatically when you


sit down to write. This is an automatic process. First you
perceive in your mind the dot on the screen or paper and
then it grows in size radiating outward a circle growing until
it takes over completely the page or the computer screen.
And then ideas begin to flow out from it. First you see the
ideas inside the portal as if you are getting a glimpse of
another world through the portal. And then the ideas begin
to flow out from the portal toward you, filling the room you
are in or if you are outside they surround you. Ideas
floating around you everywhere. And you are easily able to
gather these ideas and write about them. So now see
yourself writing either with pen, pencil, or a keyboard or
perhaps you see yourself recording these ideas on a
recording device. You simply begin recording these ideas
in the way you choose to record them. Notice the more
you record, the more they flow. You let yourself go. You let
yourself record these ideas either by typing them, writing
them or recording them. You capture these ideas. See
yourself capturing them now. Let go of criticism, just
capture these ideas. Editing can happen later. Right now
just focus on capturing, capturing these ideas, that’s right
good. And every time you sit down to write this process will
happen automatically. The ideas will flow through the
portal and you will capture them. You are being given a
direct command to let go of any filters and just capture the
ideas. Editing happens later. Right now you are just
focused on capturing, good. And day by day as you listen
to this recording, your powers are tuning into the ideas in
this portal, they grow in intensity so that very soon indeed
you will be able to just sit down and suddenly have an
amazing array of ideas. Also, your ability to capture these
ideas in an unfiltered way will grow in intensity day by day.
So very soon indeed you will be able to sit down and
capture ideas, that’s right. See yourself capturing even
more ideas. And perhaps tomorrow when you wake up you
will have some wonderful ideas right away which you will

And as you continue to relax, you imagine yourself now
playing pool, so relaxed, so confident. See yourself
breaking, that’s right. A perfect break. See yourself lining
up your first shot. Your skills as a pool player are very
impressive and day by day you are becoming a better and
better pool player. People notice you and they regard you
as an amazing pool player and from now on you will
consider yourself to be an amazing pool player. You’re
able to make every shot easily and effortlessly. Imagine
yourself now, making a bank shot, easily and effortlessly. It
is almost as if all the geometric possibilities present
themselves to you and you can make your selection. Your
knowledge of the game of pool is increasing day by day.
Your more and more clam and relaxed and focused as you
play. You find yourself seeking advice from other players
whom you respect. You find yourself practicing on a
regular basis. And even during those times when you are
not playing, you mentally review your games, learning from
the past to make the next game your best game ever. You

And as you relax more and more, drifting, floating, deeper
and deeper and more deeply relaxed, you imagine yourself
now standing, standing tall, standing at the lane. You have
positioned yourself perfectly, that’s right. It is the first
frame. You see all ten pins and you are very focused,
focused on the pocket. You realize that you have prepared
yourself. You have the necessary skills to hit the pocket
perfectly. And now as you approach to the line, you draw
your arm back and release the ball at the line, smoothly.
And you watch as the ball goes to the pocket, strike. You
feel wonderful and you imagine yourself now in another
frame, relaxed. You see all ten pins in front of you.
Standing tall, so very focused, it’s almost as if the only
things which exist in the universe are those ten pins. And
you see the pocket. You see where the ball needs to go.
And as you now make your approach to the line, drawing
your arm back and releasing smoothly from the line, you
watch as the ball goes to the pocket, strike. You are able
to bowl a strike any time you choose simply by focusing on
the pocket. I’d like you now to imagine that it is time to pick
up a spare. And you can imagine this spare to be any
configuration you choose because they are all very easy
for you. You stand tall, very confident. You understand
exactly where the ball needs to go and as you now make
your approach to the line, drawing your arm back and
releasing smoothly at the line. You watch the ball go
exactly where you need it to go. And you pick up the spare
easily, easily. Day by day you are becoming a better
bowler. People notice your abilities. They realize just how
skilled you are. And you are becoming more skilled now.
Allowing yourself to bowl perfectly. Allowing yourself to
win. Allowing yourself to raise your high game. Allowing
yourself to raise your average. Allowing yourself to
improve every time you bowl and between games, you
improve by mentally going through your strategy, by

