(CLOUD COMPUTING)

I. Learning Competency with Code

Cloud Computing -TLE_IACSS9-12SUCN-If-j-IIa-e-35

II. Background Information for Learners

Cloud Computing shows how we live and work today. Whether we like it or
not, it has become an integral part of our lives. Institutions, companies and
businesses of all shapes, sizes and folks of life are now turning to Cloud
Computing. It underpins a vast number of services that includes consumer
services like Gmail or the cloud back-up of the photos on your smartphone, though
to the services which allow large enterprises to host all their data and run all of
their applications in the cloud. Netflix relies on cloud computing services to run its
video streaming service and its other business systems too, and have a number
of other organizations.
Cloud computing is becoming the default option for many apps: software
vendors are increasingly offering their applications as services over the internet
rather than standalone products as they try to switch to a subscription model. But
nothing is perfect and Cloud Computing is no exception. While it is vastly
beneficial, it also has some risks and concerns that should not be overlooked.
Therefore, in this learning activity sheets, we will discuss the overview, advantages
and disadvantages of Cloud Computing in details.

In this activity, you will learn the concept of cloud computing. Is it a literal
cloud where you can store your data? Well, just sit back and read this brief
discussion about what is cloud computing.
CLOUD COMPUTING BRIEF HISTORY

In 1963, DARPA (the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency),

presented MIT with $2 million for
Project MAC. The funding
included a requirement MIT
develop technology allowing for
a “computer to be used by two or
more people, simultaneously.” In
this case, one of those gigantic,
archaic computers using reels of
magnetic tape for memory and
was the precursor to what has
now become collectively known
as Cloud Computing. It acted as
a primitive Cloud with two or
three people accessing it. The word “Virtualization” was used to describe this
situation, though the word’s meaning later expanded.

In 1969, J. C. R. Licklider helped develop the ARPANET (Advanced

Research Projects Agency Network), a “very” primitive version of the Internet. JCR,
or “Lick” was both a psychologist and a computer scientist, and promoted a vision
called the “Intergalactic Computer Network” in which everyone on the planet
would be interconnected by way of computers, and able to access information from
anywhere. (What could such an unrealistic, impossible-to-pay-for, fantasy of the
future look like?) The Intergalactic Computer Network, otherwise known as the
Internet, is necessary for access to the Cloud.

The concept of Virtualization has evolved with the Internet, as businesses

began offering “virtual” private networks as a rentable service. The use of virtual
computers became popular in the 1990s, leading to the development of
the modern Cloud Computing infrastructure.

In 2011, IBM introduced the IBM Smart Cloud framework, in support

of Smarter Planet (a cultural thinking project). Then, Apple launched the ICloud,
which focuses on storing more personal information (photos, music, videos, etc.).
Also, during this year, Microsoft began advertising the Cloud on television, making
the general public aware of its ability to store photos, or video, with easy access.

Oracle introduced the Oracle Cloud in 2012, offering the three basics for
business, IaaS (Infrastructure-as-a-Service), PaaS (Platform-as-a-Service), and
SAAS (Software-as-a-Service).

5
WHAT IS CLOUD COMPUTING?

- storing of data and applications on remote servers, and accessing them via the
internet rather than saving or installing them on your personal or office
computer.

- is the delivery of on-demand computing services from applications to storage

and processing power, typically over the internet and on a pay-as-you-go
basis.

- offers highly scalable capabilities that are difficult or expensive to deliver locally.

Cloud computing

A fundamental concept behind cloud computing is that the location of the service,
and many of the details such as the hardware or operating system on which it is running,
are largely irrelevant to the user.

TYPES OF CLOUD DEPLOYMENT

What is Public Cloud
Computing?
A cloud platform that is
based on standard cloud
computing model in which
service provider offers
resources, applications storage
to the customers over the
internet is called as public
cloud computing.
The hardware resources
in public cloud are shared
among similar users and
accessible over a public
network such as the internet. Most of the applications that are offered over internet such
as Software as a Service (SaaS) offerings such as cloud storage and online applications
uses Public Cloud Computing platform. Budget conscious startups, SMEs not keen on
high level of security features looking to save money can opt for Public Cloud Computing.

Advantages of Public Cloud Computing

1. It offers greater scalability.
2. Its cost effectiveness helps you save money.
3. It offers reliability which means no single point of failure will interrupt your service.
4. Services like SaaS, (Paas), (Iaas) are easily available on Public Cloud platform as it
can be accessed from anywhere through any Internet enabled devices.

6
5. It is location independent – the services are available wherever the client is located.

Disadvantages of Public Cloud Computing

1. No control over privacy or security
2. Cannot be used for use of sensitive applications
3. Lacks complete flexibility as the platform and depends on the platform provider
4. No stringent protocols regarding data management

What is Private Cloud Computing?

