of earthmoving, roadbuilding and
materials handling equipment,
along with portable compressors,

should reach 90,115 units this
year. That would represent a 15%
increase on the 78,109 machines
sold in 2017 and a near doubling
of the market in India since the
trough of 2014 and 2015.
Off-Highway Research said
the previous peak in construction
equipment sales was 72,492 units
in 2011, so demand in India had
already surpassed that by the
end of 2017. The robust growth
and recent record demand has
been largely due to the Modi
government’s efforts to speed
up the pace of infrastructure
development.
The report said:“The surge
in demand in the first half of
2018 resulted from increased
activity in the construction and
mining sectors, and the continued
momentum following the GST
(national sales tax) rate reduction
in November 2017.”

According to Schell, engineering is still core to what
Rolls-Royce Power Systems does: the company has
a strong engine R&D organized in systems and in
engine programs, and a branch for electrification
and automation. “Rolls-Royce Power Systems
nowadays has some unique qualities: technically
sophisticated products; a very broad and exciting
range of applications; a very experienced and
committed engineering team and, not least, some
very good customer relations.
“Our market and product complexity is based
on a few key development pillars: having compliant
diesel engines for the emissions regulations
worldwide; working on alternative fuels, such as
gas in marine applications, or fuel cells; developing
hybrid systems for some applications, namely rail
and marine; and offering digitalization in the way
of connected devices.” As far as hybrid solutions are
concerned, the MTU hybrid PowerPack for railway
applications is now ready to be launched in series
production, and in 2019 the company will offer a
hybrid solution also for marine.
Digitalization and connected devices are
important topics for the service side of the
business. Jörn Lindstädt, director Global Customer
Support, said that maximum availability is
important across all applications despite their
different characteristics:“Product performance is
a must, but our customers also require global and
seamless support,” he said. “Our Service Of The
Future, or Customer Care 4.0 programs are based
on superior customer experience and a full stream of
data collection and analytics.” He pointed out the
company has more than 100,000 engines installed
in the field worldwide.
New service agreements for customers that
integrate new digital tools are managed by
Customer Care Centres – one in Friedrichshafen
in the same location as the Digital Solutions group
“Person-centric” apps unveiled
The first digital products that Rolls-Royce Power Systems’ Digital Solutions brought to the
market are the MTU-Go! Act and MTU Go! Manage apps, that were designed specifically
for individual applications of the MTU brand engines initially ranging from ships, to trains,
or power generation.
While Go! Manage is a platform meant for fleet managers, Go! Act is a person-centric
app tool to take action on product’s issues. Rolls-Royce Power Systems said that a further
app called Go! Care will be soon released for MTU’s authorized service dealers.

Components is ramping up its
production of common rail fuel injection systems
in the new plant officially opened in 2016 in
Deggendorf, Germany.
Investments in the development and production
of common rail systems started at the Liebherr plant
in Bulle, Switzerland, in 2008. Then the plan was to
supply Liebherr’s own engines with a key component
that was previously outsourced.
In the following years, the plan was adapted to
target the open market as well, so that Liebherr could
supply other engine makers with its own systems.
The outlay was a €45 million initial investment
for the Deggendorf plant alone. Maximilian
Schaut, managing director sales and finance of
Liebherr Components in Deggendorf, said that
this investment fell within a larger plan addressed
to the whole Liebherr Components Division; this
changed the face of the company, transforming it
into a premium supplier of diesel and gas engines
and a number of related components, including fuel
injection systems.
He said that Liebherr’s history in Deggendorf
started with the acquisition of a previous local
supplier of precision parts in 2012. “The decision
to build around this core competence for our future
business was made in 2015,” he said.
Liebherr’s managing director Engineering and
Production for the Common Rail Systems (CRS)
business unit, Richard Pirkl, said: “The new plant
covers an area of 32 000 m2, with 10 000 m2 dedicated
to production. The Deggendorf factory includes
development, manufacturing and assembly of the
common rail components, and is the administrative
headquarter of the CRS business unit.”
TWO MAJOR FAMILIES
The common rail systems by Liebherr are divided
into two major families: one for medium- and
heavy-duty applications with engine capacity
between 1.5 and 3 L per cylinder (covering EU

a working pressure up to 2200 bar. While the first
family proposes two injector variants, top and side

second family uses injectors with an integrated high-
pressure accumulator in combination with a five/
six piston pump version. Both high-pressure pumps
have a low-pressure G-rotor pump on board.