Weight Loss
Because you are now at peace and relaxed, you can be
successful at reaching any goal at losing weight. You are
imagining that you have lost the amount of weight you no
longer want or need and that you have maintained that
weight loss. You can imagine and feel and think of yourself
as slimmer slimmer, thinner thinner, muscles tight, total
body in shape. Your subconscious will now act on this
image and realize and actualize this image and you will
allow yourself to lose weight, to lose weight. Lose the
amount of weight that you no longer want or need and to
maintain that weight loss. You change negative eating
patterns into good patterns now. You allow this to take
place easily and effortlessly and now you imagine for a
moment a table, a table in front of you and you fill this
table with foods that are harmful to you, foods that are
harmful to your body and emotions. You imagine these
foods. They are sweets, snack foods, and junk foods. You
place them on the table. These foods are all harmful to
you. They are like poison to your system. These kinds of
foods cause you to gain weight you no longer want or
need. If you choose to eat any of these foods, you eat a
small small amount. A very minute amount of these foods
satisfies you completely and that satisfies you completely.
You couldn’t eat another bite so no you push these foods
off the table, push them away from you. Your body rejects
these foods. Your mind and your emotions reject these
foods. You clear the table and now on that empty table you
place the many foods that you enjoy anyway. Good,
healthful foods. Foods that contain fewer calories. These
are the fruits that you enjoy, cool, clean and crisp. There
are the vegetables that you enjoy. You see those good,
healthful foods on the table and you imagine eating those
good foods and you eat slowly. Eat slowly. Whether you
are conversing or not, you are totally aware of the amount
you are eating and you eat modest portions and then stop.
And that feels fine, and that feels fine. You eat correct and

reasonable amounts and you are totally satisfied and you


are totally satisfied. You are satisfied from one meal to the
next and have no desire to snack between meals. You feel
totally proud of yourself. You reflect on all the positive

be successful, reaching every goal that you have and
creating the most healthful and positive life for yourself.
And now you imagine seeing yourself, stomach flat, hips
and thighs firm and trim, legs firm and slim. You look great
and feel so good. You are relaxed and peaceful and food
is less and less important and you are more comfortable
eating more slowly. Snacking is unimportant to you,
regardless of where you are or what you are working on at
home or at work. You can eat small amounts of food in a
restaurant and you will eat more slowly. You may leave
part of your meal on your plate and that is just fine.
Regardless of stress you are more at peace and relaxed
and food is less important to you. You feel proud of
yourself. The rewards are tremendous. And now whenever
you think of eating, you choose those good healthful foods
and you eat the correct amount and when you have eaten
the correct amount you stop eating. You stop eating. You
stop eating. You may even leave some food on your plate
and that is just fine. You simply stop eating and continue to
relax and allow that sense of confidence now and peace
now to flow through you. You are more motivated now
than ever before to create the most healthful and positive
life for yourself. To change old eating patterns into good
patterns, to lose the amount of weight you no longer want
or need and to maintain this weight loss. You feel
wonderful and you can begin to experience a new and
healthy vital energy that flows through your body and
mind. And your thoughts are positive, confident. You
reflect on all of the positive aspects about yourself, your
intelligence and creativity and you see yourself as the

And as you continue to relax you realize just how relaxed
you are in every situation. You are so relaxed thinking
about the wedding, so very relaxed. And imagine now that
it is the wedding day and you are so amazingly relaxed
and calm. And as you see yourself there on that wonderful
day, you see yourself smiling, so very, very at ease. And
as you look back now at all the events that led up to that
day, you see that they happened easily, they flowed
because you were calm. You were very relaxed. You were
very peaceful. So see yourself there on that special,
beautiful day, smiling, realizing that everything is just fine.
Everything just fell into place easily and effortlessly, that’s
right. And as you now slowly imagine yourself coming back
to the present, back to the present time, you now see a
calm, relaxed path to that special wedding day. You realize
that all the events will take place easily and that you will be
relaxed every step of the way. Relaxed and at ease, it’s as
if pressure just bounces off and away from you, bounces
off and away. It’s as if you have a protective shield around
you, a shield that protects you from outside stress and any
stress that comes from inside just drains away. Feel it
draining through the bottom of your feet now, that’s right.
Feel any inside stress draining from your body from the
bottom of your feet, leaving you relaxed and at ease. Day
by day you become more relaxed as you approach that
very peaceful, wonderful, calm day. So relax now and

Unwanted Hair Growth


And as you continue relaxing deeper and deeper and more
deeply relaxed, I would like you to imagine hair on a
certain part of your body or several parts of your body.
Just imagine the unwanted hair on your body. And really
focus now, focus on it’s location. I would like you to
imagine a circle or more than one circle being drawn
around the area or areas where the hair is growing, the
hair which you do not want. The circles should be large
enough to cover the entire area in each location. I’d like
you now to imagine a very powerful light directly over you.
This is a very powerful, cleansing, healing light. And from
this light you imagine a ray of light coming down, down,
down to your body and touching your body in that area or
those areas where the hair is growing which you no longer
want. And imagine this light having the powerful effect on
that area or those areas, the effect of eliminating the hair.
Your mind has complete control over your body. Your mind
has physiological control over your body. so by imagining
this exercise, although you are imagining an external
source controlling hair growth of your body, you realize
that your mind is actually in charge. This is just a simple
way for you to imagine the power your mind is now
exerting on those areas of your body. So as you are
imagining the healing, cleansing, powerful light sending
rays of light down to those areas now, you realize that it is
really your subconscious mind doing this. It is really you
handling this. And as you imagine those areas becoming
warmer now, you realize that the hair growth is being
instructed to cease in those areas so that very soon
indeed, in a few day s or weeks, you will realize that the
hair has ceased to grow in those areas. You can use this
recording any time you want for any part of your body.
However, I recommend that you focus on a certain area or
group of areas for twenty one nights in a row, same areas
so that your subconscious mind will understand that those
areas are no longer to produce hair. And by doing this