 A cloud platform in which a secure cloud based environment with

dedicated storage and hardware resources provided to a single
organization is called Private Cloud Computing.
 The Private cloud can be either hosted within the company or outsourced
to a trusted and reliable third-party vendor. It offers company a greater
control over privacy and data security. The resources in case of private
cloud are not shared with others and hence it offers better performance
compared to public cloud. The additional layers of security allow company
to process confidential data and sensitive work in the private cloud
environment.

Advantages of Private Cloud Computing

1. Offers greater Security and Privacy
2. Offers more control over system configuration as per the company’s need
3. Greater reliability when it comes to performance
4. Enhances the quality of service offered by the clients
5. Saves money

Disadvantages of Private Cloud

1. Expensive when compared to public cloud
2. Requires IT Expertise

What is Hybrid Cloud Computing?

Hybrid Cloud computing allows you to use combination of both public and private
cloud. This helps companies to maximize their efficiency and deliver better performance
to clients. In this model companies can use public cloud for transfer of non-confidential
data and switch on to private cloud in case of sensitive data transfer or hosting of critical
applications. This model is gaining prominence in many business as it gives benefits of
both the model.

Advantages of Hybrid Cloud Computing

1. It is scalable
2. It is cost efficient

7
3. Offers better security
4. Offers greater flexibility

Disadvantages of Hybrid Cloud Computing

1. Infrastructure Dependency
2. Possibility of security breach through public cloud

The Three Service Models of Cloud Computing

1. SaaS 2. PaaS 3. IaaS

1. SaaS or Software as a Service is a model that gives quick access to cloud-based

web applications. The vendor controls the entire computing stack, which you can access
using a web browser. These applications run on the cloud and you can use them by a
paid licensed subscription or for free with limited access.
SaaS does not require any installations or downloads in your existing computing
infrastructure. This eliminates the need for installing applications on each of your
computers with the maintenance and support taken over by the vendor. Some known
example of SaaS includes Google G Suite, Microsoft Office 365, Dropbox, etc.
SaaS Benefits:
o Affordable – SaaS is affordable as it eliminates the costs involved in the
purchase, installation, maintenance and upgrades of computing hardware.
o Anywhere Accessibility – With SaaS, you can access the services from
anywhere using any device such as smartphones, which eliminates the
constraints set by on premise software.
o Ready to Use – You can quickly set up SaaS services so that they
become functional in no time. All it takes is that you sign up for the service
to get access to fast and powerful computing resources.

2. Platform as a Service or PaaS is essentially a cloud base where you can develop,
test and organize the different applications for your business. Implementing PaaS
simplifies the process of enterprise software development. The virtual runtime
environment provided by PaaS gives a favorable space for developing and testing
applications.
The entire resources offered in the form of servers, storage and networking are
manageable either by the company or a platform provider. Google App Engine and AWS
Elastic Beanstalk are two typical examples of PaaS. PaaS is also subscription based
that gives you flexible pricing options depending on your business requirements.
PaaS Benefits
o Minimal Development Time – PaaS reduces the development time since
the vendor provides all computing resources like server-side components,
which simplifies the process and improve the focus of the development
team.

8
o Multiple Programming Language Support – PaaS offers support for
multiple programming languages, which a software development company
can utilize to build applications for different projects.
o Enhanced Collaboration – With PaaS, your business can benefit from
having enhanced collaboration, which will help integrate your team
dispersed across various locations.

3. IaaS or Infrastructure as a Service is basically a virtual provision of computing

resources over the cloud. An IaaS cloud provider can give you the entire range of
computing infrastructures such as storage, servers, networking hardware alongside
maintenance and support.
Businesses can opt for computing resources of their requirement without the need
to install hardware on their premises. Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and
Google Compute Engine are some of the leading IaaS cloud service providers.
IaaS Benefits
o Minimize Costs – Deploying an IaaS cloud model eliminates the need to
deploy on premise hardware that reduces the costs.
o Enhanced Scalability – As the most flexible cloud computing model, IaaS
allows you to scale the computing resources up or down based on
demand.
o Simple Deployment – IaaS lets you easily deploy the servers, processing,
storage, and networking to make it up and running in no time.

Cloud computing advantages and disadvantages

Cloud computing is not necessarily cheaper than other forms of computing,
just as renting is not always cheaper than buying in the long term. If an application

9
has a regular and predictable requirement for computing services it may be more
economical to provide that service in-house.
Some companies may be reluctant to host sensitive data in a service that is
also used by rivals. Moving to a SaaS application may also mean you are using
the same applications as a rival, which may make it hard to create any competitive
advantage if that application is core to your business.

While it may be easy to start using a new cloud application, migrating

existing data or apps to the cloud may be much more complicated and expensive.
And it seems there is now something of a shortage in cloud skills with staff with
DevOps and multi-cloud monitoring and management knowledge in particularly
short supply.
