THE USE OF TRANSLATION

IN LANGUAGE LEARNING

1. Introduction

Language learning is an activity that process from begins of birth and continues
throughout life. Students learning language for communicate and express their feeling,
ideas, and experiences. Also establish relationship with family, friends, and society. In
academic world, translation is one of method in learning language. Newmark (1988: 5)
who defines translation as “rendering the meaning of a text into another language in the
way that the author intended the text” but in generally translation can be defined as a
communication of transferring meaning, ideas, or message from the source language (SL)
to the target language (TL).
Nowadays mastering minimum two languages is a must. The use of translation can
help students to learning another language from their mother language, and also can help
students to communicate with people around the world. Not only in communicate,
translation also has many benefit for student in language learning. This paper has a
purpose to inform the readers every benefit from use translation in learning language.

2. Discussion

2.1 Benefit of translation in language learning

Translation help student to communication, transferring meaning, and express


their feeling, ideas, or message from one language (L1) to another language (L2).
Translation has many benefits for student to learning a foreign language. According to
As Stern (1992), translation is an important thing in language learning. Because it’s
help students to realize the similarities and differences between Source Language
(SL) and Target Language (TL), it is make students understand the language system
better.
A translation also make students to develop three important qualities to all
language learning; accuracy, clarity and flexibility. Those three qualities make student
learn, how to search an appropriate word to transfer the meaning of message that they
want to convey. (Alan Duff – in Mart, 2013)
Moreover translation helps students to improve writing, reading, listening, and
their speaking skills. Because when student who are practicing a translation, students
must be force to practice with them in school. (Malmkjaer – in Mart, 2013)
Translation is sometimes regarded as the fifth skill, in addition to the other
four skills (reading, writing, speaking, listening) and, therefore, can be a valuable tool
for developing and enhancing communicative competence. (Ross – in Guerra, 2014)
besides, as Cook (2010, p.20) put it, "being able to translate is a major component of
bilingual communicative competence".

3. Conclusion

Translation is an activity which is help students to communicate, transferring


meaning, expressing their ideas, message and experience to all people around the world.
With form writing, reading, speaking, and listening. The use of translation in learning
language help students in many ways, and the use translation in learning language can be
meaningful and better comprehension in foreign language proficiency. The use of
translation also helps students to easy learn a new language. Beside that translation help
students developing their important qualities (accuracy, clarity, and flexibility) also
improving their writing, reading, speaking, and listening skills. Moreover translation help
students to understand the language system in better way as well as developing and
enhancing communicative competence.
