Name.- Doménica Valeria Riofrío Sánchez.

 Where do you usually buy fruit and vegetables? Why do you go there?

My parents buy fruits and vegetables at the stalls outside the Dismero or a few blocks from my house
because if they are near that place they will buy them.

 How many kinds of markets do you know?

In Babahoyo there are two markets:

1. In the market that is in front of the Malecón (next to a pizzeria) they sell medicinal plants.

2. In the market near Esparza School they sell fruits and vegetables.

And the flea markets.

 Is there a market near you? What can you buy there? How often is it held?

There are no markets near my house, but there is a corner stall that sells fruits and vegetables. Usually
about three times a week it is bought there, when my mother needs something.

 Do you prefer to buy at the market or the supermarket? Explain why.

I prefer to the supermarket because allows us to go at any time of the day and allows us to make the
purchase more quickly; we can find a great variety of fresh products in the same space.

The handling of the products is more feasible than complying with sanitary regulations. They usually
put several offers especially on specific days of the week. It can be purchased in cash or by credit card.

Do you agree? Why (not)?

What are the advantages and disadvantages of local markets? Make a pro and con list.

Advantages

 In the farmers´ market find beautiful, fresh, and uneaten vegetables (as well as breads,
meats, eggs, plants and crafts) to suit my needs. Produce is fresh, sometimes picked only a
few hours before I buy it.

 The produce has fewe pesticides.

 The farmers´ market competes well in price and, quality.

Disadvantages

 The small size of some farmers´ markets does not allow for variety of produce.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of supermarkets? Make a pro and con list.

Advantages

 The supermarket offers convenience and variety.

 The supermarket is my third choice for products

Disadvantages

 Supermarketproduce is not as fresh as farmers´ market fare.

 Supermarket produce typically loses nutritional value as it is transported from far away.

 Produce in supermarket tends to come from large producers who use heavy pesticides and
petroleum-based fertilizers to provide ❝prefect❞ spicimens for the consumer.
 Produce in supermarkets tends to be varieties that ship well, but don't necessarily taste
good.

What was the last time you went to the market? What did you buy?

I don't remember very well how long ago I went to the market, I think it was a few years ago and it
was to buy a medicinal plant for my brother. Usually my parents are the ones who go shopping.

Are markets important? Why or why not? Could we live without markets?

The markets are important because there I find beautiful, fresh and uneaten vegetables (as well as
breads, meats, eggs, plants and crafts) to satisfy my needs. You could not live without markets, they
are essential.

What could you possible buy at a flea market? Do research and gives examples.

A flea market is a street market that is generally set up outdoors on one or more specific days of the
week. The stalls usually consist of stalls that are made up of removable metal structures on which a
board is placed as a counter. However, the fabric can also be placed on folding tables or directly on the
floor on blankets, baskets or other containers. The products that are put on sale are very varied: food
products, clothing, household products, plants, beads, etc.

Are there any seasonal or festival markets where you live? What can you do or buy there?

If there is, I can buy clothes and sweets.

Compare prices of some goods sold at the market, supermarket and convenience store (e.g. kilo
of tomatoes, bread, meat, shower cream). Do research if necessary. Where is the best place to
shop?

I think the best place to buy is the supermarket. There are products that in the markets or in the stores
increase the price even if it is minimal.