Now, see a blackboard, a chalkboard in front of you with
the uncomfortable labels you have been given in the past,
the labels that slowed you down and failed to reflect the
wonderful, strong, and good qualities that you have. And
now see those labels on the board and take the eraser and
erase those labels from the board. Just erase each one,
wipe it away. They have no meaning for you, none at all.
Now, the blackboard is blank and you write anything you
want to write. Now you take the chalk and you write the
words that describe yourself. You write confident, valuable,
important, capable, and skilled. And now you write other
words, other good positive words that describe you, do this
now [pause]. Now look at those words. Look at the words
you wrote, confident, valuable, important, capable, skilled
and the other words you wrote, the other good, positive
words you wrote to describe yourself. Look at those words.
And now just begin to imagine yourself standing tall, proud
of who you are. You are fine. The way you look and act
and think are fine. They contribute to making you the
wonderful person you are. Imagine yourself experience a
new and healthy energy, an energy that helps you to
accomplish all that you need to do. For a moment, just
reflect on all the positive aspects of yourself, your
creativity, your intelligence, your talents. People see you

And as you continue to relax more and more deeply and
deeper still, I want you to focus on your breathing. Your
breathing is steady and consistent. You breathe in and
out…very easily and effortlessly. You breathe 20,000
times a day. You realize that there is an art to breathing
and you focus in on your breathing. You are very aware of
the breaths you take throughout your day. You realize the
importance of breathing correctly. Breathing the right way
can enhance your life. Breathing correctly will relax you
during times of high stress. Correct breathing will also
enable you to be alert and give you a boost of energy
when you need it. You realize how important breathing is
beyond sustaining life. You realize that you can improve
your life beyond what you thought possible simply by
making changes to your breathing. Now go ahead and
focus on your breathing. As you inhale and exhale, you
make sure that your shoulders remain completely still. As
you breathe, your abdomen should be the only thing
moving. When you inhale, feel your abdomen expand
outward and as you exhale, feel your abdomen release
back inward. Go ahead and take several breaths, getting
used to the correct form of breathing. Inhale…letting your
abdomen expand out…and…exhale…feel your abdomen
retract. As you continue to take breaths, you make sure
that your shoulders stay steady as you breathe in and out.
You realize as you are taking these slow and steady
breaths that you relax more and more. You can use this
technique of relaxing when you are angry or upset over
something that is going on in your life. Realize that when
you become emotional, steady breathing can help calm
you so that you can think clearly and confidently. The art of
breathing is very important and can have a major effect on
your life. You enjoy learning new and different breathing
exercises because you feel that it can enhance your
enjoyment of life. Now picture yourself a couple of months
from now. You have perfected the art of breathing. You

challenging situations. You are able to relax and calm
yourself with your breath when faced with stressful

you are able to calm yourself down. When you are upset,
see yourself controlling your feelings with your breathing
patterns. You now no longer have to correct your

easily and efficient way. Your posture is always straight,
but not in a stiff way. You make sure that when your
posture is straight, you are limber and flexible to allow
proper breathing at all times. Now picture yourself a year
from now. You are able to breathe perfectly at all times
through out the day. You have perfected the art of
breathing. Breathing correctly has changed your life. You
have noticed major changes in your attitude and thinking.
You think more positively now than you ever did before.
You are able to control your emotions and feelings before
they come out, so that you are able to think clearly and
rationally. You find that you are more relaxed and stress
free than you ever have been before. You let things roll of

with who you are. You are Taurus represented by the bull.
You are strong and powerful. I would like you to realize
that although you are powerful, you can show this power in
a variety of ways. Most of them have nothing to do with
using force. Simply by being who you are and being very
powerful, you exude energy, positive feelings, and power,
simply by being powerful, people perceive your power. So
over the next few weeks you can let go of the idea of using
force. Force is unnecessary for someone as powerful as
you. Instead you can channel that energy. Channel that
energy in very appropriate ways. For example, you can
show people just how powerful you are by being a
wonderful person. You know that you are a hard worker
Taurus and you know that you work best when you have a
routine so you can show your power by sticking to that
routine, that powerful routine, that’s right. By being very
powerful and sticking to your routine you gain even more

