Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 3 years in the first instance.

Applications are invited for a Post-Doctoral Researcher to join a programme seeking to develop new high-performance materials amenable to additive layer manufacturing. The
post will be based in the Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre in the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy at the University of Cambridge and will have close links
with industrial partners within the aerospace sector.

Additive manufacturing techniques are creating a revolution in the production of high value-added engineering products. Specifically, the techniques provide the opportunity for
increasingly complex component geometries, beyond those that can be produced by conventional processing routes. Consequently, there is great interest in utilising these
techniques in the aerospace sector to deliver components with enhanced in-service performance. However, the thermo-mechanical conditions experienced during additive layer
processing are markedly different to those encountered in more conventional fabrication routes. As such, problems are commonly encountered when attempting to build high
performance materials via additive methods. These issues lead to unacceptably high deficits in material properties, a high concentration of defects, increased anisotropy and
prohibitive scrap rates. Therefore, there is a great need to design and develop new high-performance alloys that can be successfully fabricated through these methods.

The post holder will be required to work independently and as part of a team, as well as be able to perform suitable experimental and modelling activities to progress the research.
The work will include the characterisation of alloys using: scanning and transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric
analysis. Complementary modelling will also be performed using thermodynamic simulation software. The post holder will be expected to communicate their findings through
journal publications, conference contributions and technical meetings with the industrial collaborators. It is also expected that the post holder will be able to manage their own
progress against predefined milestones and deliverables.

Applicants must have a PhD in Materials Science or a related Engineering discipline and have experience of experimental metallurgical research and have expertise in
Metallography, Electron Microscopy, X-ray Diffraction, Thermal Analysis and Computational Thermodynamics. It is desirable for applicants to have knowledge of Ni-base
superalloys, Co-base superalloys or intermetallic materials and be able to demonstrate their ability to communicate their research through a track record of relevant publications
and conference contributions. Experience of working with industrial organisations would also be advantageous.

Starting from the 1st October, or earlier by agreement, funding is available for up to 36 months subject to the successful completion of a probationary period/industrial milestones.
Applications must be made online via the University's website before 9th August 2019.
