SECTION: (1) INTRODUCTION

1.1 INTRODUCTION:

This report represents the basic structural design criteria, design approach, and the
properties of materials to be used in the Design Services for canopy design. This report
incorporates codes minimum structural design requirements and standards requirements to
ensure safety, stability, durability and economy of the design of the mentioned project.

1.2 DESIGN CONSIDERATION:

The proposed structural system consists of metal canopy supported on isolated RC

footings.
All possible factors, that may affect the structural design, have been considered such as:
1- The structural system capability of transmitting vertical and horizontal acting loads on
the canopy safely to the earth layers.
2- Full coordination between the structural system and architectural layout in order to
satisfy the item functional and aesthetical requirements.
3- Effect of soil properties on canopy members.
4- Numerical modeling using SAP2000 has been conducted.
5- Different straining actions using SAP2000 has been extracted.
6- Ultimate Design of structure elements has been conducted.

SECTION: (2) CODES, STANDARDS AND SOFTWARE

2.1 DESIGN CODES AND STANDARDS:

Structural design, analysis, calculations, design, drawings and recommendations will be

based on the following codes, standards and references:
 AISC 360-10 American Institute of Steel Construction.
 ACI 318M–11 American Concrete Institute.
 ASTM - American Society for Testing and Materials.
 CRSI - Concrete Reinforcing Steel Institute.
 SBC-301 TO 306C- Saudi Building Code.
 ASCE7-05 - American Society of Civil Engineers.
 UBC97 Uniform Building Code 1997.

2.2 APPLICABLE COMPUTER SOFTWARE:

Structural design and analysis will be created by the following computer software:
1- SAP2000 v21.2.0 Canopy Analysis performed by Finite Element Method.
2- PROKON V2.6.

SECTION: (3) STRUCTURAL MATERIALS

3 MATERIAL AND STRESSES:

3.1 CONCRETE:
The characteristics of concrete cylinder compressive strength after 28 days (fc') shall not be
less than the following:
 All concrete members 28 MPa.
 Unreinforced concrete 20 MPa
The above mentioned stresses require a mix design to realize a target mean strength equal to
the characteristic strength plus the safety margin. A quality assurance technique must be
followed before starting the works and during construction to make sure that the required
strength is constantly maintained. Ready mix concrete is preferable for the footings.
3.2 REINFORCIMENT STEEL:
High Yield steel “T”
ASTM A 615 Grade 60 deformed bars ( fy = 420 MPa).
All Reinforcing bars shall be in conformance with the manual of standard practice for
detailing reinforced concrete structure (ACI 315 latest edition).
3.3 STRUCTURAL STEEL MATERIALS:
Hot-rolled structural shapes:
ASTM A36/A36M
Plates:
ASTM A36/A36M
Fy: Minimum yield stress 36 ksi (250 MPa).
Material test reports or reports of tests made by the fabricator or a testing laboratory shall
constitute sufficient evidence of conformity with one of the ASTM standards.
3.4 BOLTS:
Bolt Grade 8.8: SAE J429 Grade 5; ASTM A 325.
Fy: Minimum yield stress (640 MPa).

3.5 ANCHOR BOLTS:

ASTM F568 Grade Class 4.8 Suppliers, Manufacturers
Fy: Minimum yield stress (340 MPa).

SECTION: (4) DESIGN LOADS, GROUP LOADING

4.1.
1. APPLIED LOADS:
 Dead Loads (DL):
Dead loads include the canopy own weight including weight of all elements, permanent frames, and
all other permanent construction.
The basic weights of various materials being considered in the design are as follows:

 Material Specific Weight:

- Reinforced Concrete 24 KN/m3
- Plain Concrete 22 KN/m3
- Steel Structure 78.5 KN/m3
- Weight of canopy covers (PE SHADE CLOTH) 325GSM.

 Wind Load (WL):

- The canopy location is in eastern province.
- Basic wind speed, V 152KM/hr = 94.45 mph SBC301 Figure 6.4-1.
- Exposure Categories assumed as a worst condition Exposure D.
- Importance factor for miscellaneous structures is Iw =1.00 UBC97 table 16-K.
- Pressure coefficients for primary frames and systems (Cq) UBC97 table 16-H.

 Live loads (LL):

The assumed live load due to erection = 0.150KN as a point load.
It was applied at outer corners and mid of canopy as shown in the applied loads
4.2.
2. LOAD COMBINATIONS:
