STEEL
MAKING
The only steel mill in Singapore, NatSteel has one of the
most energy-efficient steel making operations in the world.
Typical steel mills operate electric arc furnaces using more
than 400 kilowatt hours of energy to produce a tonne of
steel. NatSteel does the same with 30% less energy.

Melting Process

Processed metal waste is melted in the electric

arc furnace with fuel oil burners and high
voltage current, enriched by oxygen jetting.

Chemistry Refinement and

Temperature Control

Molten steel is transferred to the 80-tonne

Ladle Furnace for chemistry refinement and
temperature control.

Continuous Casting

Refined molten steel flows through a 4-strand

high speed caster. Billets are casted and
are directly hot charged to the rolling mill,
resulting in fuel oil savings.

STEEL
ROLLING
At the Merchant Bar Mill, billets are heated in a reheating
furnace and rolled through a sequence of rolling stands
which progressively reduce the billets to the final sizes of
reinforcement bars through an automated process. NatSteel
is capable of using Micro Alloy or Tempcore heat treatment
process to produce high strength reinforcing bars which are
highly malleable and weldable.

Reheat Furnace

From the meltshop, an automated conveyor

system transfers billets into the reheat furnace
for rolling process, reducing the heat loss
required for reheating and rolling.

Rolling Stands

A sequence of fully automated and water-

cooled roll stands that gradually reduce billets
to required sizes.

Finished Products

Billets are rolled into reinforcement bars.

Small diameters rods are also produced at fast
design speeds with precise tolerance control
using a six-pass bar block.

products delivered to customers

• The company’s products are certified to national and international standards for local use as
well as export to numerous overseas markets

NatSteel has a rigourous quality checking and assurance process to

ensure the quality of its steel products delivered to customers. This is to
avoid potential project delays or consequential costs resulting from the
use of non-complying building materials.

NatSteel supplies steel materials in accordance to current standards

such as SS560, BS4449 and is also certified to other international
standards by certification bodies such as SIRIM, SNI, BIS, SLS and ACRS
for export to numerous overseas markets.

The certification scheme for continuous production

consists of three stages:

1. Suitability testing
This ensures that the producer (NatSteel in this instance)
has the capability and resources to produce reinforcing
steel in accordance with the requirements specified in
the product standards.

2. Internal inspection by the producer
This ensures that the level of quality remains satisfactory
with time through continuous internal inspection of
production by the producer.

3. Inspection and supervision by an external body

External inspection and supervision is carried out
at maximum intervals of six months, to check the
compliance of continuous inspection of the conditions
of production.