The ECUs are available in three sizes: for four and
six cylinder applications, up to eight cylinders and
up to twelve in stand-alone configuration. In master-
slave configuration Liebherr ECUs can support
engines up to 20 cylinders. All Liebherr ECUs can
integrate and control in parallel engine, exhaust gas
aftertreatment and fuel injection/common rail.
Software development, system validation and
integration as well as system calibration are carried
out in Bulle, the competence centre for Liebherr
diesel engines. According to Pirkl, one interesting
characteristic of the Liebherr injectors is the
three-way control valve that allows for a fast needle
closing and for very low switching leakage. Liebherr
injectors are also released for several fuel types,
among others Arctic fuel diesel and B30 biodiesel
fuel, as well as China fuels.
HIGH QUALITY PRODUCTION
Regarding the new plant, Pirkl said the facility
provides an air conditioned production floor,
essential for high-quality production of parts in the
micrometer precision range. “The production floor is
divided into three main areas: drilling, grinding, and
finishing/assembly; the assembly lines are located in
a clean room area, which is expected to double in
size in the near future - a second automated line is
close to completion and an assembly line for the LI3
injector platform is under construction, as well.”

from Bulle to Deggendorf mid-2019. By then, the
Deggendorf site will become Liebherr’s all-round
competence centre for fuel injection components
and will employ about 250 people, a sharp increase

high-quality and robustness of our products, our
common rail systems have been expanded to on-road
applications for heavy-duty trucks,” he added.
According to Delai, the expansion in the
on-road market is based on experience gained with
the agreement to deliver fuel injection systems
to Russia-based truck manufacturer Kamaz, an
agreement which is ramping up to reach series
production. Liebherr has started production for
off-road customers too and Delai said the same fuel
injection technology used for off-road applications
is generally applicable to on-road trucks. In terms
of market availability, Liebherr has projects as well
as commercial discussion on a worldwide level.
According to Delai, Asia today represents the main
market for Liebherr although the USA and Europe
are likely markets where it plans to expand its

The Futura is bright
Featuring key components from DAF and ZF and
with a new driveline, the next generation Futura
has been launched by VDL Bus & Coach.
A
ccording to Netherlands-based VDL,
the combination of the new Euro
6 DAF MX engines with the
ZF gearboxes is quieter, more economical
and contributes to a further reduction of
the total cost of ownership. The Futura
single decker variants are equipped with
the DAF MX-11 engine, available with
various power ratings. The engine is
paired with the ZF Traxon automated
manual gearbox as standard and the fully
automatic ZF Ecolife is an option.
The Futura double-decker is built
standard with the MX-13 engine in
combination with the ZF Traxon gearbox. A
new option for this variant is the combination of
a DAF MX-11 engine and the fully automatic ZF
Ecolife gearbox. This combination is suitable for
line service and regional transport as well as for
providing intercity connections, VDL said.
AN OPTIMUM DRIVELINE
According to VDL an optimum driveline is
available for every type of service. As standard the
VDL Futura two-axle single-decker is equipped
with the DAF MX-11 engine with 276 kW and
1,900 Nm. Compared to the previous generation,
this engine provides a 300 Nm torque increase
for an adequate reserve of power, even for tougher
conditions. Optional for the two-axle and standard
for the three-axle single-decker is the DAF MX-11
engine with 306 kW and 2,100 Nm.
For this variant, the maximum torque is already
available from 900 to 1,100 r/min. This contributes
to the elastic driving characteristic of the VDL
Futura. Optionally, the single-decker range is also
available with the MX11 with 335 kW and 2,300
Nm.
VDL said this version is suitable for operation
where extra power is required. The Futura FDD2
double-decker comes standard with an MX-13 with
395 kW and 2,600 Nm. The Futura double-decker
now can be delivered with the MX-11 with 335 kW
in combination with the fully automatic ZF Ecolife
gearbox making it suitable for line deployment or
intensive stop-and-go traffic.
Maintenance intervals of the MX-11 and MX-13
have been increased to 100,000 km. Mainly for high
annual kilometre operation there is the possibility
of an oil change interval of up to 200,000 km.
The engine block, cooling, air inlet, bearings and
pistons have been redesigned, and the compression
ratio increased. A new, more efficient turbo provides

