Hazardous Explosive atmosphere
Area
The hazardous area is a dangerous combination of
Flammable Substances, Oxygen and Sources of Ignition
that can generate an explosion.
The combustible material can be Gas, Vapor or Dust.
Given that Oxygen is always present, the only way to

avoid ignitions is to control the Ignition Source caused by
the electrical apparatus.
Any device introduced in the hazardous area must be

compatible and certified for the level of dangerousness.

How to power and read signals from the field devices installed in the
hazardous area?
There are different methods based on different principles such as:
 Segregation (Encapsulation, Oil Immersion, Pressurization)

 Containment (Flameproof)
 Prevention (Increased Safety and INTRINSIC SAFETY)
Ex-p, Ex-o, Ex-m, Ex-e, etc. Ex-d Ex-i
Hazardous Intrinsic safety
Area
Since Intrinsic safety is the most flexible and cost-effective
solution it has been standardized in many applications.
Based on ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU a specific device must
be connected between the power source and the field
devices to make the system safe.
This unit is called “Intrinsically Safe Barrier” or just “Barrier”.
