ACTIVITY 3: Write a 5-paragraph essay that would answer the question: Do you agree or disagree that
one should have good communication skills in order to express himself/herself effectively?

“Being able to effectively communicate is what separates a person from others” - Richard
Branson. Good communication skills are the key to success in life. Developing your communication skills
will help all aspects of your life, from your professional life to social gatherings, and everything in
between. Communication helps us to connect with other people. It helps us express how we feel and
understands how other feels.

Communication skills are not only needed in daily personal life, but also required in the
profession, workplace and in business. For example, if you work in a team or interact with customers or
other people, you often find the certain situations which are challenging to handle, this is where having
best communication skills become handy. If you have good communication skills it is very easy to handle
customer’s queries, to follow your boss orders or to give insightful ideas with your work mates. Also, it is
important for a good communicator to be a good listener. Being a good listener fosters meaningful
relationships with those around you. Every person with great communication skills are in favour of
listening.

In addition, communicating helps people to express their ideas and feelings, and at the same
time, helps us to understand emotion and thoughts of the others. As a result, we will develop affection
or hatred toward other people, and positive or negative relationships will be created. Building good
relationships with other people can greatly reduce stress and anxiety in your life. In fact, improving your
social support is linked to better mental health in general, since having good friends can act as a “buffer”
for feelings of anxiety and low mood. Communication skills are the key to developing friendships and to
building a strong social support network. They also help you take care of your own needs, while being
respectful of the needs of others.

Furthermore, communication influences how we learn. When we were an infant, we learned to

talk over a period of many months or a year maybe. You learn to speak in public by first having
conversations, then by answering questions and expressing your opinions in class. Similarly, you learn to
write by first learning to read, then by writing and learning to think critically. Your speaking and writing
are reflections of your thoughts, experience, and education. Part of that combination is your level of
experience listening to other speakers, reading documents and styles of writing, and studying formats
similar to what you aim to produce.

Indeed, communication is very essential to us humans. But aside from developing our
communication skills, we also need to develop our listening skills. Listening allows one to make sense of
and understand what another person is saying. Without a proper communication skills
misunderstanding may arise or misconstrues the words or actions of another, it has also the potential to
create conflict. Poor communication is frustrating in the workplace and can lead to poor performance,
lack of teamwork, low morale and reduced profits. It can also affects one’s personal and social life.

ACTIVITY 5: Write a 5-paragraph essay that would answer any of the following question.
What makes a competent communicator?

One key factor in being a competent communicator is being able to convey a message clearly
and precisely to the receiver without confusion. Being able to effectively communicate with those
around us is an important key to everyday life. We communicate with others all day long, sometimes
without even realizing it. Having strong speaking and listening skills can greatly improve your
relationships and successes. To communicate effectively means to get your point across in the way that
you intend. To communicate appropriately means to attend to the rules and expectations that apply in a
social situation.

One characteristic that makes a one person a competent communicator is being self-aware.
Good communicators are aware of their own behavior and its effect on others. Researchers call this
awareness self-monitoring. People who are high self-monitors pay close attention to the way they look,
sound, and act in social situations. In contrast, people who are low self-monitors often seem oblivious to
both their own behaviors and other people’s reactions to them. Self-monitoring usually makes people
more competent communicators because it enables them to see how their behavior fit or doesn’t fit in a
given social setting. In addition, high self-monitors often have high levels of social and emotional
intelligence, qualities that allow them to understand people’s social behaviors and emotions accurately.

Adaptability as well can make a person be comptent at communicating it is the ability to adapt
your communication to the environment you're in. That is, you wouldn't communicate in the same way
to your closest friends as you would to your co-workers. Rather, while you're at work, you would adapt
your communication behaviors to the norms and standards of the communication environment at work,
and when you're with your friends, you adapt to that social environment accordingly. Competent
communicators are able to assess what is going to be appropriate and effective in a given context and
then modify their behaviors accordingly.

Moreover, cognitive complexity is a valuable skill because it keeps people from jumping to the
wrong conclusion and responding inappropriately. Someone with little cognitive complexity might feel
slighted during a conversation and might therefore ignore a person the next time they meet. In contrast,
someone with more cognitive complexity would remember that behaviors do not always mean when we
think they mean. That person would be more open-minded, considering several possible interpretations
of another person’s actions.

There are more characteristics that a person can acquire in order to be a good communicator.
But these three are the most common characteristics that we can easily improve in order to be one.
Everything we do in our life involves communication because it is a way for a sender to send message to
the receiver by verbal and non-verbal communication. However, in some parts of the world messages
that are delivered sometimes are not received in a way it is supposed to. A way to solve this is by using
competent communicator and intercultural communication because it makes it easier for people from
other cultures to communicate in general.