Futura has been launched greater torque. The engine-driven components,
by VDL Bus & Coach. such as the oil, water and power steering pumps,
are continuously variable type and are only engaged
when they are needed reducing fuel and wear.
Depending on the power variant, the MX
engines have 50 Nm to 300 Nm of extra torque.
The combination of the 12 gears of the ZF Traxon
and the new rear axle reduction of 1:2.71 results
in an engine speed reduction of up to 100 r/min
at a cruising speed of 100 km/h. These measures
have contributed to a fuel efficiency improvement
of 3%.
The ZF AS Tronic has now been succeeded
by the ZF Traxon. The latest automated manual
gearbox contributes to lower fuel consumption,
features new functionalities and has a wide
deployment range. The Traxon has been developed
for the higher torques delivered by modern engines,
such as the DAF MX-11 and MX-13.
IMPROVED SMOOTHNESS
VDL said one important advance is that the loss
of tractive power during the shifting moment is
minimized. Sensors detect the speed for improved
smoothness of the shifting process. This boosts
comfort and ensures optimum acceleration. The
Traxon features ‘Hill start’, which assists the driver
when driving off on an upward slope. The tractive
power required to drive off quickly and comfortably
is calculated based on the steepness of the slope
and the weight of the vehicle. The Traxon also
features a manoeuvring mode to help during precise
operations, such as parking.
The fully automatic six-speed ZF Ecolife gearbox
is suited for low average speeds involving lots of
shifting, such as stop-and-go traffic. dpi

Looking for a problem
Will autonomous vehicles be viable?
A
utonomy is, along
with electrification,
one of the key
technological – and societal
– challenges that the global
commercial vehicle industry
is now coming to grips with.
But, in the case of Uber
and its autonomous truck
division – a division that grew
out of Uber’s $680 million
acquisition of start-up Otto a
couple of years ago – it’s no
longer a challenge; Uber has
announced that it will shutter
the truck division and will
focus instead upon testing
and developing self-driving
passenger cars.
Eric Meyhofer, head of
Uber Advanced Technology
Group, which oversees the
company’s autonomous
driving programmes, said:
“We’ve decided to stop
development on our self-
driving truck program and
move forward exclusively with
cars. We recently took the
important step of returning
to public roads in Pittsburgh,
and as we look to continue
that momentum, we believe
having our entire team’s
energy and expertise focused
on this effort is the best path
forward.”
This news comes at an
interesting time for Uber
and autonomous commercial
vehicles. In the case of the
former, times have been –
and this is a charitable view
– complex of late. Issues
with management style and,
more recently, the death of a
pedestrian in Arizona caused
by an Uber car being operated
in autonomous mode have
done much to take some of
the shine off the company.
And in the case of the latter,
once we have moved past the
wide-eyed amazement that
has – entirely reasonably –
occupied a lot of newsprint of
late – we are still at the stage of
trying to figure out quite why
we need an autonomous truck
in the first place. Problems
tend to pursue solutions but
for many, autonomy is still,
and looks likely to remain, a
solution desperately in search
of a problem.
SCIENCE FICTION
But Uber’s decision is still
one that is rather perplexing.
Indeed, the solution in search
of a problem accusation is – in
its case – mitigated somewhat
by the observation that, a
couple of years ago, it – along
with partner Anheuser-Busch
– trialled an autonomous
truck in Colorado which
delivered, successfully,
Budweiser. Thus, not only
did the technology work but,
just as importantly, it was a
technology proving exercise

