INTEGRATED TOURISM
LOCATION: The Union Territory of A&N islands are an archipelago of 572 islands
(of which 38 are inhabited) in the Bay of Bengal stretching over 700 Kms from
North to South. The islands lie 1200 kms. east of Chennai and 250 kms south of
Kolkata, and In close proximity to Burma and other South East Asian countries
(especially Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia).
AREA: A&N islands are spread over a total area of 8249 sq. Kms (Andaman -
6408 sq. kms & Nicobar -1841 sq. kms). Only 16.64 sq. kms fall under urban area.
Port Blair is the capital of the Union Territory of Andaman & Nicobar Islands. It is
located on the east coast of the South Andaman Island. Port Blair is the gateway to
the pristine islands.
TOURISM OVERVIEW
Within the last 5 years, tourist influx to the ANI has doubled from over 2 lakh
visitors in 2013 to 5 lakhs in 2018 (Directorate of Tourism, 2019).
Recent efforts by the government have focused on further increasing this footfall
because tourism has been described as a “key economic driver” by the NITI Aayog.
The NITI Aayog is guiding the Island Development Agency (IDA) in planning large-
scale tourism projects in ANI - the IDA was formed in 2017 by the Ministry of Home
Affairs with the intention of initiating “holistic development of the islands through
tourism”.

The major mode of transport is by roads and there are also the island water transport
and sometimes air transport. A stretch of 240 kilometers between Port Blair and
Maya Bunder is covered by bus transport.
Reach Andaman Nicobar Islands By Air
Port Blair is connected with Chennai and Calcutta. Presently, flights are operated by
Alliance Air on Chennai-Port Blair and Calcutta-Port Blair Sector Jet airways flights
operate daily from and to Chennai.
Reach Andaman Nicobar Islands By Sea
Regular passenger ship services are available to Port
Blair from Chennai, Calcutta and Vishakhapatnam. These are three to four sailings in
a month from Calcutta and Chennai to Port Blair.
Travelling Around Andaman Islands
Busses run between Port Blair and south Andaman convenience of the passengers.
Apart from the busses tourist taxis, maxi cabs and call taxis in the islands the bus
service offered by the government are limited.
CCESSIBILITY
Directorate of Shipping Services handles all the ferries in the Andaman Islands. There
are generally two kinds of ferries : small “tourist” ferries, and larger “local” ferries.
• Tourist Ferries : These ferries are small in size and can accommodate about
100 people at once. They also have air conditioned settings.
• Local Ferries : Local Ferries are larger in size and are more stable in the sea. They
offer about 400 seating capacity in two level : padded “bunk” or “luxury” seating
upstairs, and plain old benches on the “deck” downstairs.

ensure awareness about plans in tourism development, and the involvement of locals and