 Research on six well-known personalities (local/international) who you perceive had shown
unethical practices in communicating. Include a photo of the personality and a one-paragraph
(at least 10 sentences) description of how being unethical was shown by your chosen
personalities. Along with this, please allot also at least five sentences in answering this follow-up
question: How can we avoid unethical practices in communicating?

Plagiarism is the practice of taking

someone else's work or ideas and passing
them off as one's own. Plagiarism is
unethical for reasons; firstly, it is unethical
because it is a form of theft. By taking the
ideas and words of others and pretending
they are your own, you are stealing
someone else’s intellectual property.
Secondly, it is unethical because the
plagiariser subsequently benefits from this
theft. An example of this is Justin Bieber, along with singer, songwriter Usher were accused of plagiarism
by Devin “the Dude” Copeland and Mareio Overton and sued for $10 million. The accusers claimed the
song “Somebody to Love”, written by Usher and performed by Bieber, had been copied from their song
with the same title released in 2008. Although the case was eventually dismissed, early in 2014, just
over a year later the dismissal was overturned and the court case continued, starting what is bound to
be a lengthy court battle to try and settle the matter.

Secretly recording a telephone

conversation and spreading it publicly
without the consent of one party is also
an unethical practice in communicating.
It’s not just ethics. In most states, it’s the
law. Many states prohibit recording
phone conversations unless all parties
consent. That’s why you often hear
before connecting with a business over
the phone something like, “This call may
be monitored or recorded for quality
assurance.” An example of this is the
controversial issue between Taylor Swift, Kanye West and his husband Kim Kardashian-West. Critics
were mostly pleased with Kanye West’s newest album when he released it in February — save for a lyric
on the song “Famous.” He raps: “I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex/Why? I made that b---
famous.” She publicly lambasted the reference, though West and wife Kim Kardashian maintained they
informed Swift beforehand and she approved of the lyric. Kardashian even said in GQ magazine that she
had video evidence of a phone call between West and Swift, in which the pop star consented to the
lyric. But Swift didn’t give consent to the call’s recording or dissemination, she said on Instagram Sunday
night. That renders the call potentially illegal. That’s because California is one of the states that bans
recording phone calls and disseminating private conversations without the consent of all parties. West
and Kardashian recorded the conversation in a Los Angeles-area studio, a source familiar with the
incident told TMZ.

Living in the age of information, it is easy

to get lost in the plethora of different news
reports and sources. Some news is not reliable,
while the rest are fake. False information is news,
stories or hoaxes created to deliberately
misinform or deceive readers. Usually, these
stories are created to influence people’s views,
push a political agenda or cause confusion and
can often be a profitable business for online
publishers. False information can deceive people
by looking like trusted websites or using similar
names and web addresses to reputable news organisations. Last May, Mocha Uson, a political blogger,
and appointive public official in the Philippines reported that the Department of Health (DOH) gave
personal protective equipment (PPE) to healthcare workers. But it turns out that the photo that she
posted on her page wasn’t from the DOH– it was from the SM Foundation, which also donated
protective gear to various hospitals in the country. Two people filed a complaint against Uson for
propagating what they alleged was fake news, pushing the National Bureau of Investigation to summon
the high-ranking officer of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration. According to the
complainants, Uson violated Republic Act 10175, or the Bayanihan (“Camaraderie”) to Heal as One Act
of 2020, which prohibits individuals from spreading false information in connection with the COVID-19
pandemic.
Distorting Visuals are defined as
any subjective effect which alters and changes
the perception or appearance of pre-existing
visual data without adding any entirely new
content. Ethical communication is what every
company strives to have in order to keep
everything running smoothly and avoid
confusion. However, sometimes companies
cannot keep their Ethical communication at
max and Unethical communication occurs. An
American beauty vlogger James Charles is
being accused of editing his body in his latest
makeup advertisement. The social-media star
took to Instagram and Twitter with a new
campaign image for his namesake eye-shadow
palettes and brush set sold at Morphe. In the photo, he's dressed like an elf, shrunken down in size, and
positioned on a vanity next to an eye-shadow palette and setting-spray bottle. Shortly after Charles
shared the campaign image on Monday, he also shared some behind-the-scenes videos on Instagram.
The clips were removed from his story after 24 hours, though some people have reposted them on
Twitter. Many people shared the clips enthusiastically, while others pointed out that Charles doesn't
look exactly the same in both sets of images.