that involved a significant US
brand. Moreover, Anheuser-
Busch has shown itself to
be a company that is not
technology averse; it has
placed a major order for both
Nikola hydrogen-electric
trucks as well as a smaller
order for the Tesla electric
product. A launch partner of
this size and this mindset does
not get much better.
So if this decision is not
predicated upon a technology
issue, what has driven it?
Despite the rather obvious
assertion that there is an
element of science fiction
surrounding autonomous
vehicles, these are optics which
are a bit misleading. The core
technologies that have enabled
these developments are, if not
prosaic, then certainly well
established. While the sum of
the parts here are undoubtedly
cutting edge those parts which
constitute the whole are very
much of the here and now.
So can we assume – and
here the caveat has to be that
assumptions are always tinged
with danger in the automotive
industry c.2018 – that Uber’s
decision is predicated less
upon technical viability
and more upon commercial
sustainability? We have no
idea what sort of hurdle rate
Uber demanded of its not
insignificant investment in

holds good – we can only
imagine that its assumed
return from the project fell
short. Commercial logic thus
demands that the project be
suspended.
SUSPICIOUS MINDS
We have long regarded
the pursuit of autonomous
technology – at least in the
truck space – with some
suspicion. Contrast it with
the development of electrified
powertrains – something
which does seem to have
a demonstrable if as yet
unquantifiable value – and it is
hard to see how the pursuit of
autonomous vehicles is going
to get us paid. Just because
the technology exists does not
make that same technology
commercially viable or
sustainable.
Uber’s decision is not
going to cause the pursuit of
autonomous trucks to end any
time soon. But is does serve
as a reminder that that which
underpins the truck industry,
the automotive industry and
ultimately any commercial
enterprise is very simple; it’s
return on investment. If you
build it, they may indeed
come. But how much they
will pay in the process is really

milestones
Company anniversary and production milestone for
AGCO Power. From Finland, Roberta Prandi reports
on a new family of engines in time for EU Stage 5.

F
or engine manufacturers 2018 is going to
be a turnaround point in the European
market. At the end of this year no diesel
engine compliant with EU Stage 4 emissions
regulations can be purchased anymore for use in
machines to be sold in the European Union market.
As of 2019, engines under 56 kW and above 130
kW power will have to comply with EU Stage 5
standards (from 2020 for engines between 56 and
130 Kw).
AGCO Power is facing this market shift with
the launch of a new engine family and with the
celebration of the company’s 75th anniversary and
the one millionth engine off the assembly lines.
Although AGCO Power is not yet available to
disclose details about the new diesel engine family,
the company’s senior vice president, Engineering
Worldwide, Dr. Helmut Endres, said:“AGCO Power
started its development for the Stage 5 a number
of years ago in order to be ready for the change.
High-quality engines have already been tested in
co-operation with our customers in the engine
laboratory and in different applications.” During
the event celebrating AGCO Power’s anniversary
on April 18, 2018, Endres announced that the first
prototype run for a six-cylinder engine of the new
family had just been successfully completed. In 75
years, AGCO Power moved from being an aircraft
engine factory in Linnavuori, Finland during World
War II, went through the years in the Valtra
group and finally became part of AGCO O in
2004 through the acquisition of Valtra.
INCREASED SALES PLAN
Today the company has capacity for thee
production of more than 100,000 diesel
engines per year for medium- and heavy-
duty mobile machines and generator
sets. Half of the production capacity is
in the Linnavuori plant, while the rest is
evenly split between Changzhou, China,
and Mogi das Cruzes, Brazil.

diesel within five years. There are plans to increase
engine sales to the non-captive market, where
AGCO Power already equips agricultural tractors
by companies such as JCB and Iseki, combines by
Sampo and forest machines such as Komatsu’s.
“AGCO Power devotes 7% of its sales in R&D
development, mainly concentrated in the Linnavuori
plant that is the centre for new research. We have
been pioneers of selective catalytic reaction (SCR)
technology in agricultural machines in 2008, and
we started developing our units for EU Stage 5 a
number of years ago,” said Tervala. “Stage 5 will
require the introduction of a diesel particulate filter
(DPF) together with an SCR system. DPFs are
a new experience for AGCO Power but we have
accumulated, already, 50,000 operating hours with
prototypes in the field.
“We have adopted a very clever remote monitoring
system for our prototypes, which allows us to follow
them closely and garner experience.” Pre-series
production for the engines with the new exhaust gas
aftertreatment were due to start before this summer.
DESIGN IMPROVEMENTS
Current AGCO Power engine production
is concentrated mainly on three-, four-, and
six-cylinder engines, produced in Finland for
heavy-duty applications; three- and four-cylinder
medium-duty in China; and three- to six-cylinder
Tier 3 engines in Brazil, mainly for the local market.

