Introduction
Career is defined as a chosen pursuit, a profession or occupation. The general course or
progression of one's working life or one's professional achievements. Person choses his career
according to his abilities, interests and potential. In today’s world there are lots of career
opportunities, so an individual needs to identify his interest, skills and other characteristics.

Career planning is the process through which a person becomes aware of his or her personal
skills, interests, knowledge and motivation. It is a sub process of career management that enables
employees to better understand and develop their career skillsand interests, and to use these skills
and interests effectively both within an organization and outside it.

In today’s scenario career planning is becoming momentous because scenario today is totally
different from what it was before due to mergers, outsourcing have changed the ground rules.
Many people have to re-invent or rediscover themselves in order to survive in this competitive
world. Now with increasing number of women are working so various challenges are staring at
them, such as handling dual pressure of family and job.

So all these factors underline the importance of career planning and development.

In the fig on the next page are the certain steps in career planning:-

Career stages

Identifiable periods in one’s work life, which are distinguished by one’s changing activities,
concerns, motives and needs.
There are five stages in one’s career namely:-
Growth Stage ( Birth to 14 years)
Exploration Stage (15-24 years)
Establishment Stage (24- 44 years)
Maintenance Stage (45-65 years)
Decline Stage (Retirement period)

My career is in Exploration stage as I belong to age group of 15 to 24 years and I am exploring


various options, I have identified my core competencies and I want to become a manager.

Occupational Orientation
My skills and personality exhibit mix of Realistic and enterprising orientations as I did my
Engineering in Computer Science. After enriching my knowledge of computers I enrolled myself
in MBA course to become an efficient manager and to do a managerial job for some years and
then setting up my own enterprise. My ultimate aim is to become an entrepreneur.
Career Direction
According to the quiz given in the book I identified my important core activities:-

 Creative Production
 Enterprise Control
 Theory Development and Conceptual Thinking
 Application Of Technology

So by combining the first two functions outcome was my career interest was similar to Solo
entrepreneurs, senior executives in fashion, entertainment and media industries. I found it correct
as I wanted to become an entrepreneur after gaining some experience in market.

Skills
In school I really enjoyed the task of class monitor i.e. exercising control over students and I also
actively participated in annual function in cultural activities like group dance. In that I always
loved the idea of innovation i.e. how to make our performance different from other groups by
selecting a new theme etc. In college I continued my participation in cultural fests and quiz
competitions. I am kind of person who always try to bring new ideas into my work as when I did
my internship projects in software engineering I emphasized on building an innovative interface
which made my project different from conventional projects. Creativity is always an ingredient
in my every task that I have performed till date. I was a member of entrepreneurship club of my
college and made various ad competitions such as ad mad show.

As my long term goal is to become an entrepreneur so I rated these keeping in mind my goal.
What I want to do
If I could have any kind of job I would have become a football player as football is my passion. I
love to play and watch football, I am planning to go to Brazil to watch FIFA World Cup 2014.
My favorite club is Manchester United.

Available Occupations
By visiting the website http://www.bls.gov/oco I found various management occupations such
as advertising managers, marketing managers as I want to do MBA in marketing so looked for
jobs in this field.

Job Objective

To become a successful executive, who should know the art of solving problems constructively

Use of various job search techniques
I will first visit career counselor afterwards I will look for suitable job by visiting company web
sites and register myself on them. I will register with employment agencies or consultancies. I
will also use online job portals and register myself on Naukri, Timesjob and Monster. All the
leading newspapers and magazines contain the advertisements of jobs I will look into that.
Personal contacts are also effective in getting you a job I will contact my friend or relative who is
working in a particular organization. By using all these above avenues efficiently I will definitely
get a job of my choice
