BSBPMG512: MANAGE PROJECT TIME

Summative assessment 1

Q5.

Decomposition is a time management technique commonly used in project management.

Write an explanation of this technique including its capabilities, limitations, applications, and
outcomes. (250 words)

The technique of decomposition involves subdividing the project work packages into smaller,
more manageable components called schedule activities. Decomposition determines the
project components, identifies milestones and creates packages that can be individually
targeted. It is important to realise how much time spent in decomposition is correct for the
project, as it is possible to do excessive decomposition which may lead to more work without
much value in the time spent and decreased work efficiency. If over-decomposed, estimating
those work packages will not be possible and the effort put on for decomposition will be a
waste. Since this is known to be a teamwork activity, everyone on the project team is
requested to participate in bringing up the most efficient WBS of the project.

Decomposition of project scope generally involves the following activities:

 Gather information on major project deliverables and analyse related tasks;

 Start development of work breakdown structure at the highest level;
 Decompose the upper WBS levels into lower level detailed components;
 Identify each work package & WBS components with a unique code;
 Verify if the degree of decomposition of the work is necessary and sufficient.

Activities are vital input in performing a work. The correct level of decomposition in time
management can produce an accurate estimate of the schedule and timely completion of the
project. It is important to always get in mind that the next level of decomposition is possible
only when we have a clear understanding of deliverables at a particular level.
