Convictions of
‘angel of death’
nurse appealed
THE murder convictions of a nurse
dubbed the “angel of death” have been
referred to the Court of Appeal.
Colin Norris, 44, was found guilty in
2008 by a majority of murdering four
women and attempting to murder another
by injecting them with insulin.
The four women who died – Ethel Hall,
Bridget Bourke, Doris Ludlam and Irene
Crookes – plus the fifth woman were all
elderly inpatients on orthopaedic wards in
Leeds where Norris worked as a nurse.
After reviewing the case, the Criminal
Cases Review Commission (CCRC) has
decided to refer all five convictions to the
Court of Appeal.
It said: “The CCRC considered new
expert evidence presented by Mr Norris’s
representatives.
“This new expert evidence explored
recent developments in a complex area
where scientific understanding is still
developing.
“As a result of the new expert evidence,
the CCRC has concluded that there is a real
possibility that the Court of Appeal will
decide that Mr Norris’s conviction for the
murder or attempted murder of one or
more of the four patients is unsafe.”
Norris – who was born in Glasgow – was
found guilty of four counts of murder and a
single count of attempted murder after a
five-month trial at Newcastle Crown Court.
He was sentenced to life imprisonment
with a minimum term of 30 years.
The case against him was wholly
circumstantial and heavily reliant on expert
opinion evidence.
Experts have now agreed that the
hypoglycaemia in four of the women may
be accounted for by natural causes.
Whisky exports
down by £1bn
EXPORTS of Scotch whisky fell by
more than £1.1 billion in 2020 to the
lowest level in a decade, according
to an industry body.
The Scotch Whisky Association
(SWA) blamed the twin impact of
coronavirus and the 25 per cent US
export tariff for the drop.
Exports dropped 23% by value to
£3.8 billion in 2020, the association
said, with the value and volume of
exports to most of the drink’s top 10
markets falling.
Hospitality closures and travel
restrictions affecting airport retail
led to export values falling in 70% of
the global markets for Scotland’s
national drink, compared to 2019.

THE population of central Africa was
decimated by a deadly epidemic around
1,500 years ago, according to research.
Scientists say it may have been
triggered by the same bacteria that
caused the Justinian Plague that claimed
an estimated 100 million lives and led
to the downfall of the Roman Empire.
Bantu-speaking communities in the
Congo rainforest underwent a major
population crash in the period from
1,600 to 1,400 years ago, suggest the
findings of the new study published in
the journal Science Advances.
The discovery revises the population
history of seven African countries
today: Cameroon, Central African
Republic, Democratic Republic
of the Congo, Republic of the Congo,
Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, and
Angola.
The new findings also challenge the
belief that the settlement of Central
Africa by Bantu-speaking people was a
continuous process from about 4,000
years ago until the start of the
transatlantic slave trade in the 16th
century.
Professor Koen Bostoen, of Ghent
University in Belgium, said: “Our
results show this initial wave
of Bantu-speaking early Iron Age
communities had largely vanished
from the Congo rainforest region by
600 CE.”

met again with the members of the Red Army

It was not the surprise of hearing the Song

pause. It was not my aching calves (and who

transported back to childhood and the
dimmest of memories.
Continuing the walk, my brain insistently
protested that I had not only seen the Red
Army Choir but in concert with Andy
Stewart. This led me to believe that a period
of ingesting dodgy substances in student flats

caught up with me. Either that or I had
cooked the wrong mushrooms for my
