Types of tasks and questions for Midterm, 08.12.2020

All topics of LECTURES 1-13 are included in

the Midterm exam.

The examples of types of tasks and questions are following :

1. (10%) Let us consider the following first order differential equation:

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
(a) Reduce this differential equation to the separable differential equa-
tion; or to homogeneous differential equation; or to differential equation
of the form XXXXXXXXXXX
(b) Applying the method of separation of variables (or applying suit-
able substitutions or change of variables; or XXXXX) find a general so-
lution of the considered differential equation

1. (10%) Let us consider the following linear inhomogeneous first order

differential equation:
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
(a) Find a general solution of this differential equation;
(b) Find a solution of the following initial value problem for this linear
of differential equation.

1. (10%) Let us consider the following Bernuolli differential equation:

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
(a) Using the suitable change of variables reduce this differential equa-
tion to the linear differential equation;
(b) Find a general solution of the reducible differential equation;
(c) Find a general solution of the considered Bernuolli differential
equation.

1. (10%) Let us consider the differential equation:

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

(a) Prove that this differential equation is exact;

(b) Find a function u(x, y) such that the differential equation can be
written in the form du = 0 ;
(c) Find a general solution of the considered differential equation.

1. (10%) Let us consider the differential equation:

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

(a) Prove that this differential equation is not exact;

(b) Prove that there exists an integrating factor for this differential
equation depending on x or y;
(c) Find the integrating factor;
(d) Find a general solution of the considered differential equation.

1. (10%) Let us consider the linear homogeneous differential equation

of the second order:

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

(a) Show that the roots of the characteristic equation for this differ-
ential equation are complex (or real and distinct; or real repeated); find
these roots;
(b) Find two linear independent solutions of this homogeneous differ-
ential equation; apply Wronskian criterion of the linear independence of
solutions of the homogeneous DE to prove linear independence;
(c) Find a general solution of the differential equation.

1. (10%) Let us consider the linear inhomogeneous differential equa-

tion of the second order with special inhomogeneous term:

XXXXXXXXXXXXX = Pn (x) exp(αx) cos(βx)

(a) Find two linear independent solutions of the homogeneous DE

XXXXXXXXXXXXX = 0; apply Wronskian criterion of the linear in-
dependence of solutions of the homogeneous DE to prove linear indepen-
dence;
(b) Find a general solution of XXXXXXXXXXXXX = 0;
(c) Applying the method of undetermined coefficients find a particular
solution of the considered inhomogeneous differential equation ;
(d) Find a general solution of the inhomogeneous considered DE.

1. (10%) Let us consider the inhomogeneous linear differential equa-
tion of the second order:

XXXXXXXXXX = f (x),

where f (x) is a continuous function.

(a) Find two linear independent solutions of the homogeneous DE:
XXXXXXXX = 0; here apply Wronskian criterion of the linear indepen-
dence of solutions of the homogeneous DE to prove linear independence;
(b) Find a general solution of the homogeneous DE: XXXXXXX = 0;
(c) Applying the variation of parameters method find a general solu-
tion of the considered inhomogeneous differential equation:
XXXXX = f (x).
