Horton has expanded its line of engine fans for heavy-duty applications with the launch of the HTEC 1800 (left). Constructed using
a proprietary thermoset composite material, the fan is available in diameters from 119 to 198 cm with five to 15 blades. A down-

COOLING TECHNOLOGY

All of the HTEC fans incorporate a structural material

engineered to deliver increased efficiency, a higher tem-
perature and speed rating, enhanced durability, corrosion
resistance, reduced fuel consumption, significant noise re-
duction and compatibility with Horton’s fan drive systems.
The HTEC material is a thermoset plastic rather than
the glass-filled nylon construction more commonly seen in
injected-molded fans. Rather than injecting material into a
die, a charge pattern of HTEC thermoset plastic is put into
two halves of a mold and then compressed together and
heated. This compression molding process bonds the mol-
ecules together more firmly and the result is a more durable
fan with less deflection than nylon and a higher strength-
to-weight ratio than nylon, steel or aluminum, with much
higher temperature capability — over 148°C, Horton said.
The HTEC 1800 fan can be specified with five to 15 blades
and in diameters of 119 to 198 cm. Standard and custom-
izable hub mountings are available, including straight and
tapered bores. The hub configuration allows for a range of
blade counts and results in a truly modular fan in which the
blades can be manufactured to the precise length required
by the application with no tip trimming needed to make it
fit — a key point since much of the noise reduction of a fan
is a result of the tip profile. Maximum fan tip speed for the
HTEC 1800 is 6705 m/sec, Horton said.
Manufactured at Horton’s Carmel, Indiana, USA, facility, the
