For some time now I have been thinking about the fact that while most in the
What’s Inside Enneagram community seem to agree that and represent the core
emotions associated with the body types and the head types, respectively,
there appears to be a lack of consensus about the core emotion connected to
the heart types.
In what follows, I hope to lay out some of the different conceptions of the heart types’ core
emotion with the intention of starting a dialogue about this issue that can lead to some clarity
about this question that is so central to an understanding of the Enneagram system.
I believe that too often in the Enneagram community individual theorists and authors come up
with a particular definition of some aspect of Enneagram theory and just move ahead as if their
definition were true, without accounting for differences between theories. This leads to a
confusing situation in which we have several different definitions or perceptions of one thing.
How do we promote the Enneagram as a solid growth tool when its strongest adherents can’t
agree about its basic definitions?
In posing the following questions then about one such situation – the lack of a common
understanding of the core emotional issue of the heart types – I hope to begin a respectful
dialogue that can evolve into a shared view of this important aspect of Enneagram theory.
And I want to be clear: although I include my own theory about the core emotion of the heart
types, I am not arguing for the truth of my point of view; my intention is to frame the theoretical
problem and start a discussion.