limited for all units, as well as the cylinder head –
with different versions for two valve and four valve
models.The flywheel arrangement differs between
heavy-duty engines – that feature a separate flywheel
housing – and medium-duty engines with a flywheel
integrated in the cylinder block.
Tervala said there’s a target to reduce cost for
medium-duty engines by design improvements of
the units and localization of suppliers. For example,
AGCO Power uses a Bosch common rail system,
purchased locally so specs differ for the engines from
different plants. The same happens with pistons by
German manufacturer KS Kolbenschmidt, which
are purchased locally. The Linnavuori plant is highly
automated with 48 robots used in the high-volume
manufacturing lines and 100 around the entire
facility that covers 35000 m2. All engines rolling off
the assembly lines are subjected to a hot test run.
Recently a test cell for Compliance of Production
(COP) has been installed; here sample engines are
tested with their aftertreatment systems and the
results delivered to the authorities for compliance
with the new emissions standards. The Linnavuori
engine laboratory hass 16 test cells with plans to
increase the capacity of a cold test lab.
Part of the production is for power generation
applications – including gen-sets, water pumps, and
customized power units. This is currently less than
1000 engines per year and, in the case of standard
gen-set engines, production goes mainly to Valtra.
Tervala revealed that soon there will be Massey-
Ferguson-branded gen-sets. Finally, AGCO Power
has a department for the remanufacturing of about
1500 engines a year and makes over 10000 gearboxes
annually for a snowmobile application. dpi

Lift expected for
Indian crane sector
A positive outlook is expected for the long-term with a growth in sales

n the Indian
construction equipment
industry the mobile
crane is the third largest
selling equipment type in the
market and has accounted for
8-13% of total construction
equipment sales in the past
five years. Sales peaked in
2011 but continued to plunge
thereafter with demand
reducing to less than half of
peak sales in 2014 and fell
further by 7% in 2015. After
four years of decline, the
market grew by 12% to 5,492
units in 2016.
CRAWLER CRANES
The market for crawler
cranes is currently served
by ten major suppliers with
four local manufacturers.
There were only two
manufacturers of crawler
cranes until 2008, Tata
Hitachi (formerly Telcon)
and Titagarh Wagons.
Tusker Cranes (formerly
ABG Cranes) was third to
begin production in 2009
and was joined by Action
Construction Equipment
(ACE) and Kobelco Cranes
in 2011. Sany also started
local manufacturing of crawler
cranes in 2012 but suspended
production in 2013 due to
the fall in demand. Tusker
Cranes is no longer an active
manufacturer. The crawler
crane market was led by
Kobelco Cranes in 2016,
while other suppliers included
ACE, Sany, Fuwa, Liebherr,
Terex and Tata Hitachi.
Manitowoc, XCMG, Hitachi
Sumitomo and Zoomlion are
the other active suppliers. The
industrial crane market is very
small and is dominated by the
local manufacturers TIL and
Escorts.
Imported industrial
cranes are generally not sold
in the country, although
Grove has been active for

TRANSFLUID ACQUIRES BELLMARINE

To continue the expansion of its electric propulsion products,
Transfluid acquired 100% of the shares in IDTechnology B.V. No
financial details were provided.
IDTechnology develops and markets electric marine propulsion
systems for pleasure boats and commercial vessels under the
Bellmarine brand.
The company will continue to operate from The Netherlands
and maintain a distinct brand identity, Transfluid said. Marien
Schoonen, the founder of Bellmarine, will remain with the company
and focus on sales and product development.
The move is expected to provide an array of solutions for electric
and hybrid powertrains for the marine market, Transfluid said.
Headquartered in Gallarate, Italy, Transfluid has developed a
range of hybrid and electric propulsion systems and production of
the Tier G permanent magnet electric motor, targeted at marine
propulsion and on- and off-road vehicle applications.