And as you continue relaxing deeper, deeper, and more
deeply relaxed, I would like you to realize just how calm
you are. You are a very calm person, calm inside, calm
inside, calm inside. And because you are calm at all times,
you are calm when you think about your upcoming
surgery. You are very relaxed. You realize that you will be
in the hands of highly skilled professionals: surgeons,
people who assist in the operating room,
anesthesiologists, the entire staff which will be helping
during your surgery, all of them are highly trained. These
are some of the most skilled people in the entire world,
living up to the highest standards of educational
achievement. And they are licensed, they are certified by
the government to do what they do to the best of their
ability, every time. These are people who scored very
highly in school. These are people who applied
themselves and you can rest assured that they will apply
themselves when they are operating on you. You will be in
the hands of skilled professionals. So as you breathe in
deeply now, breathe in confidence and serenity and as you
exhale, let go of any doubt, just let it go. Breathe that out.
Breathe in deeply again, breathe in strength and relaxation
and as you exhale let go of anxiety and fear, let it go.
Continue breathing easily and effortlessly and naturally.
You will repeat this process right before you go into
surgery. Breathing in confidence and strength and all good
things and exhaling fear and doubt, letting it go. You will

are relaxed and calm because you will be calm before your

when you think about your upcoming surgery. Realize that
it is for your own good, it is to help you and to benefit you.
There is a wonderful benefit which you will receive from

recovering nicely. See a smile on your face. Everything is


fine, everything was fine, everything was fine. So relax and
realize that you are going to have a wonderful experience
in the hands of some of the highest trained people on this
planet. Relax, imagine that day on which you will have the
surgery. See yourself calm and relaxed, calm and relaxed,
so at ease, so peaceful. You are learning how to relax in
every situation and you are especially relaxed when you
think about your upcoming surgery. Think about the
benefits you will receive no matter what the procedure is.
There is some benefit you will receive, or perhaps
numerous benefits. Focus on those benefits and allow that
focus to relax you even more deeply now and when you
are going in to the surgery, that’s right. Even before you
receive any form of medication, that very morning when
you wake up, you will be relaxed and calm and peaceful,
ready to go through with the procedure which will improve
your life. Relax and realize that everything is going to be
just fine.

Stress
And as you continue to relax and unwind and drift I would
like you now to imagine yourself walking in a beautiful
field. You are so relaxed as you walk in this field. So very
relaxed from your head all the way down to your toes. And
it seems like the more you relax, the deeper you drift, into
a very deep state of relaxation. And you realize that day by
day you are becoming a more relaxed person as you
choose to let go of stress. And as you walk in that field,
feel stress being left behind as if it is dropping off your
body, that’s right. Feel the stress being left far behind as
you continue to walk. And any time in your life that you feel
stress, you realize you can take a walk in your mind and
leave stress far behind in that relaxing field, on that
beautiful day, that’s right. Because any time you feel stress
in your life, you stop, take a deep breath in, you hold it and
you exhale slowly and then you count to ten and as you do
you feel yourself drifting in your mind to that field, that
peaceful field where every step brings you closer and
closer to total relaxation, yet you are at the same time able
to focus on whatever it is you are doing. You remain
completely focused and relaxed because day by day you
are becoming a more and more relaxed person, relaxed
and at ease and letting go of stress, letting it go, letting it
go, letting it go.

Stop Teeth Grinding


And you find that day by day you are becoming more and
more relaxed. Just as you are relaxed right now. You will
become more and more relaxed in your daily life. Day by
day, relaxing more and more. And you will find that you
deal with situations as they arise. If there is a problem, you
handle it in that moment. You handle it in a very
productive, polite, yet assertive way. You are kind to
yourself. You are kind to yourself and you no longer have
time for negative thoughts or feelings. You fill your mind
with productive goals and if you should find yourself
grinding your teeth or tightening your cheek muscles, you
will want to keep your mouth slightly open, wide enough to
place your tongue between your back teeth. This will help
your muscles become loose, loose, loose. This will stop
your muscles from cramping. The longer your tongue stays
between your teeth, the more your muscles will become
loose, limp like we cotton and you will find them very soon
indeed. You no longer grind your teeth because you are
becoming more and more relaxed and teeth grinding is a
thing of the past. So just relax now and drift and enjoy this
peaceful state you are in.

Appendix
I have over two decades of experience in hypnosis. I
have a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of
Florida, an M.Ed. from Armstrong Atlantic State University,
and I am working on a doctorate degree at Georgia
Southern University. I am a certified clinical
hypnotherapist, a member of both the American Board of
Hypnotherapy and the National Guild of Hypnotists,
president of the American Alliance of Hypnotists, and
director of the Steve G. Jones School of Hypnotherapy. I
am also on the board of directors of the American Lung
Association in Los Angeles. I currently live in Savannah,
Georgia, but I see clients and teach classes worldwide.

My client base consists largely of people who need to