Inappropriate jokes are also form

of unethical communication example of
this is South Florida Congressman Brian
Mast joked about rape and referenced sex
with 15-year-old girls in old Facebook
comments to a friend who is now his
campaign manager. The messages were
posted years ago, but they’ve surfaced in
Mast’s tough re-election fight against
Democratic challenger Pam Keith. Mast, a
40-year-old Republican, represents one of
South Florida’s most competitive swing
districts. He apologized for the remarks.
One of the comments involves a Feb. 23, 2009, photo of a bar outing posted by Rocco LeDonni, who is
now Mast’s campaign manager. The photo was taken during LeDonni’s vacation to South Africa.Mast
commented, “im so proud of you... i hope you hook up with at least fifteen 15 year olds over there.... its
legel there right.”
Swearing betrays a poor
vocabulary and shows that you are
unable to express yourself clearly and
accurately. And if you swear at
someone - well that's just a form of
bullying. Especially if for a public
official where thousands of people
are watching them and even look at
them and admired, they should
choose their words accordingly. One
distinguishing characteristic of 2016
is, it's the first year the country
experienced almost daily doses of
President Rodrigo Duterte's passionate speeches. These speeches, more often than not, were peppered
with the curses and insults that are partly why Duterte has become controversial. The Philippine leader
has deployed a panoply of bad words, directed at a variety of groups and individuals, including US
President Barack Obama, the European Union, Senator Leila de Lima, and even priests. His foul mouth
has elicited different responses from his audience – from embarrassed laughter to outright
disgust. Duterte must've realized the effects of his expletives because he himself joked that God
threatened to take his plane down if he refused to clean his mouth.

FDOME GE-5 MODULE 3

ACTIVITY 2: Write an essay about the importance of World Englishes in both oral and written contexts.
Make sure to provide examples that will support your claims.

“Language is the blood of the soul into which thoughts run and out of which they grow. “ -Oliver
Wendell Holmes. English is known as the international language. It is the language which is used in many
countries. It is widely used in Education, Business, Movies, and even in Sports. In the Philippines, English
is used as medium of instruction. English is one of the most dominating languages of the world which is
having its impact on every field of work.

In today’s modern world the English language has become part and parcel of every existing field.
It has been an international language of communication, business, science, information technology,
entertainment and so on. Earlier everyone is considered to be literate by their degrees and diplomas,
but the knowledge of English language makes an individual literate in today’s world. Though many
countries do have English as their native language, those who have the command over the English
Language are considered and respected as highly educated. Moreover they ocean of career
opportunities are opened to those English speaking people anywhere and everywhere. It has become
the working of English and also an inevitable requirement for a number of fields, professions such as
computing and medicine.

Also, English language also plays a powerful tool in communication. In order to communicate
successfully, one needs a language that is commonly understood by most of the people in the speech
community. For many years, English has become the common language globally understood and
appreciated by nearly everyone. In other words English becomes an effective instrument to
communicate with everyone around the world. Information technology uses this ability of English to
function well in the field of communication by internet and emails.

It is no surprise that English is becoming the language for international communication. English
is the most widely spoken language of the world because of the power the United States in economic
and politic. English is the mother tongue of 380 million people, and it is used worldwide by the
newspapers, magazines, scientists, businessmen, and politicians. One billion to 1.5 billion people around
the world presently speak English. It is the most widely language in 70 countries (J. Draper.
1994).Globalization at the end of the twentieth century is occurring through the media, and technology,
thus affecting languages worldwide (Sebesta , 1996). Western culture has a large influence to keep it
raise and use these power to impose the word for being as a global language.

ACTIVITY 3: Write a short speech that contains standard English and bias-free language. Consider the
speech to be delivered in front of the students in your program.

We all fear death. The reality of death should make us think. Why is life on earth brief? Why is there
pain, sickness, suffering, and finally death?

I am not trying to be pessimistic but truthful. The Bible declares that the wages of sin is death! Sin here
doesn’t refer to some particular wrong in your life but to the problem faced by entire humanity.

Sin as a virus has infected all human beings. No one is exempt from its infection. The first social
distancing happened at the Garden of Eden when man sinned against God. The virus of sin created a
separation between God and man.

Just like one virus infected person can spread the infection to another all mankind got this sin infection
in their blood because of our first parent’s rebellion against God in the Garden of Eden.

The Bible also says that not one of us can escape death or earn our salvation or forgiveness by doing
good deeds. The bonus points we gain through our good deeds simply do not add up. It falls short.

Why? Because we all are sin-virus infected we owe a moral debt to God so huge we simply cannot pay
on our own. Someone else had to do it for us.

Therefore God send his Son Jesus as a human being to this earth to pour out his innocent blood–not
infected by the sin virus–on the cross to solve the sin problem.
The Bible declares: “For the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our
Lord.”

The gift of salvation.

It is given free.
To who all say “Thank You” and receive it.