chance to witness first hand a state-
of-the-art concept vehicle used
not only for transportation but as a
stationary compartment too. Here is
her first-hand account.
M
y first reaction when seeing the Snap
autonomous electric vehicle by Rinspeed
was: “I want to use one too!” The futuristic
concept is a sort of sandwich-vehicle composed of
two parts: the bottom one, an integrated chassis
hosting all the drive elements and sensors, and the
top one that is more of an office space than a vehicle
cabin.
The manufacturer – Switzerland-based Rinspeed
AG – describes the vehicle as the combination of
an intelligent chassis called a skateboard and a
superstructure called a pod. The innovation lies
in the fact that skateboard and pod do not have
to spend their service life together, even if they
definitely could. Instead, they come together as
temporary partners for different periods of the day.
A VARIETY OF USES
According to Rinspeed, the Snap pursues the solution
of separating the intelligent and thus quickly ageing
and proportionately expensive components (which
are combined in the intelligent skateboard chassis)
from the long-lasting vehicle components which are
hosted in the pod. While the skateboard is always
in use, pods are loaded and used as needed and, in
addition to mobility tasks, they can also serve other
purposes and be used stationary as an integral
component of smart cities, for example. Doctor’s

pods, which will come to the patient for routine
check-ups, and sauna or party pods for recreational
pleasures in the backyard, are only two of the
possible uses indicated by the manufacturer for this
concept vehicle.
In other, simpler words, the Snap can be used
for the transportation of people or goods, but one
day your office could be a pod - and beware: the
interior of this first development is smart and utterly
comfortable. In the morning you ‘go’ to work in
your pod, and summon a skateboard to take you
to where your job that day is: a customer’s location,
a partner facility, or anywhere else. Meetings can
be held in the pods stationed anywhere and, in my
fantasies, I already see myself working in a park or at
the seaside summoning the skateboard for the ride
home at the end of the day.
A RANGE OF TECHNOLOGIES
The concept vehicle Snap is not meant to remain
a one-off, but is to be developed to production
readiness in future. Rinspeed defines the
“production” as a small fleet, which is to serve as a
proof of concept and is slated be used worldwide. In
parallel to the mechanical-electronic development
of the vehicle, the ecosystem is to be developed

and programmed, which will later control the
entire systematic of need, availability, upkeep and
settlement.
The vehicle is 4.68 m long and 1.96 m wide and
weighs approximately 1 700 kg; it is powered by an
electric motor with 28 kW continuous output and 51
kW maximum output. The maximum speed is over
80 km/h and the autonomy is 100 km.
The Snap incorporates a range of technologies for
autonomous and electric drive by ZF Friedrichshafen,
as, for example, an Intelligent Dynamic Driving
Chassis: a full set of sensors including radars, cameras,
and LiDAR; and the ZF ProAI central computer.
FUEL CELLS IN
COMMERCIAL
VEHICLES
Separation and filtration, compression,
humidification, cooling, and monitoring: Mahle’s
contribution to technology readiness of fuel cells
R
eferring to the market for fuel cell drives in
commercial vehicles, Mahle said a significant
increase of vehicles using these systems
is expected within the next five years, particularly
from Asian manufacturers.
According to Jörg Rückauf, Mahle’s head of
product development Filtration and Engine
Peripherals, fuel cell solutions for commercial
vehicles offer great potential to save weight and
extend the cruising range in comparison with
battery-powered solutions. Thus, fuel cell concepts
can be an attractive option for long-distance
hauling, requiring heavy loads and large cruising
ranges.
One of the challenges of designing commercial
vehicles with a fuel cell drive is the high hydrogen
storage pressures of around 700 bar. Extreme
requirements in terms of thermal and media
management and the sensitivity of fuel cell stacks
to contamination and harmful gases in the air flow
are also to be considered and require a perfectly
harmonized arrangement of the fuel cell
peripherals.
For example, the air management of fuel
cells places extremely high demands on the
components and harmful gases and particles
need to be separated reliably. For this purpose,
Mahle is developing a new multilayer filter
medium in which a substrate material
ensures mechanical stability, a particulate

