The Advanced Forming Research Centre (AFRC) and the Space Mechatronic Systems Technology Lab within the Department of Design, Manufacture and Engineering
Management is seeking to recruit a Research Assistant in Smart Manufacturing Factory Design for application within construction. The Research Assistant will work as part of a
team on a smart manufacturing factory blue print design project funded by the European Commission, The team comprises of both University and Industry staff, and whilst based
within the University the Research Assistant will be expected to visit the partner institutions across Europe, as required. It is expected that this work may also be expanded into
mechatronic system development for new automated manufacturing of innovative renovation packages for multiple European countries and showcasing. The Research Assistant
will research existing relevant virtual reality technologies in manufacturing using robotic systems and other technologies; thoroughly investigate the innovative systematic approach
using these systems or solutions to generate the next generation automation in manufacturing renovation packages. The role will require the Research Assistant to work with
virtual reality tool to model the manufacturing systems, robotics and develop simulation models.

To be considered for the role educated, you will be to a minimum of Degree level within a relevant discipline, or you will have relevant industrial experience in addition to a relevant
Degree. . You will have experience of manufacturing system, factory design, robotic task scheduling and planning, or other automation system based planning. You will have
experience of planning and simulating a factory. You will have an ability to write reports and papers for publication and you will have sufficient breadth and/or depth of knowledge in
smart manufacturing, robotic systems or automated manufacturing system design and construction for manufacturing ideally. You will have excellent interpersonal and
communication skills, with an ability to listen, engage and persuade, and to present complex information in an accessible way to a range of audiences and have an ability to work
autonomously and as part of a multi-disciplinary and/or cross-disciplinary team.

Whilst not essential for the role, applications are welcomed from candidates with: experience in broad manufacturing, industrial robotics, automation; experience of building and
integrating a manufacturing system with robot or other equipment within an industrial environment; and/or broad knowledge of factory design, planning and the challenges in
developing their support systems. Candidate with system level design, research and industrial experience will also be welcome to apply.
