A Semi-Detailed Lesson Plan in English 9


I. Objectives
At the end of the discussion, the Grade 9 learners are expected to:
a. infer thought, feelings, or ideas expressed in the poem “the Road Not
Taken”;
b. describe and identify the different figures of speech (personification,
metaphor, irony, and hyperbole) used in the poem “The Road Not
Taken”;
c. construct sentences using figures of speech;
d. make a composition about their ambitions in life, using figures of
speech; and
e. value the importance of individualism.

II. Subject Matter


Topic: Poetry
Focus: Figures of Speech
(Personification, Metaphor, irony, and Hyperbole)
Springboard: “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost

Materials: PowerPoint presentation, boxes, chalk and chalkboard

III. Procedure

A. Pre-Reading
1. Motivation
The presenter provides two boxes: one is wrapped with colorful
paper and the other is wrapped with crumpled newspaper. Have the
students choose between the two and ask them give their reason for their
choice.

2. Vocabulary Building
Have the students answer the following questions provided by the
presenter for vocabulary development. The following are the words taken
from the poem “The Road Not Taken”:
 diverged
 undergrowth
 trodden
 sigh

B. During Reading
Have the students read the poem. The first two stanzas will be read
by the boys and the last two stanzas will be read by the girls.

C. Post-Reading
The presenter asks the following questions to check for
comprehension:
1. How many roads are mentioned in the poem?
2. What roads are those?
3. Which road did the traveler take? What is his reason for his
choice?
4. If you were the traveler, are you going to take the same road or
are you going to take the road traveled by many? What makes
you decide to take that road?
5. What could be the theme of the poem?

1. Discussion
The presenter discusses the poem in connection with the figures of
speech (personification, metaphor, irony, and hyperbole) used in the
poem and gives a description and examples for each.

2. Guided Practice
Have the students identify what figures of speech are used in the
sentences provided by the presenter. Have the students give examples
of each figure of speech discussed.

IV. Evaluation
Have the students make a composition about their ambitions in life using
figures of speech. The composition will be graded by the following criteria:

V. Assignment
Have the students look for 5-10 advertisements or commercials using
figures of speech and identify what kind of figure of speech it is.