the vehicle is equipped also with ZF’s modular Semi-
Trailing Arm Rear Suspension mSTARS. The driveline
is completed by a ZF electric axle and integrated
brake control.
ALL INDUSTRIES
Rinspeed pointed out that the advantage of this
type of vehicle against other autonomous vehicles
as, for example robo-taxis, is that as long as such
vehicles only take people to their destinations, their
use is limited and when daily passenger transport
filter layer removes sodium chloride, a molecular
layer prevents ammonia from entering the fuel
cell, an activated carbon layer absorbs unwanted
hydrocarbons, and an additional, specially
impregnated activated carbon layer adsorbs sulfur
dioxide, hydrogen sulphide, and nitrogen dioxide.
A LARGE-SCALE PROJECT
Fuel cells are also sensitive to oil admixtures,
therefore the electric compressor used to compress
the supply of air flow must be oil-free. The
compressor developed by Mahle uses special high-
speed roller bearings lubricated with grease, which
are prevented from releasing grease towards the
fuel cell by means of a gasket also developed by
Mahle. Rückauf said that this development was part
of one of the biggest projects in this field supported
by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs
and Energy

Chinese company claims breakthrough for

he dramatically named Strolling Dragon
– a mighty, un-manned Chinese heavy-
duty truck - is the pride and joy of Suning
Logistics and recently completed a driving test
milestone in Shanghai.
Strolling Dragon is the largest un-manned truck
in Suning’s automated fleet and can operate without
human input within pre-programmed parameters.
According to the company, a subsidiary of Suning
Holdings Group, the Dragon is the first self-driving
truck developed by a Chinese e-commerce company
to pass logistics campus tests and highway-scenario
road tests in the country.
Unsurprisingly Zhang Jindong, chairman of
Suning Holdings Group, is jubilant.
“The success of Strolling Dragon’s self-driving
tests is a groundbreaking accomplishment for Suning
and represents another step forward in our Online-

“The promise of automation solutions will not
only boost efficiency in Suning’s logistics operations
but also benefit the industry, and consumers, by

self-driving vehicles is the influential, Paris-based
International Transport Forum (ITF) which is an
inter-governmental organisation with 59 member
countries. It acts as a think tank for transport policy
and organises the Annual Summit of transport

It has published a string of concerns and
recommendations about the increasing automation
of trucks and cars and how it could affect road
safety and which security vulnerabilities need to be
addressed with the rise of self-driving vehicles.
Among its various findings the ITF said that
claims of more than a 90% reduction in road traffic
deaths resulting from automation eliminating
crashes linked to human error are untested. It added:
“It seems likely that the number of road casualties
will decrease with automation, but crashes will not
disappear.
“In certain circumstances, more crashes may occur
among “average” drivers that are not prone to risky
behavior. This is particularly likely in circumstances
where drivers must take over from automated driving
in emergency situations,” it said.
The ITF also claimed that a shared responsibility
for driving among automated systems and humans
may make decision making more complex and that
humans have an advantage over single sensor -based
automated systems in many contexts.

manufacturer of sprayers,
planters and other agricultural
machinery in Las Rosas,
Argentina. The company also
has a plant in Canoas, Brazil.
Pla was founded in 1975
and is thought to be the first
company to produce self-
propelled sprayers in Latin
America. The company has
450 employees and exports to
four continents.
Pla will operate as normal,
keeping its name and
trademark. Financial details
were not disclosed.

VW hopes to star in Bolivia
Volkswagen has introduced the VW Constellation truck family in Bolivia.
The new line, from 15 to 31 tonnes, was launched in the city of Santa Cruz.
Among the models are the VW Constellation 15.180, 17.250, 17.320,
19.320, 24.320 and 31.320. All of the truck family reach Euro 3 emissions
regulations, the company said. Bolivia already uses the Volkswagen Worker
trucks, especially for beverage distribution. All of the models use Cummins
engines apart from the 15.180 which has a MWM unit. The Constellation
family is produced in Resende city, Brazil.
